Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Ivy, NY

Hiking dominates the area. The Appalachian Trail runs the length of Harriman State Park, and trails around Bear Mountain and the Ramapo-Dunderberg ridge are within easy reach of Mount Ivy. Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati offer lifeguarded swim beaches in season, and rowboat and kayak rentals are available at several state-park lakes. Families based at Black Bear Campground can day-trip into New York City, visit the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, or drive to Bear Mountain State Park for the zoo, carousel, and Perkins Memorial Tower. Wawayanda State Park adds lake swimming, boating, and access to a long stretch of the Appalachian Trail on the New Jersey side. Fishing at Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the surrounding ponds at Clarence Fahnestock is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked trout, and winter visitors can add cross-country skiing on groomed trails at Fahnestock Winter Park.

Camping seasons in the Mount Ivy area are compressed. New York and New Jersey state-park campgrounds typically run late spring through fall. Wawayanda's group campsites operate from April 1 to October 31, and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock usually runs from mid-spring into fall when open. Beaver Pond in Harriman follows a similar warm-weather pattern, and Camp Wyanokie typically opens the first weekend in April and closes the last weekend in November. Private parks such as Black Bear operate on a longer schedule. Summer weekends fill fast because of proximity to New York City. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, and weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Peak periods bring larger crowds and full beaches, so midweek stays are noticeably quieter. Fall delivers strong foliage across the Highlands through October and is prime hiking weather. Winter closes most state-park campgrounds, but lakes may be open for ice fishing if conditions allow, and Fahnestock Winter Park offers groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. Portions of Harriman are open to permit deer hunting on weekdays in late fall.

RV renters should plan around each campground's hookup situation. Beaver Pond can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long on select sites, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers; a dump station and shared full-service bathrooms are on site. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock has no hookups or dump station. Black Bear Campground is the local option when full hookups matter. Policies vary. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds, and pets are not allowed. Camp Wyanokie is a rustic tent-only property with roughly ten individual campsites and cannot accommodate trailers, RVs, or pop-ups. Bear activity is common in Harriman and the surrounding Highlands. Store food properly, use provided fire rings only, and expect strict quiet hours at state-park campgrounds.
