Campgrounds near Oakdale, New York
Oakdale sits on the south shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, giving RV travelers quick access to Great South Bay, Fire Island, and both state and national park campgrounds. The closest option is Heckscher State Park, a 1,600-acre park on the shore of Great South Bay with shady picnic groves, open fields, and paved multi-use trails. It is the main developed RV base within a short drive of town.
A short ferry ride from Patchogue reaches Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island's eastern end, with 20 sand tent sites and 8 safari tent glamping sites reached by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry. This is a walk-in barrier-island site, not an RV park, but it pairs well with an RV base on the mainland.
For RV trips farther afield, the north shore offers Wildwood State Park, 600 acres of hardwood forest on a high bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. Private options such as Totoket Valley RV Park and Connecticut's Kettletown State Park extend the range across Long Island Sound.
Things to do near Oakdale
Water recreation dominates the area. Heckscher State Park provides opportunities for bay swimming, boat launching, sail boarding, kayaking, and canoeing on Great South Bay, along with paved multi-use trails for hiking and biking. Families can combine a bay swim with a picnic and short bike loop in a single afternoon.
Fire Island is the marquee day trip. Watch Hill sits on the western edge of the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness and offers ocean beaches, a visitor center, a marina, a self-guided nature trail, and ranger-led interpretive programs in season, including guided kayak tours of the salt marsh.
Up on the north shore, Wildwood State Park has 2 miles of beach on Long Island Sound for fishing and swimming, plus twelve miles of marked trails, a volleyball court, basketball courts, ball fields, and playgrounds.

The mainland state-park camping season runs spring through fall. At Wildwood State Park, camping season begins the first weekend of April and ends on Columbus Day weekend, and Heckscher operates on a similar warm-season schedule from late spring through early fall. Summer weekends fill first, and holiday weekends often carry multi-night minimums, including a 7-night minimum during Wildwood's core season and a 3-night minimum during peak season.
Fire Island runs on its own calendar. Watch Hill Campground sites are typically available from mid-May to mid-October, and the campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS. Ferry service from Patchogue also operates on a seasonal schedule that shapes arrival and departure windows.
In Connecticut, plans should account for storm damage. Kettletown State Park Campground remains closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to flood damage from an unprecedented heavy rainfall event in August 2024, with a reopening date not yet determined.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campgrounds near Oakdale
New York state park sites are booked through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights.
Fire Island uses a separate system. Watch Hill Campground reservations are not available on Recreation.gov; bookings are handled through the LoveFINS concessioner website, and ferry schedules from Patchogue determine arrival windows.
Connecticut state parks book through their own ReserveAmerica portal, with sites bookable up to 11 months ahead, though Kettletown State Park Campground is closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Private parks such as Totoket Valley RV Park book directly with the operator.
What to expect
Expect coastal, family-oriented camping rather than remote wilderness. Pets are not permitted at Heckscher State Park campsites or cottages, and pets are also prohibited at Wildwood State Park and at the Kettletown campground, so plan pet care before booking. Sites at the state parks include picnic tables, and firewood is sold at concessionaire camp stores.
Fire Island is a different experience. Transportation to Watch Hill Campground is by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue, so RVs stay on the mainland and campers walk on with gear. Campfires are not allowed, and only charcoal or camp stoves can be used for cooking.
At Wildwood, quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., though trailer generators may be run outside those hours. Traffic on the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway can be heavy on summer Fridays and Sundays, so time arrivals accordingly.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakdale%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Oakdale, NY?

Approved drivers must generally be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right in the booking flow, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my Oakdale RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Oakdale, NY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover accidental damage to the vehicle, giving you peace of mind while exploring the Great South Bay or heading east toward Montauk. During checkout you can choose between different protection levels depending on the coverage you want, and this choice is yours, not the host's. Roadside assistance covers situations like flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing, so help is one phone call away if something happens on the Long Island Expressway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Oakdale RV booking?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy (hosts do not set this themselves), which includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. After that, your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel before your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy helps you get a refund or rebooking support. You do not need to memorize the details before booking, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. That flexibility is one reason first-timers feel comfortable locking in an Oakdale RV trip months ahead.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Oakdale, NY?
Yes, many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Oakdale and across Suffolk County. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings that welcome dogs, then message the host to confirm any size or breed details. Long Island is great for dog owners: Heckscher State Park in nearby East Islip has leashed-dog trails along the Great South Bay, and Connetquot River State Park Preserve right next to Oakdale has miles of shaded paths perfect for an after-dinner walk. Pack a collapsible water bowl, since summer pavement on Long Island gets very hot in July and August.
parks.ny.gov/parks/connetquotriver/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to me in Oakdale or to a nearby campground?
Yes, RV delivery in Oakdale is one of the most popular options for first-time renters, especially if driving a 30-foot motorhome down Sunrise Highway feels intimidating. Many RVezy hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental in Oakdale right at Heckscher State Park, a nearby private campground, or even your driveway. They level the rig, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then review each host's delivery radius and fee on the listing. It is the easiest way to start a stress-free Long Island RV trip.
parks.ny.gov/parks/heckscher/details.aspxHow far can I drive on an Oakdale RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have real range. Many Oakdale hosts on RVezy offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some list RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for an RV road trip from Oakdale to Montauk Point (about 75 miles east), the Catskills (about 130 miles northwest), or the Jersey Shore. Additional miles typically run a small per-mile fee if you exceed your allotment, listed clearly on each host's page. Before booking, message the host with your rough itinerary; many will bundle extra miles for popular routes like the North Fork wine country loop or a Hamptons weekend. Filter by mileage policy on RVezy to compare options side by side.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakdale%2C%20New%20YorkWhat are the best campgrounds near Oakdale, NY for an RV?
You have great options nearby. Top campgrounds near Oakdale, NY include Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 6 miles away, with RV sites near the Great South Bay), Wildwood State Park in Wading River (about 40 miles east, with hardwood forest and Long Island Sound views), Indian Island County Park in Riverhead (camping along the Peconic River), Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton (classic Hamptons coastline), and Hither Hills State Park near Montauk (oceanfront sites). New York State Park sites open for reservations months ahead through ReserveAmerica, so set a calendar reminder for popular summer weekends.
parks.ny.gov/parks/wildwood/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Oakdale, NY?
Long Island offers a long, generous camping season. The sweet spot for RV camping in Oakdale runs from mid-May through mid-October, when daytime highs typically sit between 65F and 85F and nights are comfortable. July and August bring peak beach weather and peak crowds, while September is a local favorite: warm Atlantic water, fewer mosquitoes, and beautiful light along the Great South Bay. April and late October can be cool (40s to 60s) but lovely for hiking Connetquot River State Park Preserve in fall colors. Winter camping is possible at a few parks if your rental has heated tanks, but most Oakdale hosts focus on the April through November window.
weather.gov/okx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Oakdale?
You will do great, and you are not alone: first time renting an RV is exactly what RVezy is built for. Every Oakdale host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering how to start the generator, dump the tanks, deploy the awning, and drive safely, with no time pressure. If you would rather skip the driving entirely, book a host who offers delivery and setup, and your rig will be waiting plugged in at the campsite. For your first drive, stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495) or Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and avoid the historic Long Island parkways, which ban commercial vehicles and have low overpasses. Easy wins build confidence quickly.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Parkway%20Restrictions.pdfWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Oakdale trip?
You are never stranded. Every RV rental in Oakdale, NY booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so one phone call gets help dispatched whether you are on the Long Island Expressway, near Montauk Lighthouse, or pulled over on Route 27A. Coverage includes flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a message away in the RVezy app for quick questions like where the fuse box is. Take a phone photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup; it speeds up the roadside assistance call when you need it most.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oakdale RV rental into other states or to Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is a big part of why people rent. From Oakdale you are well positioned for a multi-state RV road trip: the New Jersey shore, the Connecticut shoreline via the Bridgeport-to-Port Jefferson ferry (a shortcut that skips NYC traffic), Vermont's Green Mountains (about 250 miles), or the White Mountains of New Hampshire (about 350 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's insurance and policies, so confirm with the host before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an Oakdale RV trip?
Here is a realistic picture so you can budget with confidence. Class B campervans (Oakdale's most efficient option) get about 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes about 7 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10 to 14 MPG combined). Long Island gas prices typically run above the national average, so check current pump prices before you go. For a long-weekend trip from Oakdale to Montauk and back (about 160 miles round trip) in a Class C, plan on roughly 15 to 20 gallons of fuel. Fill up off-Island before crossing back over the Throgs Neck Bridge to save money.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oakdale?
Book early and you will thank yourself. New York State Parks (including nearby Heckscher, Wildwood, and Hither Hills) open reservations months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends, especially around July 4th and Labor Day, fill quickly. Suffolk County parks like Smith Point and Cedar Point open reservations in early spring. For shoulder-season trips in May, June, or September, you can often find spots 3 to 4 weeks out. Local tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) at Heckscher State Park are noticeably easier to score than Friday check-ins.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are driving conditions like around Oakdale, NY for an RV?
Long Island driving is manageable if you know two key things. First, the historic Long Island parkways (Northern State, Southern State, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, and the Belt Parkway) ban commercial vehicles and have low stone-arch overpasses, so route your RV onto the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway (Route 27), or Veterans Memorial Highway instead. Second, traffic on the LIE is heavy on weekday afternoons and Friday evenings heading east in summer; leaving Oakdale before 2 p.m. or after 7 p.m. makes for a smoother run to the Hamptons. Terrain is flat, so there are no mountain grades to worry about.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Parkway%20Restrictions.pdfWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Oakdale?
You will find a good range. Heckscher State Park has electric hookups at many RV sites, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station, but no individual sewer hookups at the site (typical for NY state parks). Wildwood State Park offers water and electric at many sites plus a dump station. Some private parks on Long Island offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer). Pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp-to-15-amp adapter; together they cover almost every Long Island scenario. Always check each campground's site listing for the exact amenities at the specific site you book.
parks.ny.gov/parks/heckscher/details.aspxWhat is actually inside the RVs available to rent in Oakdale?
You will be impressed by how complete these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Oakdale booked on RVezy comes with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, a propane furnace, and dining seating that converts to extra sleeping space. Most Class Cs sleep 5 to 7 people comfortably with travel seatbelts, while campervans typically sleep 2 to 4. Many hosts include a flat-screen TV, a generator for off-grid use, an outdoor awning, and camp chairs. Each RVezy listing details the included amenities, so a quick scroll tells you exactly what is onboard before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakdale%2C%20New%20YorkWhat popular add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular RVezy add-ons for an Oakdale rental include linen and bedding kits, kitchen packages with pots, pans, and dishware, outdoor camp chair sets, bike racks, generator use, and pet cleaning fees if you are bringing your dog. Add-on pricing is shown directly on each listing. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Oakdale in the early afternoon, with drop-off mid-morning, similar to a campground checkout. Many hosts allow flexible windows if you message ahead. Filter by Instant Book on RVezy if you want to confirm your dates immediately without waiting for host approval.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oakdale%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform when you book, never in cash to the host, which protects both sides and keeps your protection plan active. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card before pickup and released back to you after drop-off, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walk-around video with the host at pickup, return with the same fuel level, empty the tanks if required, and message the host through the app for anything unexpected. Clear communication keeps everyone happy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Oakdale, NY?
Oakdale's central south-shore location makes it an excellent launch pad. Top picks for an RV road trip from Oakdale include Montauk Point and Hither Hills State Park (about 80 miles east, with oceanfront camping and the famous lighthouse); the North Fork wine country around Greenport (about 65 miles, with vineyards and Orient Beach State Park); the Catskills (about 130 miles, for hiking and waterfalls); Cape Cod, Massachusetts (about 230 miles, with a Port Jefferson to Bridgeport ferry shortcut that avoids NYC traffic); and the Jersey Shore at Cape May (about 200 miles). Book the Cross Sound or Bridgeport ferry in advance for the Connecticut shortcut, since RV rates depend on vehicle length.
