Campgrounds and RV parks near Milton, NY

The Hudson River drives most of the recreation. At Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, the Norrie Marina offers boat launch and fishing access, and trails run along bluffs with river views. Kayak programs and the NYS DEC Norrie Point Environmental Education Center sit within the same park complex. Inland, Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park covers roughly 14,000 acres in Putnam and Dutchess counties, with over 50 miles of trails, Canopus Lake's sandy beach, and rowboat and kayak rentals. A portion of the Appalachian Trail crosses the park. Family-focused stops include the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, Vanderbilt Mansion and the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt in Hyde Park, and local orchards and wineries in the Marlboro and New Paltz areas.

The main camping season in the mid-Hudson Valley runs roughly from mid-April through October. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park operates its campground on that spring-to-fall window, while the Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock typically opens in early May and runs into fall. Note that the Fahnestock campground is currently closed to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, though the Group Wilderness Campground and the Pelton Pond Pavilion remain available. Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest. Weekday visits at state parks are noticeably quieter, and same-day reservations for New York State Park campsites are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Fall brings foliage across the Hudson Highlands and Catskills and is one of the most popular times for scenic drives and hiking. Winter access is limited: many private campgrounds close, though day-use trails at Mills-Norrie and Fahnestock stay open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Hookups vary widely. KOA and Jellystone properties around Milton typically offer full-hookup RV sites, laundry, and family amenities. At Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, RVs are welcome but the park does not offer full hookups, with only a limited number of sites carrying electric. The Pelton Pond area at Fahnestock has no hookups or dump station, with a 40-foot RV length limit at many sites. Expect wooded sites at the state parks, with central comfort stations for showers and toilets. Quiet hours at state park campgrounds run 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and pets are limited to two per site, leashed, with proof of rabies vaccination available on request. Firewood restrictions apply: untreated firewood generally cannot be brought from more than 50 miles away.
