Along the Mohawk River, the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail can be accessed near Arrowhead Marina and RV Park and ridden into Schenectady. Downtown Albany, the New York State Museum, and the state capitol are all within a short drive of Latham. Families staying at Alps Family Campground Inc can use on-site recreation including a pool, playground, and ball fields, while Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Deer Run offers resort-style activities across a large property.

The Capital Region has a humid continental climate. Summers are warm, winters are cold and bring significant snowfall, and precipitation is spread relatively evenly throughout the year, with winter moisture often arriving as snow. Most private campgrounds in the area run a warm-weather season, roughly May through mid-October, and are not open in winter. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lakeside and riverfront sites book out quickly. Booking early is advisable, especially for weekend stays in July and August. Arrowhead Marina and RV Park operates on a seasonal calendar from mid-spring into mid-October, and Adventure Bound Deer Run and Alps Family Campground Inc operate on similar warm-weather schedules. Early fall brings cooler nights and foliage across the Helderbergs and the Rensselaer County hills, and campsites are often easier to secure in September. Late-season travelers should check individual campground closing dates, since many private parks shut water and dump stations before the first hard freeze.

Site types vary widely across the area. Arrowhead Marina and RV Park features 64 mostly shaded sites with 9 pull-through options and 50-foot parking pads, each equipped with either a 30 or 50 amp electrical outlet, plus a dump station, restrooms, laundromat, dog park, docks, and a boat launch. Thompsons Lake - Thacher State Park does not have electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, so RVers relying on hookups should plan for generator use within posted hours or choose a private park; flush restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station are available. At Thompsons Lake, campers arriving after 9PM are asked to call the park, quiet hours run from 10PM to 7AM, visitors must leave by 10PM, and generator hours are 9AM to 11AM and 5PM to 9PM. Pets are welcome with a leash and current proof of rabies inoculation at check-in. Cell coverage is strong near Latham and Albany but thins out west toward the Helderbergs.
