Camping near Mohegan Lake, New York
Mohegan Lake sits in northern Westchester County, roughly an hour north of New York City and within easy driving distance of the Hudson Highlands, Putnam County, and the eastern edge of Rockland County. The area combines lakes, protected state parkland, and private family resorts, which gives RV renters a wide range of options within a short drive.
Beaver Pond Campground sits within the 46,000-acre Harriman State Park in Rockland County, directly adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, with immediate access to Harriman's extensive network of hiking trails, including portions of the Appalachian Trail. To the north in Putnam County, the campground at Clarence Fahnestock State Park is set among wooded, rolling terrain near Canopus Lake, with each site offering a picnic table, fire ring, and charcoal grill.
West across the Hudson, the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday offers full-hookup sites and cabins. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc in Hopewell Junction and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River round out the family-focused options within about an hour of Mohegan Lake.
Things to do around Mohegan Lake
The surrounding parks are built for outdoor recreation. Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of trails that range from easy to strenuous, plus 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. Lake Welch, next to Beaver Pond Campground, has a protected swimming beach staffed by lifeguards during the summer season.
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park offers boating, hunting, fishing, and birding, with Canopus Lake as the centerpiece. Fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental.
Families looking for on-site entertainment can lean on the private resorts, where pools, playgrounds, and organized activities keep kids busy without leaving the campground.

State-park camping in the Lower Hudson Valley is seasonal. Beaver Pond typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping and then runs a regular reservation season from early May through mid-October. An important planning note: the main campground at Clarence Fahnestock State Park is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, while the Group Wilderness Campground remains open and can be booked by calling the park office directly.
Summer weekends are the busiest window. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Spring and fall bring cooler nights and thinner crowds, and fall foliage in the Hudson Highlands typically peaks in October.
Winter shifts the region toward day use. Fahnestock Winter Park offers groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Most public campgrounds are closed, so cold-weather RV renters typically rely on the private parks that operate a longer shoulder season.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds near Mohegan Lake
New York State Park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond, use ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3pm, and no walk-ins are allowed on standard sites outside that policy. The Fahnestock Group Wilderness Campground is booked by phone through the park office rather than online.
Private resorts book directly. The Newburgh KOA takes reservations through the KOA website or app, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River books through its own site. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc accepts direct reservations by phone and online.
For summer holidays and October foliage weekends, secure sites as early as the booking window opens.
What to expect on the ground
State park campgrounds in this area are rustic by design. Beaver Pond has 125 campsites for up to two tents and six people per site, with select sites able to accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet in length. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, plus centrally located full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station, but there are no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite.
Expect narrow park roads, tree cover, and limited cell coverage inside Harriman. Renters with larger rigs or those wanting full hookups, Wi-Fi, and pools should plan on the Newburgh KOA or Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River instead.

You've got three excellent windows. Late spring (mid-May through June) brings comfortable 65 to 80 degree days, blooming Hudson Valley scenery, and quieter campgrounds. Summer (July and August) is peak season with warm 80 to 88 degree days perfect for swimming at Lake Welch, though weekends book up fast. Fall (late September through mid-October) is the local favorite: foliage along Bear Mountain is world-class, days stay in the 55 to 70 degree range, and bugs are gone. Winters drop into the 20s and 30s with snow, so most state park campgrounds close from December to April. Pro tip: target the first two weekends of October for unbeatable leaf color.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Is Mohegan Lake a good place to start?
Yes, this is honestly one of the friendliest areas for a first time renting an RV. Roads around Mohegan Lake are well-maintained, and you can practice in lower-traffic areas like Route 6 before heading out. If even that feels like a lot, book a delivery and the RV arrives ready to use. Plus, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking. Pro tip: start with a 2 to 3 night stay at Fahnestock State Park, just 15 miles north, before committing to a longer route.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-manuals/chapter-11-driving-emergenciesWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Mohegan Lake trip?
Take a breath: you're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes sideways near Bear Mountain or deep in Harriman State Park, call the roadside number in your booking confirmation and help is dispatched. You can also reach RVezy customer support for anything else, from a stubborn water pump to a question about your campsite. Your host is also a great first call for quick troubleshooting since they know their rig inside and out. Pro tip: save all three numbers in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Mohegan Lake RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Mohegan Lake easily crosses state borders. Connecticut is 10 minutes east, New Jersey is under an hour south, Massachusetts is about 90 minutes northeast, and Vermont is roughly 3 hours north, all popular routes from Westchester County. Canada trips (think Montreal or Niagara Falls Ontario) are possible too, but you'll need to confirm with your host and RVezy beforehand because insurance and border paperwork must be sorted in advance. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: message the host on the listing page early if you're eyeing a multi-state loop so they can confirm mileage and cross-border approval up front.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for my Mohegan Lake RV trip?
Easier to budget than you'd think. In the Hudson Valley, expect regular gasoline around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon and diesel around $3.90 to $4.30. A Class C motorhome typically gets 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), a Class B campervan 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer about 10 to 13 MPG. For a 4-day, 300-mile loop through Bear Mountain and the Catskills in a Class C, plan roughly $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: gas is noticeably cheaper just over the border in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, so fill up there if your route swings that way and skip the higher-priced Westchester stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Mohegan Lake?
Plan ahead and you'll lock in the best spots. New York State Parks (Fahnestock, Harriman/Beaver Pond, Lake Taghkanic) use ReserveAmerica and open reservations up to nine months in advance, and summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day genuinely fill within hours of opening. Westchester County parks like Croton Point use their own reservation system and tend to fill 2 to 3 months out. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA usually have more flexibility, especially midweek. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday, book Sunday through Thursday instead, when sites are wide open, prices drop, and you'll have the trails and Hudson River views largely to yourself.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are driving conditions like around Mohegan Lake for a larger RV?
Totally manageable with a little planning. Mohegan Lake sits along Route 6 in Westchester County, but here's a critical local tip: commercial vehicles and many larger RVs are prohibited on the Taconic, Bronx River, Hutchinson River, Sprain Brook, and Saw Mill River Parkways. Stick to Interstate 84, I-684, US-9, and the New York State Thruway (I-87) for any motorhome. Avoid driving into Manhattan entirely; many bridges and tunnels have low clearances. Weather-wise, watch for snow squalls November through March. Pro tip: punch your route into an RV-friendly GPS app like RV Trip Wizard to automatically avoid parkway restrictions.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Parkway%20Restrictions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Mohegan Lake?
You'll find a great mix of options. Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers 30-amp electric sites, potable water fills, a dump station, hot showers, and a swimming beach on Canopus Lake. Croton Point Park has full hookups (water, electric, sewer) plus laundry and Wi-Fi at the main building. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman offers electric sites, dump stations, and the famous Lake Welch swimming beach. The Newburgh KOA delivers full hookups, a pool, and a camp store. Need to dump on the road? Most New York State Parks with campgrounds have free dump stations for registered campers. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground — fills along Route 6 are limited, and you'll thank yourself later.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxWhat features and amenities come with a typical Mohegan Lake RV rental?
More creature comforts than you might expect. Most RVs on RVezy in the Mohegan Lake area come with a real queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 2 to 6 people, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace for cool Hudson Valley nights, and seatbelts for every passenger. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in rural areas, but a personal hotspot fills the gap. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list before booking and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP-compatible outlet or extra propane for cooler October trips.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat popular add-ons can I get with my Mohegan Lake RV rental?
Lots of ways to upgrade your trip. Common add-ons include a kitchen kit (pots, plates, utensils) for around $35 to $75, a linens and bedding package for $50 to $100, an outdoor camping kit with chairs and a table for $25 to $50, a generator-use package, and bike or kayak racks. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home in Mohegan Lake, Yorktown, or Peekskill, often between 12pm and 4pm with morning returns by 11am. Delivery is also widely offered. Mileage policies vary, so confirm yours before signing off. Pro tip: bundling linens and a kitchen kit saves a Costco run and means you literally just pack clothes, food, and a sense of adventure.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/rv-camping.htmHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Mohegan Lake, NY, payment is processed directly through the RVezy platform using a credit or debit card, never pay your host outside the site. You'll see the full breakdown (nightly rate, protection plan, taxes, delivery, add-ons) before confirming. A separate refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV. As long as you return the rig in the agreed condition with the correct fuel and tank levels, the deposit is released after your trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick video at pickup and dropoff to document condition and breeze through deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations to reach from Mohegan Lake by RV?
You're parked at the doorstep of incredible drives. Top picks for a family RV trip Mohegan Lake travelers love include Bear Mountain State Park (about 20 miles, perfect for a day or overnight), Hudson Highlands and Cold Spring (25 miles, charming riverside town), the Catskills around Phoenicia and Woodstock (about 90 miles, waterfalls and tubing), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (90 to 120 miles, Tanglewood and hiking), and Lake George in the Adirondacks (about 180 miles, classic lake vacation). For a longer route, southern Vermont is roughly 3 to 4 hours north. Pro tip: weave in a stop at the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, an easy RV-parking detour and a fun stretch of the legs.
