Campgrounds and RV parks near Mountain Lodge Park, NY

Hiking is the dominant draw. Schunemunk Mountain State Park rises directly above the hamlet, and the wider region gives access to Harriman State Park and portions of the Appalachian Trail. Lake Welch swimming beach is within walking distance of Beaver Pond Campground, with immediate access to Harriman State Park's extensive network of hiking trails, including portions of the Appalachian Trail. Fishing and paddling are available at nearby lakes and ponds, and Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park covers 15,000 acres with hiking trails, picnic areas, and abundant boating, hunting, fishing, and birding, and is home to the Taconic Outdoor Education Center and Fahnestock Winter Park with groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Storm King, West Point, and the Woodbury Common shopping area are all within a short drive.

The camping season in this part of the Hudson Valley is firmly warm-weather. Local campgrounds typically operate from mid-April through October or early November, with most facilities closing before the first significant snowfall and only limited winter availability. At Beaver Pond in Harriman, the campground opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only for roughly two weeks, then runs a regular reservation season from early May through mid-October. Fahnestock has its own schedule, and travelers should confirm year by year, since the main Fahnestock campground was closed for the 2026 season to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, while the Group Wilderness Campground remained open. Summer weekends draw heavy demand from the New York City metro area and fill first. Spring and fall are cooler and quieter, with fall foliage typically peaking from mid-October into late October. Winter camping options are effectively closed at the state parks, though snowshoeing and cross-country skiing continue at Fahnestock Winter Park when conditions allow.

Expect a mix of rustic state park loops and full-service private parks. At Beaver Pond, sites accommodate up to two tents and six people, select sites fit a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long, and each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill along with shared full-service bathrooms. The campground provides full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry facilities plus a dump station for RVs, but there are no electrical hookups. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond, and pets are not permitted. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock is similarly rustic, with potable water at spigots and hand pumps, no electric or sewer hookups, and shared bathhouses. Private parks along the Newburgh and Route 17 corridors offer full hookups, laundry, and family amenities. Black bears are present in the region, so food storage discipline matters.
