Camping near New Hempstead, New York
New Hempstead sits in Rockland County within easy driving range of the Hudson Highlands and the New Jersey Highlands, giving RV travelers access to state park campgrounds, private RV parks, and rugged backcountry in a single trip radius. The nearest public option is Beaver Pond Campground, located inside Harriman State Park adjacent to Lake Welch, a short drive north of town.
Across the New Jersey line, Wawayanda State Park offers group camping, and Camp Wyanokie in West Milford provides rustic tent sites next to Norvin Green State Forest. For full hookups and an RV-park feel, Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York, operates year-round with 20, 30, and 50-amp service. Farther north in Putnam County, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park normally offers lakeside sites, though campers should confirm current status with the park before planning a trip.
Most public sites in the region are drive-in and suited to smaller rigs, so trailer length limits and hookup availability are the two details worth checking first.
Things to do near New Hempstead
Harriman State Park anchors the area with more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. Lake Welch, walking distance from Beaver Pond, has a protected swimming beach when lifeguards are on duty. The Appalachian Trail crosses both Harriman and Clarence Fahnestock, giving hikers access to long-distance sections without a shuttle.
Across the border, Camp Wyanokie sits at the edge of Norvin Green State Forest with 150 acres of woodland, a five-acre lake for shoreline fishing, and marked trails leading to Wyanokie High Point. Wawayanda State Park adds a glacial lake known for cold-water fish including trout and landlocked salmon, plus a 20-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail through the park.

The public campgrounds in this region run on a spring-to-fall schedule. Beaver Pond Campground opens for walk-in camping in mid-April, with its regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. Wawayanda State Park's group campsites are open April 1 to October 31. The Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock has been closed for construction of a new bathhouse, so RV travelers should check the park website before booking; the park's Group Wilderness Campground remains available by calling the park office.
Summer weekends fill fast. Harriman is roughly an hour from New York City and a favored weekend getaway, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings peak foliage across the Hudson Highlands and lighter crowds midweek. Winter shuts most state-park camping down, but Black Bear Campground operates year-round for RVers who want a cold-weather base with hookups.
Black bears are present throughout Harriman, Fahnestock, and the New Jersey Highlands, so food storage discipline matters in any season.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. How to book campgrounds near New Hempstead
New York State Parks campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and the Pelton Pond area at Clarence Fahnestock, are booked through the Reserve America system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites released at the 9-month window at 8 AM Monday through Friday and 9 AM on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are only permitted until 3 PM, and no walk-ins are allowed.
Wawayanda State Park uses New Jersey's own system at camping.nj.gov, and the park has group sites with picnic tables, fire rings, and a composting restroom. Camp Wyanokie takes reservations only through Campspot, with no on-site staff. Black Bear Campground is a private operator that runs year-round and takes phone reservations.
What to expect at campgrounds near New Hempstead
Expect a mix of rustic state-park sites and full-service private parks. Beaver Pond has 125 sites for up to two tents and six people, with select sites able to accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet, plus picnic tables and fire rings, full-service bathrooms with showers, a laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is allowed per campsite.
At Wawayanda, plan for basic conditions: water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office, and there are no shower facilities. Camp Wyanokie is rustic tent camping only, with no running water, toilets, electricity, or Wi-Fi, and cannot accommodate RVs. Black Bear Campground sits at the other end of the scale, with 154 full-hookup sites, 50-amp service, back-in and pull-thru layouts, and no tent camping.

New York only requires an R endorsement for personal RVs over 26,000 lbs Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or longer than 40 feet, and the overwhelming majority of listings fall well under that. RVezy approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and identity is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that grace period depends on how far in advance you cancel, and special circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters are considered, which is helpful in a region that occasionally sees nor'easters or hurricane remnants moving up the Hudson Valley. You will see the full policy summary during checkout. Pro tip: book early to secure the best New Hempstead RV rental for summer weekends, knowing you have flexibility built in if plans change.

Croton Point Park across the Hudson rounds out the list with riverfront sites. Pro tip: book Harriman as early as nine months ahead for summer weekends.
parks.ny.gov/camping/beaver-pond/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in New Hempstead, NY?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot, with the absolute best window running from mid-May to mid-October. Daytime highs average in the low 70s to low 80s°F during summer, while winters can drop to the low 20s°F with snow, so most campgrounds (including Beaver Pond) operate seasonally. September and early October are insider favorites: temperatures sit in the comfortable 60s and 70s, bugs disappear, and the Hudson Valley foliage explodes into reds and golds. Pro tip: book a Harriman or Catskills RV trip the last weekend of September or first weekend of October for legendary leaf-peeping, and reserve at least 4 to 6 months in advance.

You will be in good hands, even if it is your first time renting an RV. You can also message the host directly through the listing with any pre-booking questions. For first-timers in New Hempstead, a Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer is a sweet spot: easy to handle on the Palisades Parkway and small enough to fit Harriman's Beaver Pond sites. Pro tip: do a short practice loop in a quiet parking lot like the Palisades Center before heading north.

Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to the vehicle. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's VIN, license plate, and roadside contact card at pickup so you can share details quickly if you ever need help.

To avoid any deposit issues, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and tank-dump instructions, and return on time. Pro tip: do the walk-around video with the host on both ends, since clear documentation is the fastest way to a full deposit refund after your Hudson Valley adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksI'm close to NYC. Can I use an RV to visit the city, and where can I park it?
Yes, but smartly. New Hempstead sits about 35 miles north of midtown Manhattan, which makes it a perfect base because you avoid the challenge of driving an RV into the city. New York City restricts overnight RV parking on most streets, has many low-clearance parkways, and parking garages rarely fit anything over 6'8". Instead, park your RV at a Rockland County campground or RVezy host driveway, then drive your tow car or take Metro-North from Tarrytown or the Coach USA Short Line bus from Suffern straight into Port Authority. Pro tip: cheap RV rental New Hempstead bookings paired with public transit will beat NYC hotel prices and traffic every time.
