Campgrounds and RV parks near Port Ewen, NY

The Hudson River drives most outdoor activity in the area. Boaters can launch from the Norrie Marina at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, which has a public ramp, transient slips when space allows, and a pump-out station. Hiking and cross-country skiing trails thread through the adjoining Mills-Norrie parklands, with views across the river. On the east bank, families can visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, the Vanderbilt Mansion, and the Walkway Over the Hudson. West of Port Ewen, the Catskill Mountains offer hiking, tubing on the Esopus Creek, and access to state forests. For kid-friendly stops without leaving the campground, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc runs a swimming pool, an outdoor movie theater, pedal boats, and gold panning, while Interlake RV Park & Campground has a heated pool and a game room.

The Hudson Valley has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Most private and state campgrounds in the area open around late April or early May and close by mid to late October. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park camping operates roughly from late April through mid-October, weather permitting, and Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc, New Life Campground, and Interlake RV Park & Campground follow a similar spring-to-fall window. Late May through early October is the practical camping season. Summer is peak: warm days, active river traffic, and busy weekends, particularly around Independence Day and Labor Day. Reservations for state-park sites and popular private parks fill weeks ahead for holiday weekends and can be tight for any Friday or Saturday in July and August. Fall brings cooler nights and Hudson Valley foliage, generally peaking in mid to late October. Winter is cold and snowy: campgrounds close, though some park day-use areas stay open for cross-country skiing and sledding. Spring can be wet and muddy, but early-season sites are easier to book.

Sites at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park sit in a wooded setting with tall trees and are close together, which reviewers note reduces privacy but creates a family-friendly atmosphere on busy weekends. The park has a central comfort station with showers, water spigots throughout the campground rather than on individual sites, a limited number of electric sites, and no full hookups. Private parks in the area are more amenity-heavy. Interlake RV Park & Campground offers full hookups and cabin rentals in Rhinebeck. Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc spans 160 wooded acres with 30- and 50-amp service, water and sewer, pull-through sites, and space for big rigs. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the wooded areas west of the river, and firewood movement is restricted to a 50-mile radius at New York state parks. Quiet hours at Mills-Norrie run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
