Campgrounds near Ruby, New York
Ruby is a small hamlet in the town of Ulster, New York, sitting just north of Kingston in the Hudson Valley at the eastern edge of the Catskill foothills. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of both Catskill Park recreation to the west and Hudson River state parks to the east, making it a practical base for a multi-stop trip.
Private RV parks in the immediate area include Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc in Saugerties, a 160-acre wooded property with full-hookup sites, and Blue Mountain Campground closer to the Ulster County line. Smaller options such as New Life Campground and Camp Goat Hill sit near Ruby itself.
For state-run camping, Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park in Staatsburg is roughly a half-hour south along the Hudson. Farther west inside Catskill Park, New York State DEC campgrounds such as Woodland Valley and Kenneth L. Wilson expand the options for tent sites and small trailers.
Things to do near Ruby
The Ashokan Rail Trail, about ten miles from Ruby, runs 11.5 miles around the Ashokan Reservoir and is level enough for families and bikes. Bluestone Wild Forest, closer in, covers roughly 3,000 acres with hiking, mountain biking, and a freshwater lake for fishing. Ulster Landing County Park offers a Hudson River beach, picnic areas, and a playground.
Day trips reach quickly in several directions. Kingston's Rondout waterfront has restaurants, museums, and boat tours. Saugerties has a village lighthouse walk and a growing brewery scene. West into the Catskills, Kaaterskill Falls and the trailheads around Slide Mountain draw hikers.
On the Hudson side, the Norrie Marina offers boat launches and rentals, and Staatsburgh State Historic Site sits within the Mills-Norrie park complex.

The regional camping season runs roughly from mid-April through mid-October. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park typically operates its campground from late April through mid-October, and Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds runs a similar spring-to-fall window. Most New York State DEC campgrounds inside Catskill Park follow the same late-spring to mid-fall pattern.
Summer is peak. July and August bring the warmest weather, the busiest weekends, and the tightest availability at both private parks and state sites. Reserve well in advance for holiday weekends, especially Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. Bug pressure, from mosquitoes and ticks, is highest from late May through August.
September and early October are strong shoulder-season choices. Nights cool down, crowds thin after Labor Day, and Catskill foliage typically peaks in early to mid-October. Winter camping options are very limited in the area, as state and DEC campgrounds close and most private parks shut down for the season.

How to book a campsite near Ruby
New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds, including Margaret Lewis Norrie, Kenneth L. Wilson, and Woodland Valley, are reserved through ReserveAmerica online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. The booking window opens up to nine months ahead of arrival, and same-day reservations are accepted online until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Private campgrounds are booked directly. Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds takes reservations through its website or by phone during its operating season. Blue Mountain Campground, New Life Campground, and Camp Goat Hill also book directly with the operator.
For summer weekends, plan to book two to three months out, and earlier for full-hookup or riverfront sites.
What to expect
Terrain in the Ruby area is rolling and wooded, with narrow county roads leading to most private campgrounds. Larger rigs are accepted at parks like Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds, which offers pull-through full-hookup sites with 30 and 50-amp service, but drivers should confirm site length and approach roads when booking. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park accepts RVs but does not provide hookup facilities, and water spigots are shared throughout the campground rather than at individual sites.
Bears are present throughout the Catskill region, so food should be stored in the RV or a hard-sided container overnight. New York's firewood rule prohibits moving untreated firewood more than 50 miles, so buy locally or bring certified heat-treated wood.
Cell service is generally reliable near Kingston and Saugerties but drops off inside Catskill Park.

New York State only requires an 'R' endorsement for RVs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and virtually every rental on RVezy, including campervans, travel trailers, and Class C motorhomes, falls well below that threshold. You must be 25 or older and complete RVezy's quick ID verification during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in dates with confidence. dec.ny.gov/places-to-go/catskillCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Ruby?

Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds in Saugerties welcomes larger rigs with full hookups. For a riverfront vibe, try Saugerties/Woodstock KOA. Pro tip: New York State Parks sites at North-South Lake fill up fast for summer weekends, so consider a Tuesday-to-Thursday stay for easier availability and quieter trails.
parks.ny.gov/parks/northsouthlake/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Ruby, NY?
Honestly, Ruby is a four-season destination, but late September through mid-October is pure magic, the Catskills explode in red, orange, and gold foliage and daytime temps sit in the comfortable 55 to 70 degree range. Summer (June to August) is warm (75 to 85 degrees) and perfect for swimming holes like Big Deep in Woodstock. Late spring (May) brings wildflowers and fewer crowds. Winters are cold (often 15 to 35 degrees) with snow, and some campgrounds close, but a handful of four-season hosts on RVezy rent winterized rigs with heated tanks. Pro tip: book your foliage-season Ruby RV trip by July, those October weekends sell out first.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Ruby a good first experience?
Absolutely, first time renting an RV in Ruby, NY is easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, and dump procedure so nothing feels mysterious. If you're nervous about handling a larger rig on Catskills back roads, start with a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Ruby, NY (under 25 feet), which drives much like a big van. You can also message hosts beforehand to ask questions, and many will deliver the RV so you skip the driving entirely. Pro tip: do a short shakedown trip to Kenneth L. Wilson Campground before tackling longer routes.
dmv.ny.gov/new-driversWhat if I break down on a Catskills road trip?
Don't worry, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one phone call away whether you're on the New York State Thruway, Route 28 near Phoenicia, or a remote forest road in the Catskill Park. Coverage includes flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. You'll also have direct contact with your host, who often knows the closest trustworthy mechanic. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip for anything else. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Ruby, cell service in the deeper Catskills can be patchy, but it works at most pull-offs.
thruway.ny.gov/travelers/index.htmlCan I take my Ruby, NY RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Ruby into other states is totally doable and a guest favorite. Popular cross-state routes include Vermont's Green Mountains (2 hours northeast), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (90 minutes east), and the New Hampshire White Mountains (4 hours). Travel into Canada (Montreal is about 5 hours north) may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so just confirm with the host via message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: if you're aiming for a multi-state loop, mention your full itinerary up front, hosts appreciate the heads-up and can confirm mileage allowances accordingly.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat's fuel going to cost on a Ruby, NY RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), campervans (Class B) average 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 15 MPG combined). New York gas prices typically run about $0.20 to $0.40 above the national average, with regular unleaded in Ulster County recently around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon. For a 300-mile Ruby RV trip in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Kingston or Saugerties before heading deeper into the Catskills, prices climb at the smaller stations near Phoenicia and Margaretville.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ruby?
Book early and you'll have the pick of the best sites. New York State Park campgrounds (including North-South Lake and Kenneth L. Wilson) can be reserved up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends plus fall foliage dates typically sell out 60 to 90 days ahead. Private parks like Saugerties/Woodstock KOA and Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds usually have more last-minute availability but still recommend booking 30 days out for peak season. Pro tip: if you strike out on weekends, look at Sunday-to-Thursday arrivals, you'll find openings even mid-summer, often at lower nightly rates, and trails like Kaaterskill Falls are blissfully quieter.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the roads like around Ruby and the Catskills?
Driving in and around Ruby is very RV-friendly. The New York State Thruway (I-87) runs just east of Ruby with wide lanes and easy fuel access, while Route 28 west into the Catskills is a smooth two-lane road most rigs handle comfortably. A few notes: many Hudson Valley parkways (such as the Taconic and Palisades) prohibit commercial vehicles and have low-clearance bridges, so stick to I-87 and Route 28. Expect steeper grades climbing toward Hunter and Belleayre, and the occasional black bear crossing at dusk. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: use an RV-friendly GPS app like RV Life or CoPilot to auto-avoid restricted parkways.
dot.ny.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ruby?
You'll find a great mix. Most private campgrounds in Ulster and Greene counties (Rip Van Winkle, Saugerties/Woodstock KOA, Hidden Valley Lake) offer full hookups with 30 or 50 amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations on site. New York State Park campgrounds like Kenneth L. Wilson and North-South Lake are more rustic: expect potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, dump stations, and no individual site hookups, perfect for self-contained RVs. You can top off fresh water and dump tanks at most state campgrounds for free if you're a registered camper. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank in Kingston before heading into the higher Catskills, where some smaller campgrounds have limited fill stations.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's actually inside an RV rental in Ruby, NY?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Ruby, NY comes fully equipped: a queen or king bed, additional bunk or convertible sofa sleeping (most rigs sleep 4 to 8), full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, fresh and gray water tanks, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Many include TVs, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor awnings with lights, and onboard generators for off-grid camping. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts provide a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: filter by 'sleeps' count and amenities like generator or solar, the Catskills have plenty of off-grid spots where those features really shine.
dec.ny.gov/places-to-go/campgroundsWhat add-ons and options do Ruby, NY hosts typically offer?
Lots, and they make your trip easier. Common add-ons for RV rental in Ruby, NY include linen and kitchen kits ($25 to $75), bike racks, camping chairs and tables, generators, propane fire pits, kayak or paddleboard rentals (handy for the nearby Ashokan Reservoir), and pet packages. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night and charge $0.30 to $0.45 for additional miles. Pickup and drop-off windows are usually flexible (commonly 1 pm pickup, 11 am return), and delivery is widely offered for $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen kit for a true 'turnkey' first trip, you'll arrive to a made bed and a stocked rig.
iloveny.com/things-to-do/outdoors/How does payment and the security deposit work?
It's simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Ruby, NY, RVezy charges your card for the rental total at booking, and a refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is held separately before your trip starts. The deposit covers potential incidentals like excess mileage, late returns, or missing equipment, and it's released back to your card after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. All payments run through RVezy, never directly to a host, which keeps everything protected. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to avoid any deposit surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV camping near Ruby actually doable?
Yes, and it's an underrated adventure. While many Ulster County campgrounds close from late October through April, a growing number of RVezy hosts near Ruby rent four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and high-output furnaces, perfect for snowy escapes to Hunter Mountain or Belleayre. Look for 'winter use' in the listing or message the host directly. Year-round options nearby include Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds (seasonal hookups) and private driveways via host delivery. Daytime winter temps in the Catskills run 20 to 35 degrees, with overnight lows dipping into the teens. Pro tip: ask the host to demonstrate cold-weather tank management at pickup, and always keep shore power connected when temperatures drop overnight.
