Campgrounds near Mahopac
Mahopac sits in Putnam County in the New York Hudson Valley, roughly an hour north of New York City and within reach of several state park campgrounds. Clarence Fahnestock State Park covers land in Putnam and Dutchess counties in the Hudson Highlands, with Canopus Lake at its center. Its Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park campground is the closest state-run option, though campers should confirm current status before booking.
South of Mahopac, Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park sits inside New York's second-largest state park. Harriman has more than 200 miles of trails ranging from easy to strenuous, 31 lakes, two beaches, and activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. The Beaver Pond Campground is located just 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge.
For full-hookup RV camping with resort-style amenities, New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday lies across the Hudson in Wallkill. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc offers private-park lake camping in Hopewell Junction, and Macedonia Brook State Park in Kent, Connecticut, delivers a more rustic, backcountry feel within a manageable drive.
Things to do around Mahopac
Hiking is the anchor activity. Clarence Fahnestock has over 50 miles of trails ranging from easy walks to more strenuous hikes, with forests, lakes, and mountains for visitors of all fitness levels. A portion of the Appalachian Trail runs through Fahnestock and Hudson Highlands State Parks. Macedonia Brook State Park adds another option: the Blue Trail crosses Cobble Mountain and several other peaks, offering outstanding views of the Catskill and Taconic mountains.
On the water, families can swim, paddle, and fish. Fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in Fahnestock's four ponds is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and brook or rainbow trout, with rowboats and kayaks available for rental. At the Newburgh KOA, kids get two swimming pools, mini golf, a jumping pillow, a climbing wall, and a fishing pond.
Off-site day trips include West Point, Hudson Valley wineries, and the villages of Cold Spring and Kent.

Camping in the region is largely a warm-weather affair. Most state park campgrounds operate from spring through mid-fall. Macedonia Brook State Park offers 51 sites in a rustic and quiet setting, with the 2026 season opening Friday, May 22 and closing Monday, October 12. After Labor Day, the Macedonia Brook campground is only open for weekend stays on Friday and Saturday nights. The Newburgh KOA runs a longer season with pool access from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Summer weekends fill fast because of proximity to New York City. Harriman is an easy getaway from New York City and a favored weekend destination, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible, up to nine months ahead. Fall brings foliage color and cooler nights, and demand tapers after Labor Day.
Important note for planners: the Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse. Winter camping is limited, though the wider parks stay open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice activities.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Mahopac, NY
How much does an RV rental in Mahopac, NY typically cost?
Renting an RV in Mahopac, NY is more affordable than most people expect, especially compared to traditional rental companies near New York City. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Mahopac area typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and luxury Class A rigs sit higher. You'll save the most by booking midweek, traveling in May or September when Hudson Valley campgrounds are quieter, and choosing a trailer if you already have a tow-capable vehicle. Pro tip: filter by 'Instant Book' and sort by price to spot the best cheap RV rental Mahopac options, then message the host about weekly discounts, which many Putnam County owners offer for 5+ night stays.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mahopac%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Mahopac, NY?
Good news: a regular New York State driver's license, or any valid US or Canadian license, is all you need to rent an RV in Mahopac. New York does not require a special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for non-commercial motorhomes or trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. RVezy's approved driver guidelines generally require renters to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country alongside your home license. Once you're verified, you're cleared to drive anything from a nimble campervan rental Mahopac travelers love to a full Class A.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Mahopac?
Every RV rental in Mahopac, NY booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you're covered from the moment you drive off. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (Standard, Premium, or Peace of Mind) during checkout, not the host. It gives renters real financial protection and dramatically reduces out-of-pocket risk if something happens on the road. Pair that with round-the-clock roadside help if you get a flat on a Hudson Valley backroad, and your Mahopac RV trip starts feeling a lot less stressful before you even pack the cooler.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Mahopac RV booking?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation, including a full money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your Mahopac rig with confidence. Cancellation terms are set by RVezy (not the individual host), and your refund depends on how many days before the trip you cancel. If a host needs to cancel on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps with travel credits so you can rebook. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Hudson Valley rigs for fall foliage weekends, knowing the grace period has you covered if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Mahopac RV trip?
Absolutely, pets are welcome on plenty of rigs. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Mahopac hosts offer, just toggle the 'Pet-Friendly' filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of options in the Putnam County and Westchester area. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee (usually $25 to $75), which is disclosed up front on the listing. Once you arrive, your pup will love nearby spots like Clarence Fahnestock State Park, which has dog-friendly trails just 10 minutes north, and the leash-friendly shoreline at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park on Lake Mahopac. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, summer humidity in the Hudson Valley climbs fast, and your dog will thank you on the trails.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestockCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Mahopac?
Yes, RV delivery Mahopac renters love is one of the most popular options on RVezy. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campsite, vacation rental, or driveway in Putnam, Westchester, or Dutchess County, set it up, level it, connect hookups, and walk you through everything before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage and are listed on each host's profile, so there are no surprises. To find it fast, use the 'Delivery' filter when you search. This is hands-down the easiest way to enjoy your first motorhome rental Mahopac trip, especially if you're heading to Fahnestock State Park and don't want to tow on the Taconic.

dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Mahopac, NY?
You're spoiled for choice. For RV camping Mahopac travelers consistently recommend Fahnestock for its quiet, wooded sites. Reserve early through New York State Parks or KOA, since summer weekends fill 6 to 9 months out.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Mahopac?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for a Mahopac RV trip, with peak magic happening from late September to mid-October when Hudson Valley fall foliage explodes into reds and golds. Summer (June to August) averages 75 to 85°F with warm, humid days perfect for swimming in Lake Mahopac, while spring brings 50 to 70°F days and blooming trails. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s with snow, so most hosts pause bookings from December through March, though a few offer winterized rigs for snowy getaways. Pro tip: book your October foliage weekend by July, leaf-peeper demand makes it the busiest stretch of the year along the Taconic State Parkway.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I know how to use it?
Yes, and you're in great company. Most people doing their first time renting an RV in Mahopac feel confident within the first hour because every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup: how to operate the propane, level the rig, dump tanks, run the generator, and use the awning. You can also message your host anytime during the trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included if anything mechanical comes up. Pro tip: ask your host for a short video walkthrough you can rewatch later, and choose a smaller Class C or travel trailer for your first ride, they're easier to maneuver on the winding Putnam County back roads around Lake Mahopac.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rving-safetyWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You won't be stuck on the side of the road. Every RV rental in Mahopac, NY booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If a system inside the rig acts up, your host is your first call, they know their RV best and can usually troubleshoot quickly by phone or text. For anything bigger, RVezy's support team is reachable around the clock to help coordinate a solution. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number plus the RVezy support line in your phone before you pull out of the driveway, so help is one tap away.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Mahopac RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is generally welcome, which makes Mahopac an ideal launchpad. From Putnam County you can easily reach Vermont's Green Mountains (about 3 hours), New Hampshire's White Mountains (5 hours), Maine's coast (6 hours), Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains (2 hours), and the New Jersey Shore (2.5 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada (such as Montreal, about 5.5 hours north) depend on the host and your protection coverage, so confirm directly with your host before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: a Vermont-to-Maine fall foliage loop from Mahopac is one of the most beautiful weeklong RV road trips in the Northeast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how should I budget?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow up your budget. Class C motorhomes around Mahopac typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs around 6 to 9 MPG, campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually a 20 to 35% drop from its normal MPG). New York gas prices in the Mahopac area generally run a bit above the national average, often $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon for regular. For a 4-night loop covering 400 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up off the Taconic at stations in Brewster or Carmel, where prices tend to be lower than highway-adjacent stops along I-684.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Mahopac?
The earlier the better, especially for summer and fall weekends. New York State Parks like Clarence Fahnestock open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime weekends (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, and peak foliage in early October) often book within hours of release. Private parks like Sylvan Lake Beach Park and Newburgh KOA tend to fill 3 to 6 months ahead. Midweek stays and shoulder season (mid-May, late September) are far easier to grab last minute. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 9 months before your target Saturday at Fahnestock and log in at 9 a.m. sharp, that's how locals snag lakeside sites for their family RV trip Mahopac weekends.
newyork.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Mahopac?
Mahopac driving is manageable for new RVers if you plan smart. The town sits along NY-6 and US-6 with the scenic Taconic State Parkway just minutes away, but heads up: commercial vehicles, including most motorhomes over a certain weight, are prohibited on the Taconic, so route via I-684 and I-84 for your RV instead. Local roads around Lake Mahopac twist and roll through wooded hills, with low bridges flagged on signs (always trust posted clearances). Summer brings sudden thunderstorms; winter adds snow and ice from December to March. Pro tip: download the RV-specific routing app before pickup so you're auto-routed away from the Taconic and other parkways where RVs aren't allowed, this is the #1 mistake out-of-town renters make in the Hudson Valley.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/parkway-info.htmlWhat amenities do campgrounds near Mahopac offer for RVs?
Most campgrounds near Mahopac are well-equipped for RVs. State parks like Clarence Fahnestock offer electric hookups (20/30/50 amp at many sites), potable water spigots, and a centrally located dump station, plus hot showers and flush toilets. Private parks such as Sylvan Lake Beach Park and Newburgh KOA add full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, laundry, and propane refill. For dumping and water fills on the road, Newburgh KOA and Croton Point Park both offer day-use dump access for a small fee. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-amp-to-15-amp adapter, the older sites at Fahnestock sometimes sit a bit far from the spigot and pedestal.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/camping-lodging.aspxWhat's typically included inside a Mahopac RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most RVs you'll rent in Mahopac come fully equipped: a queen or king bed plus convertible dinettes and bunks (sleeping 2 to 8), a kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a built-in generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi is hit or miss depending on the host, some include a hotspot for an add-on fee. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list closely and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-friendly outlet, baby gate clearance, or a real coffee maker, Mahopac hosts are famously responsive and accommodating.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Mahopac?
Mahopac hosts make trip planning easy with flexible add-ons. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes ($25 to $50), outdoor chairs and tables ($15 to $30), bikes, kayaks, generators, and propane refills. Many hosts offer pre-stocked cleaning to save you the dump-and-scrub at the end. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Mahopac, Carmel, Brewster, or Yorktown Heights, and most allow a 1-hour orientation window. Drop-off mirrors the pickup time. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each listing (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night). Pro tip: bundle add-ons in your initial booking request, hosts often discount the package when you bring everything in one ask.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0188-buying-recreational-vehicleHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, so your booking is protected end-to-end. A security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment a few days before pickup and released after drop-off, assuming the rig comes back in the same shape it left. To avoid hiccups, take time-stamped photos and a quick video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your host requires it (or pay the dumping add-on). Pro tip: confirm tank and fuel expectations in writing through RVezy's chat 24 hours before pickup, that one message prevents almost every deposit dispute.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV around Mahopac?
You have solid options for where to park an RV in Mahopac. Overnight parking on residential streets in the Town of Carmel (which includes Mahopac) is restricted, so plan to stay at a campground or private property rather than curbside. Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Sylvan Lake Beach Park, and Newburgh KOA all accept reservations for overnight RV stays. Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along I-84 (Fishkill, Newburgh) historically allow free overnight RV parking with manager permission, always call ahead to confirm. Harriman State Park's Beaver Pond Campground is another great regional option 35 miles south. Pro tip: if you're picking the RV up late and need one night nearby before heading out, book Fahnestock's overflow or KOA Newburgh, both are quick I-84 hops from Mahopac.
