Camping near Monticello, New York
Monticello sits in Sullivan County in the western Catskills, roughly two hours northwest of New York City off Route 17 (I-86). The town works well as a base for RV renters because it combines highway access, full-service campgrounds, and quick reach to Catskill Park land, Delaware River paddling, and Bethel Woods.
Options close to town lean toward family resorts with hookups and amenities. Happy Days Campground and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Birchwood Acres are both within a short drive, and the larger Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort adds resort-style features suited to kids. Oakland Valley Campground in Cuddebackville offers full hookups about 25 minutes south, and Skyway Camping Resort sits nearby for travelers pairing the Catskills with the Poconos.
For a more rustic experience, the New York State DEC operates Mongaup Pond Campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve, a wooded state facility on a 120-acre lake described as the largest body of water in Catskill Park outside the New York City reservoirs. Reservations run through ReserveAmerica.
Things to do around Monticello
The area is built for a mix of water, trail, and family activities. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, Holiday Mountain, and Resorts World Catskills are all short drives from most local campgrounds, and Monticello Motor Club adds a motorsports option.
Outdoor days center on the Delaware River for tubing, canoeing, and fly fishing on tributaries like the Willowemoc and Beaverkill. Hikers head into the Catskill Forest Preserve for trails on Balsam, Wittenberg, and the fire-tower peaks. Mongaup Pond adds swimming from a designated beach, hand-launch paddling, and shoreline picnic areas.
Rainy-day backups include museum stops at Bethel Woods, the Catskill Fish Hatchery near Livingston Manor, and the covered bridges scattered through Sullivan County.

The practical RV season runs from late May through mid-October. Most private parks in Sullivan County follow this window, and New York State DEC campgrounds like Mongaup Pond operate on a seasonal schedule rather than year-round. Summer weekends, holiday periods, and fall foliage dates fill first.
Late September into mid-October is the peak visual window, when Catskills hardwoods turn red and gold. Foliage weekends at both private resorts and state sites often book out well in advance, and Route 17 traffic thickens on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Cooler nights arrive quickly at higher elevations, so pack for near-freezing lows by late October.
Winter driving in the region can involve snow and ice from December through March, and many campgrounds close outright. A few RV parks along the Route 17 corridor stay open for overnight stops, but expect limited services, closed pools, and reduced staffing outside the main season.

How to book campgrounds near Monticello
New York State DEC campgrounds, including Mongaup Pond, take reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, either online or by phone. Summer weekends and foliage dates can fill within hours of release, so lock dates in as soon as the RV rental is confirmed. A camping permit can only be issued for a maximum of two weeks, and from July 1 through Labor Day, only 14 cumulative days of camping can be obtained at any campground.
Private parks such as Happy Days Campground, Oakland Valley Campground, Skyway Camping Resort, and both Jellystone locations book directly through their own websites or reservation lines. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) at family resorts often require multi-night minimums and deposits.
What to expect on the ground
Most private parks near Monticello offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer hookups, dump stations, hot showers, and on-site laundry. Family resorts add pools, playgrounds, camp stores, and organized activities, which is why sites like the two Jellystone locations and Skyway Camping Resort draw families with young kids.
State campgrounds are a different experience. Mongaup Pond has large wooded sites without individual hookups, a trailer dump station, and a sand beach, and firewood must meet the state's untreated-firewood rules. Swimming is unsupervised by lifeguards, access is from the designated beach area, and swimming is prohibited from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise.
Roads in and out are generally RV-friendly along Route 17, but the smaller county routes toward Bethel, Livingston Manor, and DeBruce are two-lane with curves and grades. Fuel up in Monticello or Liberty before heading deeper into the Catskills.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Monticello, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Monticello, NY?
Good news: RV rental in Monticello is one of the more affordable ways to experience the Catskills. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $60 to $90 per night, Class C motorhomes average $150 to $200, and luxury Class A rigs run higher. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by price range and find a cheap RV rental in Monticello that fits your trip. Weekday bookings outside summer holidays are noticeably cheaper, and booking three or more nights often unlocks weekly discounts. Pro tip: shoulder season trips in late April or late September deliver Catskills foliage and lake access at a fraction of peak July pricing, so you stretch your budget without missing the magic.
sullivancatskills.com/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Monticello, NY?
Great news for first-time renters: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Monticello, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set. Most guests are surprised how quickly the verification clears, which means you can focus on planning your Catskills RV trip instead of paperwork.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-licensesWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Monticello?
Every RVezy booking in Monticello comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit the Quickway with peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection plan level that fits your trip, and your selected plan covers most damages to the RV during your rental. Roadside help is included with every protection plan, which matters when you are winding through rural Sullivan County roads. Pro tip: review the protection plan options before you book a motorhome rental in Monticello so you know exactly what is covered, then enjoy the Catskills knowing the safety net is already in place.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Monticello RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on factors like how far out your trip start date is, which matters in the Catskills where the occasional summer storm or winter snowstorm can affect travel. If something unexpected comes up, RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip to help. Pro tip: book your Monticello RV trip early to secure the rig you want, knowing the grace period gives you breathing room to finalize plans.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Monticello, NY?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Monticello is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see every host who welcomes four-legged co-pilots. Sullivan County is a dream for dog owners: leashed pets are welcome on the trails at Morningside Park, around Kiamesha Lake, and at many sites in nearby Mongaup Pond Campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which you'll see clearly before booking. Pro tip: message the host directly to mention your dog's size and breed so they can recommend the best pet-ready rig, then plan a stop at Bashakill Wildlife Management Area for a scenic on-leash walk.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/mongaup-pondCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Monticello?
Yes, RV delivery in Monticello is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drop the motorhome or travel trailer at your campground, set it up, level it, connect hookups, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no learning curve at the dump station. Popular delivery destinations include Bethel Woods Center for the Arts for concert weekends, Holiday Mountain area sites, and Kittatinny Campgrounds on the Delaware. Pro tip: filter listings by Delivery on RVezy and confirm the delivery fee and radius in the host's listing before you book.
sullivancatskills.com/things-to-do/How far can I travel on an RV road trip from Monticello?
You're in a perfect launch pad for a Catskills RV trip. From Monticello, you can reach Bethel Woods (site of the 1969 Woodstock festival) in 15 minutes, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in about 45 minutes, Minnewaska State Park Preserve in roughly 1 hour, Manhattan in around 2 hours via Route 17 and I-87, and the Adirondack foothills in about 4 hours. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage which is ideal for longer routes. Pro tip: ask the host about their daily mileage allowance and overage rate before booking, then map your stops so you can budget accurately for your RV road trip from Monticello.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhat are the best campgrounds near Monticello, NY?
You have an incredible mix of options for RV camping in Monticello. Mongaup Pond Campground in the nearby Catskill Forest Preserve offers 163 wooded sites on New York's largest body of water outside the Adirondacks. Oakland Valley Campground in Cuddebackville has full hookups and a dump station about 25 minutes away. Beaver Lake Campsites in Smallwood is a family favorite with lake access just 15 minutes from town. Hunter Lake Campground in Parksville and Skyway Camping Resort in Greentown (PA) are also top picks within an hour. Pro tip: state-run sites like Mongaup Pond book months ahead through ReserveAmerica, so lock dates in as soon as you confirm your RV rental.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Monticello, NY?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Monticello, with the absolute peak being late September into mid-October when Catskills foliage explodes into red, gold, and orange. Summer highs sit comfortably in the upper 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit, while nights cool to the 50s and 60s, which is ideal sleeping weather in an RV. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and trout season, and winter dips into the teens and 20s with regular snow, perfect for Holiday Mountain skiing if your host's rig is winter-ready. Pro tip: book leaf-peeping weekends by July, because the foliage rush fills campgrounds and listings fast.
weather.gov/bgm/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Monticello?
You have got this, and you will not be on your own. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through driving, slide-outs, generator, water systems, and dumping so you leave confident. Monticello is friendly territory for first-time renters: Route 17 (the Quickway) is a wide divided highway with easy on-ramps, and most local campgrounds have pull-through sites that do not require backing in. If you are still nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Monticello rather than a Class A. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery for your first trip so you can skip city driving entirely and start your adventure already parked at your campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down near Monticello?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 17B or a dead battery at Mongaup Pond is just a phone call away from help. Dispatch can arrange towing, jump-starts, tire service, lockout help, and fuel delivery across Sullivan County and the surrounding Catskills. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, since local owners often know the closest mechanic or RV service shop. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of your rig's VIN and license plate so you can share details quickly if you ever need assistance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Monticello RV rental into Canada or another state?
Cross-state travel is generally welcome, and many RVezy hosts in Monticello are happy to let you cruise into Pennsylvania (Delaware Water Gap is 45 minutes away), New Jersey (High Point State Park is under an hour), Vermont, or up to the Adirondacks. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on your specific host and the protection package you choose, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-state loop from Monticello, look for hosts offering an RV rental with unlimited mileage, and bring your passport or enhanced driver's license if Canada is on the itinerary.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/western-hemisphere-travel-initiativeWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know the numbers. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, and a campervan rental in Monticello can hit 15 to 20 MPG. New York State gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and you'll find competitive pumps at the Stewart's Shops and Mobil stations along Route 17 in Monticello and Rock Hill. Diesel is available at the larger truck stops in Wurtsboro and Liberty. Pro tip: fill up in Monticello before heading into the Catskills, because prices climb at smaller rural stations near Mongaup Pond and Livingston Manor, and plan one fuel stop per 200 miles of driving.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Monticello?
For the best sites, book your campground as soon as your RV rental in Monticello is confirmed. New York State campgrounds like Mongaup Pond open reservations up to nine months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends plus fall foliage dates fill within hours of release. Private parks like Beaver Lake Campsites and Oakland Valley Campground typically take direct bookings via phone or their websites and recommend 2 to 3 months ahead for peak weekends. For Bethel Woods concert weekends, lock campsites in immediately after the show is announced. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) almost always have availability even in July and August, and rates are noticeably lower for a family RV trip in Monticello.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Monticello?
Driving in and around Monticello is RV-friendly once you know the lay of the land. Route 17 (also called I-86) is the main artery, with wide lanes, gentle grades, and easy access to Liberty, Wurtsboro, and the New York State Thruway. Local routes like 17B to Bethel and 42 toward Forestburgh are scenic two-lane roads with some curves and rolling hills, so take your time. Winters can bring snow and ice from December through March, and summer thunderstorms occasionally roll through fast. Pro tip: avoid downtown Monticello's Broadway during weekday rush hour with a larger rig, and check 511NY before heading out for live traffic and road condition updates across the Catskills.
511ny.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Monticello typically offer?
You'll find well-equipped campgrounds across the Catskills. Most private parks near Monticello, like Oakland Valley Campground and Beaver Lake Campsites, offer 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer hookups, dump stations, hot showers, and on-site laundry. State-run Mongaup Pond Campground has electric at some sites, potable water fill stations, and a centralized dump station but no sewer hookups at individual sites. WiFi quality varies widely in the rural Catskills, so don't count on it for streaming. Pro tip: top off fresh water at your campground before heading out and use the dump station at Oakland Valley or Pleasant Acres Farm Campground on your way home, which saves you from hunting for one along Route 17.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Monticello?
Today's RVezy rentals in Monticello come ready for a real vacation, not roughing it. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable beds (queen or king in many Class C and Class A rigs); dinettes that convert to extra sleeping space; air conditioning and propane furnace; and seatbelts for every passenger listed in the listing's sleeps count. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and confirm the seatbelt count matches your group size before booking, especially for a family RV trip from Monticello where everyone needs a legal spot for the drive to Mongaup Pond or Bethel Woods.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Monticello make trip planning easy with popular add-ons like linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and pet cleaning packages. Pickup is usually scheduled in the early afternoon and drop-off mid-morning, which gives the host time to clean between trips. Mileage policies vary: some hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per day, others list unlimited mileage for an extra fee, all clearly shown on the listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a generator if you're heading to a no-hookup spot like Mongaup Pond, and confirm pickup and drop-off times in writing through the RVezy chat so your Catskills schedule lines up perfectly.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/recreational-vehiclesHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and handled entirely through RVezy, so you never need to hand cash to a host in Monticello. Your rental cost, protection plan, taxes, and add-ons are charged through RVezy at booking, and any optional extras (like extra mileage or propane) are settled through the platform afterward. The security deposit is handled separately from the booking payment and is held before the trip, then released after drop-off assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the rig (interior, exterior, tires, tanks) at pickup and drop-off, share them through the RVezy chat, and you will breeze through deposit release after your Monticello RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Monticello during the winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Monticello is absolutely possible and increasingly popular thanks to Holiday Mountain Ski & Fun Park right in town and Resorts World Catskills nearby. Sullivan County winters bring temperatures from the teens to low 30s Fahrenheit with regular snowfall from December through March, so look for hosts whose rigs have heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a working propane furnace, and shore power capability. Many private parks close in winter, but Oakland Valley Campground and select sites stay open year-round with limited services. Pro tip: ask the host directly about cold-weather readiness, bring extra propane and a heated water hose, and you'll have a cozy Catskills winter basecamp for skiing, snowshoeing, and snowy fireside evenings.
