Campgrounds near Scotchtown, New York
Scotchtown is a hamlet in the Town of Wallkill in Orange County, New York, sitting just east of Middletown in the lower Hudson Valley. Its location puts RV renters within a short drive of Catskills foothills, the Delaware River corridor, and the Appalachian Trail crossings along the New York and New Jersey border.
Private RV parks dominate the immediate area. Black Bear Campground in nearby Florida, NY sits in Orange County roughly 60 miles from Times Square, with full hook-up, 50-amp sites and year-round operation. Oakland Valley Campground sits in the woods along the Neversink River in Cuddebackville, NY, and Catskill RV Resort operates on wooded ground near Wurtsboro.
For renters willing to drive further, KOA Holiday Deerpark New York City provides a larger commercial park near Port Jervis, and Wawayanda State Park across the New Jersey line adds a state-run option with lake access. Together the group covers full-hookup RV bases and rustic state-park sites within an hour of Scotchtown.
Things to do near Scotchtown
Water is the region's main draw. Oakland Valley Campground sits along 2000 feet of the Neversink River, with wooded sites, tubing, and fishing, and campers can fish directly from riverfront sites. The Delaware River corridor west of Port Jervis adds rafting and smallmouth bass fishing.
Hiking is close at hand. A section of the Appalachian Trail passes through Wawayanda State Park, along with numerous hiking trails and lake access, and Wawayanda Mountain offers broad views over the highlands. Families with younger kids tend to stay closer to base: Black Bear Campground and Catskill RV Resort both run pools, playgrounds, and organized activities for weekend visitors.

The prime RV window runs from late spring through mid-fall. Most private and state parks in the area open in April and close by late October. Oakland Valley Campground is open from April 24 to October 15, weather permitting, and Wawayanda's campsites are open April 1 to October 31. Peak demand hits from late June through Labor Day, with a second surge for Catskills foliage.
Fall is the busiest booking window for scenery. Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for the region, with an absolute peak from late September into mid-October when Catskills foliage turns red, gold, and orange. Reserve foliage weekends several weeks out.
Winter is limited but possible for cold-weather rigs. Many private parks close in winter, but Black Bear Campground stays open year-round with heated water hookups, which is useful for de-winterizing rigs in January. Expect snow, frozen spigots at unwinterized sites, and reduced amenity hours.

How to book campgrounds near Scotchtown
Private parks in this area each use their own booking system. Black Bear Campground operates year-round and takes reservations by phone, and campers must confirm and pay for reservations in advance. Oakland Valley Campground requires a deposit at booking, with the balance due at check-in, and Catskill RV Resort also handles bookings direct.
State parks in New Jersey and New York use central portals. Online reservations for Wawayanda State Park are made at camping.nj.gov, and campsites can be booked up to 11 months in advance. New York state park and DEC campgrounds book through ReserveAmerica, while KOA Holiday Deerpark New York City reserves through the KOA site or app.
For holiday weekends and foliage dates, book eight to twelve weeks ahead. Confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and whether the site is back-in or pull-through before finalizing.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is rolling, wooded, and often uneven. Bring leveling blocks: many RV sites in this mountainous region require leveling, and reviewers note sites at Oakland Valley Campground can be difficult to back into and unlevel. Tree cover is heavy at most private parks, which helps with heat but can complicate satellite and solar.
Hookups vary widely. Black Bear Campground offers 20, 30, and 50-amp service with full hookups, sewer, water, and cable, while Wawayanda's group campsites are rustic: water is not available at the campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Cell service is generally usable but not fast.
Wildlife is active. Black bears are present across Orange and Sullivan counties, so store food and trash in the rig or in bear-resistant containers, and follow each campground's posted rules on fires and quiet hours.

Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so budgeting smart pays off. Gas prices around Scotchtown and Middletown tend to run slightly above the national average, so as a rule of thumb, budget roughly $0.35 to $0.50 per mile for a motorhome rental Scotchtown trip. For a weekend trip to Bear Mountain (about 60 miles round trip), figure $20 to $30 in fuel. Pro tip: filling up just off I-84 in Port Jervis is often a few cents cheaper than in town.

Driving an RV around Scotchtown is genuinely manageable, the area sits near the intersection of Route 17 (now I-86) and I-84, both wide highways with generous lanes and gentle grades that are RV-friendly. Heads up on two things: New York's parkways (like the Palisades and Taconic) ban commercial vehicles and most RVs, so route through interstates and US highways instead. Winter driving from December through March can bring snow and ice, especially on Catskill-bound routes like Route 17 west of Monticello. Summer thunderstorms can be intense but brief. Pro tip: use the 511NY app or website for real-time traffic and weather alerts on your route.
