Campgrounds near Margaretville
Margaretville sits in New York's Delaware County in the western Catskills, along Route 28 and the East Branch of the Delaware River. The village borders Catskill Park, a large patchwork of state Forest Preserve and private land that governs where and how RVers can camp within a short drive of town.
Camping options in the area fall into three categories. Private RV parks such as Stratton Falls Campground, Covered Bridge Campsite, and Nickerson Park Campground offer hookups, dump stations, and family amenities. State-run New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) campgrounds in the surrounding Catskill Forest Preserve provide developed sites with restrooms and vault or flush toilets but no utility hookups.
More rustic DEC areas, including Allaben - DEC in Shandaken Wild Forest and Peekamoose Valley - DEC in Sundown Wild Forest, are primitive: expect fire rings and picnic tables rather than water or electric service. Choose based on rig size, hookup needs, and how remote a setting is desired.
Things to do around Margaretville
Fly fishing dominates the local calendar. The East Branch Delaware and nearby Beaverkill are historic American fly-fishing waters, with New York's inland trout season running from April 1 through October 15 for brown and brook trout in local tributaries.
Hiking is the second draw. Trails climb into the Catskill High Peaks, Shandaken Wild Forest, and Sundown Wild Forest, and the Delaware Wild Forest offers foot trails accessible from trailheads west of the village. Belleayre Mountain, a short drive east, runs a chairlift, mountain biking, and winter skiing.
Families also use Margaretville as a base for a drive to the Peekamoose Blue Hole day-use area in Sundown Wild Forest, paddling calmer stretches of the East Branch, and visiting village shops, farmers markets, and the Catskill Scenic Trail rail-to-trail path.

Most developed campgrounds around Margaretville operate on a late-spring to mid-fall schedule. DEC campgrounds in the Catskill Forest Preserve typically open in mid-May and close the weekend after Columbus Day. After that point, developed car-camping options nearby are limited, and access to primitive DEC parcels such as Allaben - DEC off Route 28 depends on weather and road conditions.
Summer, from late June through August, is peak season. Weekends fill quickly at private parks and DEC campgrounds alike. The Peekamoose Blue Hole day-use area requires a paid advance permit seven days a week from May 15 through September 15, with a cap of 50 permits per day and no walk-ins.
Fall brings foliage traffic through October, with cool nights and shorter shoulder-season staffing. Winter closes the developed campgrounds entirely. Snow, ice on secondary roads, and unplowed forest roads make RV travel to primitive Catskill parcels difficult from December into March.
How to book
Reservations for DEC campgrounds, including Peekamoose Valley - DEC in the Lower, Middle, and Upper fields, are handled through ReserveAmerica, online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Sites can be booked up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are accepted until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival at DEC campgrounds. Walk-ins without a reservation are not permitted.
Day-use permits for Peekamoose Blue Hole are separate from camping permits. They must be obtained at least 24 hours and no more than seven days in advance through ReserveAmerica, are tied to one vehicle and up to five people, and are capped at 50 per day.
Private campgrounds such as Stratton Falls Campground, Covered Bridge Campsite, and Nickerson Park Campground take direct bookings through operator websites, and peak-summer holiday weekends often sell out weeks ahead.
What to expect
Roads into the Catskills are winding and hilly. Route 28 and Route 30 are the main corridors to Margaretville. Smaller county roads leading to DEC sites can be narrow, and Peekamoose Road prohibits trailers and vehicles over 20 feet at the Blue Hole parking area. Drivers of larger rigs should map hookup-park approaches carefully.
Cell service is unreliable outside the villages and effectively absent in the Peekamoose Valley. Download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town. Black bear activity is common across the Catskill Forest Preserve, so food, coolers, and scented items should be stored inside a hard-sided RV or bear-resistant container.
Firewood cannot be moved into New York from more than 50 miles away; buy locally or bring certified heat-treated wood. Bring proof of a current rabies vaccination for dogs at DEC sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Margaretville, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Margaretville, NY?
RV rental in Margaretville is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Catskills, with nightly rates typically ranging from about $95 for a cozy travel trailer to $300+ for a fully loaded Class A motorhome. Travel trailers and pop-ups tend to be the cheap RV rental Margaretville option, while campervans and Class C motorhomes sit in the middle. You'll save the most by booking midweek, traveling in shoulder season (May or late September), and choosing a host who offers unlimited mileage. Pro tip: foliage weekends in October book up fast and command premium pricing, so lock in your dates by late summer for the best value.
iloveny.com/places-to-go/catskills/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Margaretville?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Margaretville, NY. New York State does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers typically rented on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies approved drivers during booking, so there's nothing extra to chase down. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly in. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection comes with my Margaretville RV rental?
Every RV rental in Margaretville booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the Catskills with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on a winding mountain road or in a tight campground. Pro tip: if you're new to RVing or driving the steeper grades near Belleayre, the higher-tier protection is a smart, low-stress upgrade.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Margaretville RV trip?
Booking your Margaretville RV trip is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you have breathing room if plans shift. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and RVezy also has accommodations for situations like natural disasters, which matter in the Catskills where the occasional summer tropical storm or winter nor'easter can change plans. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for fall foliage and reach out to RVezy support if you need to adjust.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Margaretville RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Margaretville options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) right in their listing rules. The Catskills are a dream for dog owners: leashed pups are welcome on most trails in the Catskill Forest Preserve, at the Pepacton Reservoir overlook areas, and at dog-friendly campgrounds like Little Pond and Bear Spring Mountain. Many local breweries and cafes in Margaretville and nearby Andes have outdoor patios that welcome four-legged guests. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and bring a tick preventative, since the Catskills are tick country.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Margaretville?
Yes, RV delivery Margaretville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig on Route 28's curves. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at your campground, a private property, or even a wedding venue in the Western Catskills. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it, then check their listing for delivery radius and per-mile fees. Popular drop-off spots include Little Pond Campground, Bear Spring Mountain, and private Hipcamp sites around Andes and Roxbury. Pro tip: delivery often includes a full walkthrough, so you start your trip relaxed and confident.
dec.ny.gov/places/catskill-parkHow far can I travel from Margaretville on a typical RV rental?
You've got serious range from Margaretville, and many RVezy hosts offer generous or even unlimited mileage packages. Within a 2 to 4 hour drive you can reach Niagara Falls (about 270 miles northwest), the Adirondacks (around 150 miles north), the Finger Lakes (about 130 miles west), the Jersey Shore (around 160 miles south), and Acadia-bound routes through Vermont and New Hampshire. Closer in, the Pepacton Reservoir, Belleayre Mountain, and Woodstock are all under an hour away. Pro tip: ask hosts about their daily mileage allowance up front, and if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Margaretville, look for listings advertising unlimited miles to keep your fuel and trip budget predictable.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhere are the best campgrounds near Margaretville for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Margaretville. Some of the best campgrounds near Margaretville include Little Pond Campground (a NYS DEC site about 20 minutes south with electric sites and a swimming pond), Bear Spring Mountain Campground near Walton (great for horseback riders and quiet sites), Terry Clove Kampground in Pine Hill (full hookups close to Belleayre), and Stratton Falls Campsites in Roxbury along the East Branch of the Delaware River. For a more resort-style stay, Camp Catskills RV Park is roughly an hour east. Pro tip: DEC campgrounds are first-come or reservable through ReserveAmerica, and they fill up fast for summer weekends, so book 4 to 6 weeks ahead.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/campgroundsWhen is the best time to visit Margaretville in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Margaretville RV trip is late May through mid-October, when daytime highs sit between a comfortable 63°F in May and a pleasant 77°F in July, with cool mountain nights perfect for campfires. Late September and early October bring world-famous Catskills foliage, with sugar maples turning crimson along Route 30 and the Pepacton Reservoir. Winter RVing is possible too if you book a four-season rig, since Belleayre and Plattekill ski areas are minutes away. Pro tip: avoid the first week of June if you can, it's historically the wettest month with about 4.5 inches of rain, while July and August offer the most sunshine and warmest swimming in local creeks.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Is Margaretville a good place to start?
Margaretville is actually a friendly place for your first time renting an RV. The village itself sits in a wide valley along the East Branch of the Delaware River, and many local roads, like Route 28 toward Phoenicia or Route 30 toward Downsville, are gentle, scenic two-lanes rather than white-knuckle mountain passes. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering hookups, slide-outs, tanks, and driving tips, and you can message them anytime during your trip. Pro tip: if you're nervous, choose a smaller Class B campervan or a 22 to 25 foot Class C, and ask for delivery so your first miles are stress-free. You'll be pouring coffee at your campsite before lunch.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-licenseWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Margaretville includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Route 28, a dead battery at Little Pond Campground, or run out of fuel heading toward Roxbury, help is one call away. Your host is also your local expert and is reachable through the RVezy app for questions about the fridge, generator, or slide-out. For anything bigger, RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and roadside number at pickup, and save the RVezy support number to your phone before heading into the mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Margaretville RV rental to Canada or other states?
Cross-border and out-of-state trips are often welcome, you just want to confirm with your specific host before booking. From Margaretville, popular RV road trip routes head south to the Jersey Shore, east to Cape Cod, north to Lake Placid and Montreal, and west to Niagara Falls and the Finger Lakes. Many hosts happily allow travel throughout the US and into Canada with advance notice, since the protection package can extend across the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: message the host with your route and dates before booking, and bring a passport or enhanced driver's license if you're aiming for Canada.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hemisphere-travel-initiativeWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your Margaretville RV trip stays on budget. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and big Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas in Delaware County tends to run a few cents above the New York state average, and the nearest cluster of stations is right in Margaretville on Bridge Street and along Route 28. For a typical 4-day Catskills loop of about 300 miles, budget roughly $90 to $200 in fuel depending on RV size. Pro tip: top off in Margaretville or Andes before heading deeper into the mountains, where stations get sparse after dark.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Margaretville?
For the best campgrounds near Margaretville, aim to book 4 to 12 weeks ahead, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage. New York State DEC campgrounds like Little Pond, Bear Spring Mountain, and nearby Kenneth L. Wilson use ReserveAmerica.com, where reservations open up to 9 months in advance and the prime sites disappear quickly. Private parks like Stratton Falls and Terry Clove book directly through their websites or by phone. Pro tip: if you're flexible, Sunday through Thursday nights almost always have availability even in peak season, and you'll often score a quieter site near the creek. For Labor Day or Columbus Day weekend, treat 3+ months out as the new normal.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Margaretville?
Driving an RV around Margaretville is genuinely enjoyable once you know the lay of the land. Route 28 is the main artery, a well-maintained two-lane state highway with broad shoulders that connects Kingston to Oneonta through the heart of the Catskills. Expect some moderate climbs and curves, especially over Pakatakan Mountain and through the Pine Hill area, but no extreme grades. Winter brings real snow and occasional ice from December through March, so a four-season rig and tire chains are smart if you're heading to Belleayre or Plattekill. Pro tip: avoid narrow back roads like Dry Brook or Mill Brook in larger rigs, and use Route 30 along the Pepacton Reservoir for one of the most beautiful, RV-friendly drives in New York.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds around Margaretville?
Catskills campgrounds range from rustic to resort, so you can match the experience to your style. NYS DEC sites like Little Pond and Bear Spring Mountain typically offer electric hookups, potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, hot showers, and a central dump station, but no sewer at individual sites. Private parks like Terry Clove Kampground and Stratton Falls offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. For dumping and freshwater fills between trips, the dump station at Little Pond Campground is reliable and open seasonally. Pro tip: bring a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter and at least 25 feet of fresh-water hose, since older DEC sites often have hookups farther from the pad than you'd expect.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/campgrounds/little-pond-campgroundWhat's typically included inside RVs available for rent in Margaretville?
Most Margaretville RV rentals come ready to camp, so you can focus on the Catskills, not the gear list. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, pots and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on size, a furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many motorhome rentals in Margaretville also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid nights. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the deeper Catskill valleys, so don't count on streaming at Little Pond. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities tab carefully for linens, towels, and cookware, and message the host to confirm if you want a specific item like a coffee maker or starter propane tank.
dec.ny.gov/places/catskill-forest-preserveWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts offering campervan rental Margaretville and full motorhome rental Margaretville often provide useful add-ons that make life easier: bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and even kayaks or paddleboards perfect for the Pepacton Reservoir. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Margaretville, Andes, or Arkville, and many offer delivery within a 30 to 60 mile radius for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, with many hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per night plus a small per-mile charge after. Pro tip: bundle bedding, a generator, and delivery into one booking for the smoothest hand-off, especially if it's your first RV trip.
dec.ny.gov/places/pepacton-reservoirHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure, all handled through the platform with no cash changing hands at pickup. You'll pay your trip total (rental rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons) via credit card or a supported payment method when you book. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card separate from the booking payment, the amount is shown on the listing, and it's released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, typically within a few days of return. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off in Margaretville, send it to your host through the RVezy message thread, and your deposit return becomes a non-issue.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Margaretville during winter for skiing?
Yes, winter RV camping in Margaretville is a real (and underrated) adventure. Belleayre Mountain is about 15 minutes east, Plattekill Mountain is roughly 20 minutes north, and Hunter and Windham are within about an hour, making a heated RV a fun base camp for ski weekends. Look for four-season RVs on RVezy with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore power capability, and confirm with your host that the rig is set up for active winter use. Many Catskills campgrounds close by late October, so plan to stay at a private park with year-round full hookups or a host who allows driveway parking near the slopes. Pro tip: bring a heated water hose and skirting tape, and ski midweek to dodge NYC crowds.
