Camping near Saint James, New York
Saint James sits on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, roughly halfway between the Long Island Sound beaches and the Great South Bay. RV renters here have access to a mix of state-park campgrounds, a barrier-island national seashore site, and mainland Connecticut parks a longer drive away.
The closest developed campground is Heckscher State Park on the south shore of Long Island, roughly a half-hour drive south. Further east, Wildwood State Park comprises 600 acres of undeveloped hardwood forest terminating on a high bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. For a car-free experience, Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island's eastern end is reached by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue.
RV renters should note that Watch Hill is tent-only; RVs stay on the mainland. Kettletown State Park in Connecticut is a longer drive north, and Totoket Valley RV Park in central Connecticut offers a private-park alternative with full hookups.
Things to do near Saint James
Beach time anchors most trips. Heckscher State Park offers bay swimming at West Beach, boat launches, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, with four miles of paved multi-use trails for hiking and biking. Wildwood State Park has two miles of Long Island Sound shoreline and roughly 12 miles of marked trails through hardwood forest.
Watch Hill borders seven miles of the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness in New York State, and has a lifeguarded ocean beach in summer. Families often combine campground time with day trips to the North Fork wineries, Fire Island ferries from Bay Shore or Sayville, and the shops and restaurants of Stony Brook village near Saint James. Fishing, birding, and cross-country skiing round out the year at the state parks.

The camping calendar on Long Island is short and busy. Heckscher State Park's campground typically opens in late May and closes in early September, and Watch Hill sites are available from roughly mid-May to mid-October. Wildwood State Park runs a longer spring-through-fall window, with camping generally available from April through Columbus Day weekend and cottages offering three-season accommodations.
Summer weekends fill quickly. Weekday stays in June and early September offer the best mix of warm weather and open sites. Wildwood's popular Fall Festival is held the first weekend of October, and shoulder-season stays reward campers with cooler nights and thinner crowds.
Winter is quiet. Long Island state parks stay open for day use, but campgrounds are closed and Fire Island ferry service is reduced. Note that Kettletown State Park Campground in Connecticut remains closed following flood damage from an August 2024 rainfall event, and will stay closed through the 2026 and 2027 seasons, so trip plans should account for that closure.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campsites near Saint James
New York state-park campgrounds use one reservation system. Reservations for Wildwood State Park, Heckscher State Park, and other New York State Parks are made through ReserveAmerica, online or by phone, and can be booked up to nine months in advance. Booking early is recommended, as sites fill quickly during summer weekends. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival.
Fire Island is a little different. Watch Hill Campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS, with sites reservable through ReserveAmerica rather than Recreation.gov. Kettletown State Park and other Connecticut state-park campgrounds use ReserveAmerica through the Connecticut state-parks portal. Totoket Valley RV Park is a private operator; book directly through their site.
What to expect at Saint James campgrounds
Sites on Long Island tend to be developed but basic. Heckscher has no electric, water, or sewer hookups; the campground provides restrooms, showers, a dump station, and picnic tables at each site. Wildwood offers a mix of tent and trailer sites with showers and dump stations, and accommodates RVs up to roughly 50 feet.
Pets are not allowed anywhere in Wildwood State Park, and dogs are barred from the campground, cottages, and picnic areas at Heckscher, so RV renters traveling with dogs need to plan carefully. Sites sit close together with limited privacy between neighbors at most Long Island state-park campgrounds.
Firewood rules are strict: untreated firewood may not be brought in from more than 50 miles away. Ticks, poison ivy, and summer mosquitoes are common; bring repellent and check for ticks after hikes.

weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before, how does pickup work in Saint James?
You're in great hands. First time renting an RV is genuinely fun on RVezy because every host provides an in-person orientation at pickup. They'll walk you through the propane, water system, dump procedure, slide-outs, generator, and dashboard before you leave the driveway, and they're a message away during your trip. Filter for Instant Book listings to lock in your dates immediately.

You're never stranded. rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Saint James RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most hosts allow interstate travel, making an RV road trip from Saint James a great way to explore the Northeast. Popular runs include Cape Cod (about 4.5 hours via the Bridgeport to Port Jefferson Ferry), the Catskills (3 hours), the Berkshires (3.5 hours), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 8 hours), and Niagara Falls (about 7 hours). Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed with host approval and confirmation of insurance coverage, so message the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the protection plan does not extend there. Confirm your route with the host and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Saint James RV trip?
Fuel budgeting is straightforward once you know the math. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New York gas prices typically run higher than the national average due to state taxes, with stations along Route 25A and the Long Island Expressway easy to reach from Saint James. For a 3-day, 200-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $80 to $110 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up west of Riverhead before heading to Montauk, prices tend to climb once you're in the Hamptons.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Saint James?
Book early and your trip falls into place. New York State Park campgrounds (Heckscher, Wildwood, Hither Hills) accept reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends at oceanfront sites like Hither Hills in Montauk sell out within hours of opening. Suffolk County parks (Smith Point, Cathedral Pines, Indian Island, Blydenburgh) book through the Suffolk County Parks system, and a Green Key card unlocks resident rates. For July and August stays, aim to book in January or February. Midweek and shoulder-season trips are far more forgiving, you can often snag a spot a week or two out.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Saint James?
Saint James itself is quiet residential roads and easy two-lane highways, no white-knuckle moments required. The trickier stretches on Long Island are the Long Island Expressway (I-495) during rush hour (avoid 7 to 9 am and 4 to 7 pm), and parkways like the Northern State and Southern State, which prohibit RVs due to low overpasses (some under 8 feet). Stick to Route 25, Route 25A, the LIE, and Sunrise Highway (Route 27) and you're good. Heading into New York City with an RV is not recommended, instead, take the LIRR or have your host deliver to your campground.
dot.ny.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Saint James?
Long Island campgrounds offer a solid range of amenities. State parks like Heckscher and Wildwood provide electric hookups (30/50-amp at many sites), potable water fill stations, dump stations, hot showers, and flush restrooms. Smith Point County Park has hookups available at designated RV sites. Cathedral Pines offers electric and water but you'll dump on exit. Most sites include picnic tables and fire rings. For dumping or filling water between trips, dump stations are available at several Suffolk County parks for paid campers. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter so you're ready for any hookup configuration.
suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/ParksWhat's typically included inside a Saint James RV rental?
You'll be living comfortably from the moment you step inside. Most motorhome rental Saint James listings come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, sleeper sofa or convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, and propane heat. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid power. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 6 with seatbelts for everyone driving. Hosts often list extras like linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor grills as add-ons. Check the listing's amenities section, and if Wi-Fi matters, message the host about hotspot options.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20James,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Saint James RV rental?
Hosts offer a wide range of add-ons to customize your trip. Common options for an RV rental in Saint James include delivery and setup (popular for first-timers), generator use, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, pet fees, and propane refills. Mileage policies vary: some listings include unlimited miles, others provide 100 to 150 free miles per day with reasonable overage rates. Pickup and dropoff times are set by each host, with flexibility often available if you ask. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a bedding kit and you'll arrive at Heckscher State Park to a fully made-up RV, ready for s'mores by sundown.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saint%20James,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure, all handled through RVezy's platform (never in cash to the host). You'll pay for your rental with a credit card when you book, including the rental fee, protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately and is released back to your card after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, complete the pre-trip walkthrough with your host, photograph existing dings, return with a similar fuel level, and empty the tanks if required. Easy in, easy out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV around Saint James?
Knowing where to park an RV in Saint James saves headaches. Overnight street parking for RVs is restricted across most Long Island towns, so plan to stay at a campground or private property with permission. Closest options: Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown (about 10 minutes), Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 20 minutes), and Cathedral Pines in Middle Island (about 30 minutes). New York State rest areas allow short stops but do not permit overnight camping. Avoid driving an RV into New York City due to parking limits and low parkway clearances. Stick to Suffolk County campgrounds and you'll have a smooth trip.
