Campgrounds and RV parks near Rensselaer, NY

Rensselaer sits on the east bank of the Hudson River directly across from Albany, placing RV travelers within a short drive of both New York State Parks campgrounds and privately run family resorts. The surrounding Capital Region blends river valley terrain with the Helderberg Escarpment to the west and the Taconic and Berkshire foothills to the east, so campgrounds range from lakeside state park loops to full-hookup resorts on wooded acreage. West of the city, Thompsons Lake - Thacher State Park offers wooded and lakeside sites along the Helderberg Escarpment, with a sandy beach and access to Thacher's cliff-top overlooks and waterfall trails. To the east in the Taconic Valley, Cherry Plain State Park provides a smaller, quieter setup on Black River Pond with trailer sites, lakeside tent sites, and hike-in tent sites. For full-hookup RV travel, Alps Family Campground Inc in Averill Park and Adventure Bound Deer Run in Schaghticoke both sit within roughly a half-hour drive of Rensselaer and cater to families with pools, activity programming, and pull-through sites.

New York State Park campgrounds, including Thompsons Lake - Thacher State Park and Cherry Plain State Park, are reserved through ReserveAmerica, either online or by calling 1-800-456-2267. Sites can be booked up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Out-of-state visitors should note that non-New York residents pay an additional site fee. Proof of rabies inoculation is required at check-in for pets, and metal tags are not accepted in place of paperwork. Private resorts such as Alps Family Campground Inc and Adventure Bound Deer Run take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For peak summer weekends and holidays, book both state and private sites well in advance.
