Camping near New Paltz
New Paltz sits at the base of the Shawangunk Ridge in the mid-Hudson Valley, roughly 90 miles north of New York City and within a short drive of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, Mohonk Preserve, and the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. The town works well as an RV base for climbing, hiking, and Hudson River sightseeing, with orchards, wineries, and farm stands surrounding the village core.
RV travelers typically choose between private resorts and state park campgrounds within a 30 to 45 minute drive. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lazy River and Rondout Valley RV Campground offer full hookup options, while New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday provides a Hudson Valley base closer to I-84. So-Hi Campgrounds is a smaller private option in the immediate area.
For a state park stay along the Hudson, Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park in nearby Staatsburg accepts tents, trailers, and RVs, though the park does not provide hookup facilities at campsites. Camping is not permitted inside Minnewaska State Park Preserve itself, so overnight RV plans must be built around private grounds or the Norrie campground.
Things to do near New Paltz
Hiking and rock climbing dominate the outdoor menu. The Shawangunks contain three adjacent conservation areas: Sam's Point, Minnewaska State Park Preserve, and Mohonk Preserve, with the private Mohonk Mountain House trail system inside that footprint. Popular routes include the Lake Minnewaska Loop, Awosting Falls, Gertrude's Nose, and the Labyrinth and Lemon Squeeze scramble at Mohonk.
Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lazy River get on-site water features and organized activities that pair well with rest days between hikes. The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail runs directly through the village of New Paltz, giving flat, family-friendly biking and walking access from several nearby campgrounds.
Off the trail, expect apple picking in fall, cider and craft beverage tastings, the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, and Hudson River boating access at the Norrie Marina at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park.

The core RV camping window runs roughly May through mid-October. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park's campground operates on a defined seasonal schedule, generally opening in late April and closing in mid-October, so RV plans depending on that campground should confirm current opening and closing dates before booking.
Summer brings warm, humid weather and the region's heaviest visitation, especially on weekends when Minnewaska parking lots and Mohonk trailheads fill early. Weekday arrivals and pre-9 a.m. trailhead starts help avoid closures at capacity. Fall is the marquee season, with cooler nights, foliage color across the Shawangunks and Hudson Valley, and busy weekends at orchards and wineries.
Winter camping options are limited because most private RV parks and the state campground close for the season. Mohonk Preserve trails remain open year-round for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, weather permitting, and Sam's Point requires timed parking reservations on weekends and holidays from April 15 through November 15.

How to book
New York State Parks campgrounds, including Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, are booked through ReserveAmerica online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance of the arrival date on a rolling window.
Private campgrounds such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lazy River, New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Rondout Valley RV Campground, and So-Hi Campgrounds accept direct bookings through their own websites or booking platforms. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends fill first, so book several months out for July, August, and October stays.
For day access to Sam's Point, timed parking reservations through ReserveAmerica are required on weekends and holidays from April 15 through November 15 and can be purchased up to 14 days ahead, with separate morning and afternoon sessions.
What to expect on-site
Hookup availability varies widely. Private resorts near New Paltz generally offer water, electric, and sewer sites plus dump stations, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park welcomes RVs but does not provide hookup facilities at campsites, so plan for generator use where allowed, or top off water and dump on arrival and departure. A pump-out station is available at the Norrie Marina.
Sites at state park campgrounds tend to be wooded and closer together than at private resorts. Firewood is regulated in New York: untreated firewood may only be moved from within a 50-mile radius of the campground.
Cellular coverage is generally reliable in the village and along U.S. 44/55 but can drop in the ridge interior at Minnewaska and Mohonk. Bears are present in the Shawangunks, so store food securely, and expect deer, ticks, and, on summer evenings, mosquitoes near ponds and marshes.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near New Paltz, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in New Paltz, NY?
RV rental in New Paltz, NY is often more affordable than a Hudson Valley hotel during peak foliage season. On RVezy, travel trailers typically run $90 to $180 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $295, and camper vans land between $125 and $225. You can lower costs by booking midweek, traveling in May or early June before summer peaks, or filtering by Instant Book to spot last-minute deals. Many New Paltz hosts offer weekly discounts, which makes a leaf-peeping week through the Shawangunks budget-friendly. Use the price filter and sort by lowest to find a cheap RV rental New Paltz travelers love.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Paltz%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in New Paltz?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Paltz, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs, including Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and camper vans available on RVezy. You will need to be 25 or older and upload a valid driver's license, which RVezy verifies securely through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. That is it, no road test, no special class. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the New Paltz RV trip pickup process actually is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV protected if something happens during my trip in New Paltz?
Yes, every RV rental in New Paltz booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Shawangunks with confidence. The protection plan helps cover eligible damage to the RV during your trip (note: this is not traditional auto insurance). During checkout, you choose your protection level based on the coverage and deductible that fits your trip, the choice is yours, not the host's. If you are new to RVing or driving the winding roads up to Minnewaska State Park Preserve, a higher-tier plan is worth the small upcharge for the added peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my New Paltz trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation, including a grace period right after you book, so you are not locked in the moment you confirm. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. Because the policy is managed by RVezy and not by individual hosts, you get the same fair process whether you book a campervan rental New Paltz weekend or a two-week motorhome rental New Paltz adventure. Review the exact terms shown at checkout, and reach out to RVezy support anytime if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in New Paltz?
Absolutely, many New Paltz hosts welcome pets, and the area is one of the most dog-friendly corners of the Hudson Valley. To find a pet-friendly RV rental New Paltz dogs will love, just use the Pet-Friendly filter when you search RVezy. Once you arrive, leash up and explore the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, which runs right through the village and is paws-down a local favorite, or hit the carriage roads at Mohonk Preserve, where dogs are permitted on leash with a day-use pass. Minnewaska State Park Preserve also allows leashed dogs on most trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and ask about pet-friendly campgrounds along your route.
parks.ny.gov/parks/minnewaskaCan the RV be delivered to my campground or rental house in New Paltz?
Yes, RV delivery in New Paltz is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you are flying into Stewart International Airport or arriving by train at Poughkeepsie Station. Many RVezy hosts in the New Paltz area offer delivery and setup directly to nearby campgrounds like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Gardiner, Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY, or to a private driveway. Your host will level the RV, connect power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter to see which hosts deliver and how far. Delivery is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV: you skip the highway and start the vacation immediately.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Paltz%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive, and what mileage policies should I expect?

Most RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available at roughly $0.30 to $0.50 each, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer road trip from New Paltz. For perspective: Minnewaska State Park Preserve is about 12 miles away, Mohonk Preserve about 7 miles, the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie about 20 miles, Woodstock about 25 miles, and the Catskills high peaks near Phoenicia about 40 miles. Even a multi-day loop fits comfortably. If you are planning to push north to Lake George (about 170 miles), filter for unlimited-mileage listings before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Paltz%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near New Paltz for RVs?

parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from New Paltz?
New Paltz shines from late April through late October, with three standout windows. Late spring (May to mid-June) brings 60 to 75°F days, blooming mountain laurel, and waterfalls roaring at Minnewaska. Summer (July to August) is warm and lively at 75 to 85°F, perfect for swimming at Lake Awosting. The crown jewel is fall foliage, late September through mid-October, when the Shawangunk Ridge erupts in red, orange, and gold and temperatures sit at a crisp 50 to 70°F. Winters are cold (often 20 to 35°F) with about 49 inches of annual snowfall, so most campgrounds close November through March. Pro tip: book your foliage week by July, this is one of the most popular leaf-peeping regions in the Northeast.
weather.gov/aly/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay in New Paltz?
You will be just fine, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping tanks, and they are a text away during your trip. New Paltz is an ideal place to learn: Route 299 and Route 32 are gentle two-lane roads, and the New York State Thruway (I-87) is wide, well-maintained, and minutes from town. Avoid steep narrow climbs like the Mohonk Mountain House gatehouse road in a big rig. For your first trip, choose a Class B campervan or a 24-foot Class C: they handle and park much like a large van and make the winding approach to Minnewaska genuinely easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down or have an issue on the road near New Paltz?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering flats, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing when needed across the U.S. and Canada. If something goes sideways on the way to Mohonk Preserve or coming down from the Catskills via Route 28, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions, and RVezy customer support backs you up before, during, and after your trip. Save the RVezy roadside number to your phone before you leave New Paltz, and snap a photo of the propane shutoff and main breaker during your walkthrough.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best road trips I can take from New Paltz?
New Paltz is a perfect launchpad for an RV road trip in any direction. Head about 25 miles north to Woodstock and the Catskill High Peaks for hiking and small-town charm. Drive about 40 miles to North-South Lake Campground near Haines Falls for stunning Hudson Valley overlooks. Push about 90 miles south toward the Jersey Shore, or about 170 miles north to Lake George and the Adirondacks. For a New England loop, the Berkshires in Massachusetts are about 75 miles east and Vermont's Green Mountains are about 180 miles north. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and proper documentation, so message the host first. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Foliage peaks earlier the further north you drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel during my New Paltz RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A motorhomes 7 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, expect 10 to 14 MPG. Gas in the New Paltz area typically runs slightly above the national average; the cheapest stations are usually along Route 299 and at the New Paltz exit (Exit 18) of I-87. For a weekend loop of 200 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $70 to $110 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in New Paltz before heading into the Catskills, prices climb noticeably once you're up in the mountains around Phoenicia and Tannersville.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Paltz?
Earlier is better, especially for weekends. For New York State Parks like Mills Norrie or North-South Lake, reservations open up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer and fall foliage weekends sell out within hours of opening. Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Gardiner and Rondout Valley Campground typically book 3 to 6 months ahead for peak season. Midweek stays are far easier to grab, often available a week or two out. If you are chasing peak Shawangunk foliage from late September to mid-October, reserve by July at the latest, and consider Sunday-to-Thursday stays for the same scenery at lower prices and no crowds.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around New Paltz?
Driving around New Paltz is straightforward and RV-friendly for most of the year. The New York State Thruway (I-87) runs right past town with a dedicated Exit 18, and Route 299 west toward the Shawangunks is paved, wide, and scenic. Be aware of a few local quirks: the historic stone arch area in downtown New Paltz has tight turns (avoid Huguenot Street in a Class A), the climb up Route 44/55 toward Minnewaska is steep and winding so take it slow in low gear, and the Wallkill River bridge can get gusty. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March. Stick to Route 299 and Route 32 for the smoothest big-rig access to local campgrounds.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities do New Paltz area campgrounds offer?
You will find a great range of options. Private parks like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Gardiner, Rondout Valley Campground, and Black Bear Campground offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and dump stations. New York State Park campgrounds like Mills Norrie and North-South Lake typically provide electric and water at sites with a centralized dump station, but no sewer hookups. Most parks have potable water fill stations and bathhouses with hot showers. If you are heading into the Catskills without a sewer hookup, dump your tanks at North-South Lake Campground's dump station before driving home, and top off fresh water in New Paltz before you leave.
parks.ny.gov/camping/rv-trailer.aspxWhat is inside the RVs available in New Paltz?
You will be impressed by how comfortably equipped the rentals are. Most RVezy listings in New Paltz come with a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both heat and air conditioning, comfortable beds sleeping 2 to 8 people, dinette seating with seatbelts for travel, and outdoor awnings for relaxing at camp. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, generator or solar setup, leveling blocks, camping chairs, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi varies, with some hosts offering a hotspot as an add-on. Filter by sleeps count and check the listing's amenity list before booking, especially if you need a specific bed configuration for a family RV trip in New Paltz, like bunks for the kids.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Paltz%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent in New Paltz?
You can customize your trip with helpful add-ons most hosts offer. Common picks include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and tables, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Delivery and setup is one of the most popular add-ons in New Paltz, with many hosts offering delivery to nearby campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Pickup is typically at the host's location in or near New Paltz, with afternoon pickup and morning return windows. Mileage allowances usually run 100 to 150 free miles per night. Bundle delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit for the most hands-off New Paltz RV trip possible, you will arrive to a fully ready home on wheels.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=New%20Paltz%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: the entire transaction happens through RVezy, so you never hand cash to a host. Your total (rental, fees, taxes, protection plan, and any add-ons) is charged to your card when you book. A refundable security deposit is placed as a separate hold before pickup, with the amount depending on the RV and the protection level you chose. The hold is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean, undamaged, and with the same fuel and propane levels. Take time-stamped photos and a short video of the interior, exterior, tires, and tanks at both pickup and drop-off, it is the easiest way to ensure a quick security deposit release after your New Paltz RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in New Paltz during winter?
Yes, winter RVing in New Paltz can be magical, think snowy Shawangunk vistas and quiet trails at Minnewaska without the summer crowds. Some RVezy hosts offer winter-ready RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces. Confirm winterization features and ask the host about cold-weather operation during your walkthrough. Most local campgrounds close November through March, but Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY stays open year-round with full hookups, and many hosts will deliver and set up at a private property with shore power. Nighttime temperatures regularly hit the teens from December through February, so plan to stay on shore power, keep the furnace running, and let a faucet trickle to protect the lines.
