Campgrounds and RV parks near Poestenkill, NY

Day trips from a Poestenkill base cluster around water, trails, and history. Black River Pond at Cherry Plain State Park has a sandy beach and calm water for non-motorized boating, with rowboats and paddle boats available for rental, plus bridle paths and multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing in winter. Anglers fish the pond for bass, bullheads, and pickerel. Grafton Lakes State Park is a short drive north and adds a swimming beach, paddling, and a broader trail network. Downtown Troy, roughly a half hour west, offers riverfront walks, farmers' markets, and family restaurants. The Berkshires and Bennington, Vermont are both within a day-trip radius for museums, covered bridges, and mountain drives. At private grounds like Alps Family Campground, on-site amenities such as a pool, playground, and organized activities keep kids busy without moving the RV.

The Poestenkill area follows a typical Northeast camping calendar. Cherry Plain State Park operates seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, opening for day use and camping on Fridays and weekends through the last weekend in June, then daily through Labor Day. Outside those dates the campground is closed, and the park office reroutes calls to Grafton Lakes State Park. Alps Family Campground's season runs from May 1 to October 15, which is representative of most private RV parks in the area. A limited number of sites at Alps stay open year-round for self-contained RVs, along with cabins and trailers for rent. Summer weekends and holiday periods including Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are the busiest and book out first. The fall shoulder season brings foliage and cooler nights, while winter camping options are limited to the handful of parks that keep a small year-round loop open. As in many wooded areas of New York, ticks can be a concern, so visitors are advised to take precautions.

Expect a rural, wooded setting with rolling terrain. Roads into private parks can be narrow, so drivers of larger rigs should confirm site length limits when booking. Alps Family Campground reports accommodating vehicles up to 65 feet and offers 30-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups at many sites. Hookup availability varies. Private grounds in the area typically offer water and electric at every site with sewer at many, while state-park sites at Cherry Plain are more basic. Cherry Plain has 30 total sites split among trailer, lakeside tent, and hike-in tent sites, with modern restrooms and showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Cell service is generally usable in the valleys and stronger closer to Troy and Albany. Groceries, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest to source on the Route 43 corridor toward Averill Park or in the Troy suburbs before heading up to camp.
