Campgrounds near New Square

New Square sits in Rockland County, New York, roughly an hour northwest of Manhattan and within easy reach of the Hudson Highlands, the Ramapo Mountains, and the northern New Jersey Skylands. That location puts RV travelers within a short drive of several established state park campgrounds and a handful of private options, most catering to weekend traffic from the greater New York metro. The closest full-service option is Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park, adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area in New York's second-largest state park. Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park lies farther north in Putnam County, offering wooded sites along a small pond with lake access nearby at Canopus Lake. Wawayanda State Park across the New Jersey line adds another state-run option with a large lake and extensive trails. For smaller or more rustic setups, Camp Wyanokie sits in the Norvin Green area of northern New Jersey, and Black Bear Campground near Florida, New York, offers a privately run alternative with more RV-oriented amenities.

Things to do near New Square

Hiking dominates the area. The Appalachian Trail crosses both Harriman State Park and Clarence Fahnestock State Park, and the surrounding ridges hold hundreds of miles of blazed trails ranging from short pond loops to full-day scrambles over open rock summits. Bear Mountain, Anthony's Nose, and the peaks around Norvin Green State Forest are common day-trip targets. Water recreation is a strong second draw. Lake Welch at Harriman, Canopus Lake at Fahnestock, and Wawayanda Lake all offer swimming beaches, rowboat and kayak rentals, and stocked fishing during the warm months. Families typically pair camping with visits to the Bear Mountain Zoo and Trailside Museum, the West Point Visitors Center, or the Hudson River towns of Cold Spring and Beacon for shops, food, and train access back toward the city.

Camping season in this part of the lower Hudson Valley runs roughly from mid-April through late October. Beaver Pond at Harriman opens for limited walk-in camping in mid-April and shifts to full reservation operation in early May through mid-October. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock follows a similar mid-May to mid-October window, and Wawayanda State Park in New Jersey is open from April 1 through October 31. Winter camping is not available at these state park sites, though day use continues year-round for hiking and, at Fahnestock Winter Park, cross-country skiing. Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busiest period. Sites at the state park campgrounds regularly book out weeks in advance, and holiday weekends often sell out as soon as the reservation window opens. Fall is a popular alternative. Foliage in the Hudson Highlands typically peaks in mid to late October, bringing heavy day-use traffic but slightly easier campground availability midweek. Spring is the quietest stretch, with cool nights, wet trails, and active black fly and tick season into early summer.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campsites near New Square

New York State Parks, including Harriman and Clarence Fahnestock, use ReserveAmerica for online reservations. Sites can be booked up to nine months in advance, with the booking window opening at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends. Reservations less than 14 days out generally have to be arranged by calling the park directly rather than through the website. New Jersey state parks, including Wawayanda, book through the state's own portal at camping.nj.gov rather than ReserveAmerica, with a longer 11-month window. Wawayanda's campsites are group-oriented, so verify group-size minimums before booking. Private options such as Black Bear Campground handle reservations directly through their own website or by phone. For summer weekends, opening the reservation window at the earliest allowed date is the practical difference between getting a preferred loop and taking whatever remains.

What to expect at area campgrounds

Most state park campgrounds in this region are wooded, hilly, and rustic by RV-park standards. Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman has no electrical hookups, caps RVs and trailers at 30 feet, and does not permit pets, but does offer showers, laundry, and a dump station. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock accepts rigs up to 40 feet and has restrooms with showers and a dump station on site. Wawayanda's campsites are primitive group sites with no showers and no water at the sites themselves. Cell service is spotty across the Ramapos and Hudson Highlands, and interior park roads are narrow and winding. Larger Class A motorhomes should confirm site length and access before booking. Black bears are active throughout the region, so proper food storage is enforced, and ticks are common from spring through fall.
