Campgrounds and RV parks near Staatsburg, NY

The Hudson River is the main draw. At Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, the Norrie Marina offers a boat launch and slip rentals, and trails thread through the grounds of both Mills and Norrie for walking, jogging, cycling, and birdwatching along wooded bluffs. Two nine-hole golf courses sit within the park boundaries, and their grounds are open for cross-country skiers in winter. Off-park attractions cluster nearby. The Staatsburgh State Historic Site, the Vanderbilt and FDR sites in Hyde Park, and the shops and restaurants of Rhinebeck are all within a short drive. Families often combine a camping stay with a day on the Walkway Over the Hudson pedestrian bridge in Poughkeepsie.

The main camping season runs from spring through mid-fall. Mills Norrie's campground typically operates from late April through mid-October, with the shoulder months offering cooler nights and thinner crowds. The park itself is open year-round, sunrise to sunset, but winter camping is not offered and many facilities close for the season. Summer is peak. July and August bring warm, humid days, active weekends at the marina, and the fullest campground bookings. Weekdays empty out considerably compared to weekends, which is worth planning around for RV renters who want quieter sites. During spring and fall migration, songbirds can be found in abundance along the forest banks of the Hudson River, with 29 of the 75 Neotropical migratory songbird species that breed in New York observed within the Mills-Norrie-Staatsburgh Bird Conservation Area. Winter turns the park into a destination for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding on the Mills estate lawn, but campers should plan to lodge indoors or at year-round private parks if visiting between November and March.

At Mills Norrie, sites sit in a wooded setting with tall tree cover and a central comfort station with showers serving both cabins and campsites. There are a limited number of electric sites in the campground, and water spigots are located throughout the campground rather than on individual sites; the park does not offer full RV hookups. The marina houses showers and a pump-out station, and firewood may be moved to the campground only from within a 50-mile radius. Sites can feel close together on busy weekends, which suits families but reduces privacy. Quiet hours run from 10 PM to 7 AM, and firearms and other weapons are prohibited. A maximum of two pets are allowed in campsites, must be crated or on a leash no more than six feet in length, and proof of rabies inoculation must be produced if requested by staff. Private parks in the area generally offer full hookups and other amenities that state sites do not.
