Campgrounds near Merritt Park
Merritt Park sits in the hamlet of Lake Carmel in Putnam County, New York, on the eastern edge of the Hudson Highlands roughly an hour north of New York City. The area draws RV travelers because several campgrounds cluster within a short drive, ranging from state-park campgrounds along lakes and ridges to private family resorts.
The closest option is Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park, a scenic campground formed along the park's natural rock ridges with 80 campsites, each having a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring, plus an area for RV camping and centrally located restrooms and showers with no hookups or dump station. Note that the Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse.
Other nearby choices include Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc in Hopewell Junction, the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday across the Hudson, Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park along the river in Staatsburg, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River in Gardiner. Together they cover tent, RV, and cabin styles for most trip plans.
Things to do near Merritt Park
Outdoor recreation drives most trips. Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park offers boating, hunting, fishing, and birding, with Canopus Lake providing a sandy shore and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the park's four ponds for bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout. The park has over 50 miles of trails ranging from easy walks to more strenuous hikes, with scenic views across forests, lakes, and mountains.
Along the Hudson, trails through Mills and Norrie State Parks are used for walking, jogging, hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, with river views along the parks' western boundaries. Families with kids often base at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River in Gardiner, which offers water play features and family programming above the Wallkill River.
Day trips to Hyde Park historic sites, Rhinebeck, and West Point round out most itineraries.

The Hudson Valley has four distinct seasons, and RV camping is largely a warm-weather activity. Summers are warm with temperatures in the low 80s and moderate humidity, while spring and fall are milder with moderate precipitation. Most private campgrounds and state-park campgrounds run from spring through late fall.
Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park typically opens in late April and closes in mid to late October, and Fahnestock's usual season runs from mid-May to mid-October when it is not closed for construction. Summer weekends fill fastest, so booking early is important for peak summer weekends and holidays. Weekday stays after Labor Day are quieter and pair well with peak fall foliage in October.
Winters are cold and snowy in the Hudson Highlands, with regular snowfall from November into April. Winter RV camping here is limited, though day use for cross-country skiing continues at Fahnestock Winter Park and at Mills-Norrie.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!
