Camping near Selden, New York
Selden sits in central Suffolk County on Long Island, roughly midway between the North Shore and South Shore beaches. RV renters use it as a base to reach both coasts within a 30 to 45 minute drive, plus a cluster of state parks and a national seashore campground reachable by ferry.
The closest overnight options split into two groups. On the South Shore, Heckscher State Park sits on the Great South Bay in East Islip, and Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island National Seashore is reached by the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue. On the North Shore, Wildwood State Park sits on the north shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, on a bluff over Long Island Sound in Wading River. For trips extending into Connecticut, Kettletown State Park is located in Southbury, CT and borders Lake Zoar, and Totoket Valley RV Park serves the New Haven area.
Most public campgrounds in this area are seasonal, open roughly late spring through early fall, and reservations are handled through state or federal systems rather than at the gate.
Things to do around Selden
Beach days drive most trips. Heckscher State Park sits on the Great South Bay, with opportunities for bay swimming, boat launching, sail boarding, kayaking, and canoeing, plus paved multi-use paths for walking and biking. Wildwood State Park offers 2 miles of beach on the Long Island sound for fishing and swimming, a nature trail, twelve miles of marked hiking trails, a picnic area, basketball courts, ball fields, a playground, and showers.
Fire Island is the standout day or overnight trip. Close to the beach, bay, and the Otis Pike Wilderness, the Watch Hill Campground provides a traditional camping experience on Fire Island's eastern end. The campground includes 20 sand tent sites and 8 safari tent glamping sites. Transportation to the campground is by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry, which leaves from Patchogue, NY. A visitor center, ranger programs, and a lifeguarded ocean beach round out summer visits.
Families also use Selden for museum trips, mini-golf, and easy drives to the Hamptons or the North Fork wineries.

Camping season on Long Island runs late spring through early fall. Heckscher State Park campgrounds reopen in late May and close in early September. At Wildwood State Park the park is open year-round, while the campground is open from April to October. Watch Hill Campground sites are available typically from mid-May weekend to mid-October.
Summer weekends book out early. Peak demand runs from around the Fourth of July through Labor Day, when beaches, lifeguards, and interpretive programs are all fully staffed. Shoulder-season trips in late May, June, and September trade warmer water for lighter crowds and easier reservations. Late-summer and early-fall trips should watch tropical weather advisories, as coastal Long Island falls within the Atlantic hurricane zone.
Winter camping in this area is limited. Most state park campgrounds close by mid-fall, and the Fire Island ferry service to Watch Hill winds down in mid-October. Kettletown State Park Campground is closed as a result of flooding that occurred during unprecedented heavy rainfall in August 2024. The flooding caused extensive damage to park access roads and washed out the bridge on the campground road, and the campground will remain closed for the 2026 season.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campgrounds near Selden
New York state parks use one system. At Heckscher State Park, campsite reservations can be made for today and up to 9 months in advance, and cottage reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 9 months in advance. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Wildwood State Park uses the same ReserveAmerica system on the same 9-month rolling window.
Fire Island is different. Watch Hill Campground does not offer reservations through Recreation.gov, so visitors should book through concessioner LoveFINS. Backcountry camping in the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, accessible from Watch Hill and Davis Park, requires a separate permit through Recreation.gov.
Connecticut state parks use their own ReserveAmerica portal. Private options such as Totoket Valley RV Park book directly through the campground.
What to expect on-site
Hookups vary widely between parks. The Heckscher campground accommodates tent campers and RVs, with equipment lengths ranging from about 20 to 50 feet depending on the site. Restrooms, showers, a dump station, and picnic tables are provided at each site, but hookups are limited, so RV renters should arrive with full water and empty tanks. Wildwood State Park offers 314 reservable tent and trailer campsites across five loops, open seasonally from April through October, and its defining features include proximity to a 2-mile sandy beach, wooded interior terrain, and strict quiet hours. Loop T accommodates larger rigs up to 50 feet.
Watch Hill includes 20 sand tent sites and 8 safari tent glamping sites, and transportation is by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue. There are no vehicle sites at Watch Hill, so RV renters typically park at the Patchogue ferry terminal and travel to the campground on foot.
Expect strict quiet hours, pet restrictions in beach and picnic areas, and per-vehicle fees at most state parks.

Indian Island County Park in Riverhead is open year-round at the mouth of the Peconic River, and Hither Hills State Park in Montauk is the legendary beachfront pick. parks.ny.gov/parks/wildwood/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Selden?
The sweet spot for a Selden NY RV trip is late May through mid-October, when Long Island weather is warm, sunny, and made for the beach. Summer highs sit in the low-to-mid 80s Fahrenheit with cooler ocean breezes, while May and September often bring 70s and far smaller crowds at the state parks. Fall foliage peaks in mid-to-late October and pairs beautifully with North Fork wine country trips. Winters are mild by Northeast standards but campgrounds largely close, so plan accordingly. Pro tip: the week after Labor Day is the local insider's secret, beaches are still warm, campsites open up, and Hamptons traffic finally calms down.
weather.gov/okx/climateI've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Selden a good idea for first-timers?
Yes, and first time renting an RV in Selden is easier than most people expect. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and the dump process before you leave. You can also message any host through the listing page with questions before you even book. For nervous first-timers, choose a Class B campervan or small Class C, which drive much more like a large van, and pick a host who offers delivery so you skip the drive entirely. Pro tip: start with a 2-night stay at nearby Cathedral Pines County Park, only 10 minutes from Selden, to build confidence before heading further east.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-manuals-and-practice-testsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own, even at 2 a.m. on a back road in the Pine Barrens. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows. Your host is also typically just a phone call or message away to troubleshoot anything specific to their rig, like quirks with the awning or water pump. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip as a backup. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you pull out of Selden, and snap a photo of the RV's tire size and VIN at pickup so service calls move faster if you need one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Selden RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Selden across state lines is one of the best parts of being on Long Island. You can easily drive into Connecticut via the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry, head to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or up to Vermont and Maine without any issues. Some hosts on RVezy also allow trips into Canada, but you'll need to confirm with the host before booking and bring your passport. Trips into Mexico are not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: the Port Jefferson Ferry is about 15 minutes from Selden and saves hours by skipping NYC traffic when you're headed to New England.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage and fuel budget should I plan for?
Plan realistically and your fuel budget won't surprise you. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 14 mpg, and larger Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas prices on Long Island tend to run 30 to 60 cents per gallon above the national average, so check stations in Centereach or Coram just south of Selden for the lowest prices nearby. For a typical 3-day, 250-mile loop to Montauk and back in a Class C, expect $90 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before crossing into the Hamptons, where pump prices jump noticeably in summer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Selden?
Book early and you'll lock in the best spots without stress. New York State Parks (including Wildwood and Hither Hills) open reservations 9 months ahead through Reserve America, and the most popular summer weekends sell out within minutes of release. Suffolk County parks like Cathedral Pines, Indian Island, and Cedar Point use the Suffolk County Parks reservation system and also open months in advance. For July and August, aim to book by February or March. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) often have last-minute openings even in peak season, so if you're flexible on dates, you can score a beachfront site at Hither Hills with just a week's notice.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Selden and Long Island?
Driving an RV around Selden is very manageable as long as you plan around traffic. Route 347 and Route 25 (Middle Country Road) are your main local arteries and handle RVs comfortably. The Long Island Expressway (I-495) is the fastest east-west route but jams up badly Friday afternoons heading east and Sunday evenings heading west, especially in summer. Avoid the parkways (Northern State, Southern State, Sunrise Highway west of exit 44, Ocean Parkway), where commercial vehicles and most RVs are prohibited due to low bridges, some as low as 7 to 8 feet. Pro tip: leave Selden by 7 a.m. on summer Fridays heading east, or wait until after 8 p.m. to dodge the worst of the Hamptons rush.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/systems-optimization-section/ny-moves/parkwaysWhat hookups, dump stations, and water fill spots can I expect at campgrounds near Selden?
Long Island campgrounds offer a solid range of amenities. Wildwood State Park has electric hookups at many sites plus a centralized dump station and potable water fill. Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at most sites, which is rare in this area. Indian Island County Park has electric and water, with a dump station on-site. Hither Hills offers no hookups but has restrooms, showers, and a dump station. For mid-trip dumps, the Brookhaven Town facility and several private campgrounds in Middle Island accept day-use dumping for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground, hose bibs are inconsistent at beach day-use areas.
suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/ParksWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Selden?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. Most motorhome rental Selden options include a queen or full bed, a convertible dinette or sofa that sleeps 2 more, a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, plus heating and air conditioning. Class A and Class C rigs typically sleep 4 to 7, while a campervan rental Selden (Class B) usually sleeps 2 to 3 and is easier to park. Many include a generator, TV, and sometimes Wi-Fi or a cell booster. Seatbelts are provided for travel, and listings clearly show how many. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list for an outdoor shower, a game-changer after a Robert Moses State Park beach day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Selden,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and mileage usually work?
Hosts in Selden offer all kinds of add-ons to tailor your trip: bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), camping chairs and tables, bikes, kayaks, generators, propane refills, and outdoor grills. Pickup typically happens at the host's home in Selden or surrounding Suffolk County towns, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough before you head out. Mileage policies vary, some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day with $0.30 to $0.50 per extra mile, while others offer unlimited mileage packages. Pro tip: if you're planning a Montauk-and-back trip (about 140 miles round-trip), ask the host upfront about a flat-rate mileage add-on, it's often cheaper than per-mile overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Selden,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you'll never hand cash to a host. You pay your booking total by credit or debit card when you reserve, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup. The deposit, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV, is released back to you after the trip assuming no damage or policy issues. Documenting the RV with photos and video at pickup and dropoff is the easiest way to keep things smooth. Pro tip: review the host's mileage, generator-hour, and cleaning policies before you confirm so there are no surprises at the end of your Long Island trip.
