Port Chester camping overview
Port Chester sits in southern Westchester County on the New York and Connecticut border, within easy reach of both Long Island Sound and the Hudson Highlands. RV travelers based here have access to a mix of state park campgrounds, a National Park Service site, and a private urban RV park serving greater New York City. Options range from wooded, primitive sites without hookups to full water and electric hookups within sight of the Manhattan skyline.
The closest state park campground is Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, roughly an hour northwest in Rockland County. Farther north in the Hudson Highlands, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers a quieter, forested base. To the south, Floyd Bennett Field at Gateway National Recreational Area sits in Brooklyn on Jamaica Bay, and Liberty Harbor RV Park is directly across the Hudson in Jersey City.
For a beach-oriented trip on Long Island's south shore, Heckscher State Park is the main option, reached via the Throgs Neck or Whitestone Bridge and the parkway system east.
Things to do near Port Chester
Trail access is the region's main draw. Beaver Pond offers campsites for up to two tents and six persons, with select sites able to accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft, and provides convenient access to swimming beaches, hiking trails, and neighboring state park facilities, including sections of the Appalachian Trail. At Clarence Fahnestock, Canopus Lake features a sandy shore and picnic area, fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the park's four ponds targets bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental. Heckscher State Park offers Great South Bay swimming, kayaking, and paved multi-use trails along the Long Island shoreline. From Floyd Bennett Field or Liberty Harbor, campers can combine outdoor time with subway or ferry access to Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island.

Most public campgrounds in this region are seasonal. Beaver Pond opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through early May, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. The main Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, while the Group Wilderness Campground remains open, with reservations handled by the park office. In a normal year, Fahnestock sites 1 through 28 run into mid-November and sites 29 through 79 into mid-October, with showers available Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Heckscher State Park campgrounds reopen from late May through early September. Camping at Floyd Bennett Field has operated on a mid-May through mid-October window in past seasons, though recent years have seen closures, so confirm status with the National Park Service before booking. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City operates year-round.
Summer weekends fill fast, particularly at Beaver Pond and Heckscher. Fall brings cool nights and foliage in the Hudson Highlands, while winter limits options to the year-round urban RV park.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. How to book campgrounds near Port Chester
New York state park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Heckscher, are reserved through ReserveAmerica online or by call center. Campsite reservations can be made for today and up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. With Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock closed for the 2026 season, only the Group Wilderness Campground is bookable there, by calling the park office directly.
Floyd Bennett Field bookings, when the campground is operating, go through recreation.gov, and advance reservations are required. Liberty Harbor RV Park is reserved directly through the operator's website or by phone. For peak summer weekends, secure sites as far ahead as the booking window allows.
What to expect at campgrounds near Port Chester
Hookup availability varies sharply by property. Beaver Pond provides full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry facilities plus a dump station for RVs, but there are no electrical hookups available. The Fahnestock campground operates as a primitive camping area with no electric, water, or sewer hookups, and no dump station. Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field has 32 tent sites and 17 RV sites divided into five sections, without full utility hookups. Liberty Harbor offers water and electric sites, a dump station, full restrooms with hot showers, and a laundry room.
Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite. Black bears do inhabit Harriman and Bear Mountain, so hang food or carry a bear canister, and carry insect repellent for deer ticks that carry Lyme disease.

You'll need to be at least 25 years old and upload a clear photo of your license during booking, which RVezy verifies through the platform. Visiting from outside the U.S.? dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my Port Chester RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Port Chester booked through RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real peace of mind whether you are parked at a campground in the Hudson Valley or driving up I-95 toward Mystic. During booking, you choose from different protection tiers so you can pick the level of coverage that fits your trip and budget. Absolutely, and Port Chester is a great launchpad for a pet-friendly RV rental. Many local hosts welcome dogs, so use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching listings and message the host through RVezy to confirm any size limits or pet fees before booking. Once you are on the road, your pup will love Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary in Rye and the dog-friendly trails at Saxon Woods Park in White Plains. Most New York state park campgrounds allow leashed dogs at campsites. Pack a collapsible water bowl, since summer humidity along the Sound can spike quickly.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/pets/Can the RV be delivered to me in Port Chester?
Yes, RV delivery in Port Chester is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about driving a motorhome through I-95 traffic. Each listing clearly shows the mileage policy before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: map your route in advance using Google Maps, add 10 percent for detours and scenic stops, and pick the package that comfortably covers your plan. Hosts can often customize a mileage add-on if you ask.

parks.westchestergov.com/campingWhen is the best time for an RV trip from Port Chester?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for a Port Chester RV trip, with September and early October being the local insider favorite. Summer highs typically run 78 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit with humid Long Island Sound air, while fall brings 55 to 72 degree days, crisp nights, and spectacular foliage across the Hudson Valley and Litchfield Hills. Spring (April to mid-May) is quieter and cheaper, though nights can dip into the 40s, so look for an RV with a strong furnace. Winter rentals are available from select hosts for Catskills ski trips. Pro tip: target the last two weeks of September for warm days, cool nights, fewer bugs, and the start of leaf-peeping.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one out of Port Chester?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is a milestone for thousands of guests every year, and your host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, leveling, the propane system, and dumping tanks. Most Port Chester renters choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet, which drives much like a large van. To skip the tightest traffic, head north on I-684 toward the Taconic State Parkway (which prohibits commercial trucks, making for a calmer drive) rather than south through the Bronx. Pro tip: ask your host for a 30-minute practice loop around a quiet parking lot before you hit the highway.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-licenseWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never alone out there. Every RV rental in Port Chester comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in your protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing anywhere along your route. RVezy support is reachable around the clock before, during, and after your trip, and your host is just a message away for questions about how a specific system works. Even on a rainy night along the Merritt Parkway or up in the Berkshires, help is one call away. Snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number so everything is at your fingertips if you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Port Chester?
Port Chester sits at the perfect crossroads for an East Coast RV road trip from Port Chester. Top routes include Cape Cod via I-95 and the Sagamore Bridge (about 3.5 hours, 200 miles), the Hudson Valley loop up to Hyde Park and Lake George (4 hours, 220 miles), Acadia National Park in Maine via coastal Route 1 (8 hours, 450 miles), the Adirondacks and Lake Placid (5 hours, 280 miles), and the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (2.5 hours, 130 miles). Cross-border trips into Canada are allowed with many hosts (confirm via message before booking), but Mexico travel is not permitted under RVezy insurance. Avoid the George Washington Bridge in an RV and loop north via the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge instead.
dot.ny.gov/How much should I budget for fuel on a Port Chester RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to budget. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans hit 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg loaded). Gas prices in the Port Chester and Greenwich area typically run about $0.30 to $0.50 above the national average, so consider filling up just over the New York border in Connecticut or up in Putnam County where prices drop. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile trip in a Class C, plan on roughly $180 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: GasBuddy is your best friend along I-95, where prices swing wildly between exits.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Port Chester RV trip?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book Northeast campgrounds 4 to 9 months ahead, especially state parks and oceanfront sites. New York state parks like Heckscher and Wildwood release reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and they sell out within hours for July and August. Connecticut state parks use the Reserve America system too, opening 11 months out. Croton Point in Westchester is one of the most competitive bookings in the region. For shoulder season (May, September, October), 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the exact release date and have your account logged in 5 minutes before the window opens.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are the local driving conditions like around Port Chester?
Port Chester sits right on the New York and Connecticut border, so you'll be navigating some of the Northeast's busiest roadways. I-95 (the New England Thruway) gets heavy traffic, especially Fridays heading east toward Cape Cod and Sundays returning. The Hutchinson River and Merritt Parkways are scenic but ban RVs and trailers over certain heights (the Merritt has 10-foot bridge clearances and prohibits commercial vehicles entirely). Stick to I-95, I-287, and I-684 for any rig over 9 feet tall. Watch for tight tolls at the Mamaroneck and Larchmont exits. Pro tip: leave Port Chester before 7 a.m. or after 10 a.m. on weekdays to dodge the Greenwich-to-Bronx commuter crush.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Parkways.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Port Chester?
Most campgrounds within two hours of Port Chester offer the essentials and then some. Full-hookup sites (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer) are standard at private parks like Black Bear Campground and Wolf's Den. State parks like Mountain Lakes (Westchester) and Hammonasset Beach (CT) typically offer water and electric, with dump stations on-site rather than at each site. You'll find clean restrooms, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi at most private parks, camp stores, and often a pool or lake access. For freshwater fills and dump stations along your route, Camping World in Kingston and several Pilot truck stops on I-84 are reliable stops. Pro tip: arrive at your campground before 4 p.m. so you have daylight for setup.
parks.westchestergov.com/activities/campingWhat's included inside a typical Port Chester RV rental?
Port Chester RV rentals come ready to live in. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower (in Class B, C, and larger); comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig; a dining area; roof or dash air conditioning; a furnace for chilly Northeast nights; and DOT-approved seatbelts for all designated passengers. Many listings also include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and Wi-Fi hotspot. Bedding, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs are sometimes included and sometimes add-ons, so check the listing's amenities list. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm what's included and what's extra, especially if you want linens, a portable grill, or a generator for off-grid stops.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Port Chester offer popular add-ons that make life easier: linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), outdoor gear like bikes and kayaks ($15 to $40 per day), portable generators ($20 to $50 per day), and pet cleaning fees ($25 to $75) if you're bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Port Chester, Rye, or Greenwich area, or you can request delivery for a per-mile fee. Dropoff is at the same location at an agreed-upon time. Most hosts allow a 30-minute grace window. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book to lock in the price, and confirm your pickup time the day before to avoid any timing surprises.
westchestergov.com/homeHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, and your host does not receive funds until after your trip starts, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held separately from your booking payment and released after a clean return. To avoid any deposit issues, return the rig with a full fuel tank, empty wastewater tanks if required by the host, the interior tidy, and no new damage. Do a quick walkaround video with your host at both pickup and dropoff, it takes two minutes and protects everyone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Port Chester RV rental into New York City?
You can, but it is almost always smarter not to. NYC treats RVs and campervans as commercial vehicles, limiting street parking and banning them from most parkways (Hutchinson, Merritt, Saw Mill, Bronx River, and Henry Hudson). Bridge tolls are also based on axles, so an RV costs significantly more than a car. The good news: Port Chester is roughly 45 minutes by Metro-North from Grand Central, so park your RV at a campground like Croton Point and train into the city for the day. A campervan rental Port Chester travelers prefer is the most NYC-friendly option if you must drive in, since it fits standard parking spaces.
