Campgrounds near Pelham, New York
Pelham sits in southern Westchester County, just outside the Bronx, which puts campers within a short drive of both urban waterfront parks and the wooded Hudson Highlands. There are no campgrounds inside Pelham itself, so trip planning centers on picking a base that matches the trip: city sightseeing, family swimming and hiking, or quieter forested camping farther north.
The closest RV-friendly option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, a practical basecamp for visiting New York City with hookups, restrooms, showers, and laundry. In Brooklyn, Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area offers tent and RV sites without water or electric hookups, typically open April through October.
For a traditional state-park experience, Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park has campsites, some with raised platforms, and select sites that can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long, adjacent to Lake Welch. Farther north, Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits along the western shore of Pelton Pond, though the campground is closed for the 2026 season for bathhouse construction. Camp Wyanokie, a rustic option in the northern New Jersey Highlands, rounds out the choices for tent-oriented groups.
Things to do near Pelham
From a Jersey City base, the draw is Manhattan itself, with ferry, PATH, and light-rail links a short walk from Liberty Harbor RV Park. Families can pair sightseeing with waterfront walks at Liberty State Park.
At Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area, the campground provides access to hiking, biking, birding, and historic tours of airports and forts, with ranger-led programs available in summer. The adjacent Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge draws roughly 300 species of migratory birds. Harriman State Park is built for active trips: extensive trails ranging from easy to strenuous, lakes and swimming beaches at Lake Welch, plus fishing and paddling.
At Clarence Fahnestock, Canopus Lake has a sandy shore, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the park's four ponds targets bass, pickerel, perch, and trout, with rowboats and kayaks available for rental.

Winter shifts the region toward day use. Clarence Fahnestock is home to Fahnestock Winter Park, which includes groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as an area for sledding. How to book near Pelham
New York state park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond at Harriman and Pelton Pond at Fahnestock, are booked through the ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday to Friday and 9AM weekends from March 15 through Labor Day. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites.
Reservations at Camp Gateway / Floyd Bennett Field are handled through Recreation.gov. Liberty Harbor RV Park is booked directly with the operator.
For holidays and summer weekends, secure Harriman sites as soon as the 9-month window opens, and expect Liberty Harbor to fill during major NYC events. Confirm Fahnestock status directly before planning, since the campground is closed for the 2026 season.
What to expect
Hookups vary widely. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups for trailers, and Fahnestock has no hookups or dump station at the campground. Camp Gateway RV sites have no water or electric hookups either, but there is a dump station and generators are allowed from 8 AM to 10 PM. Liberty Harbor offers water and electric plus a dump station.
RV length limits matter. Select Beaver Pond sites accommodate smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans up to 30 feet long. Rules also differ: alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond Campgrounds, and no pets are permitted. Bear activity is present in the Harriman area, so follow posted food-storage guidelines.
