Campgrounds near Stony Point
Stony Point sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in Rockland County, roughly 40 miles north of New York City. The surrounding region is dense with public land, giving RV renters access to Harriman State Park, Bear Mountain, Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park, and the Hudson Highlands within a short drive.
The closest option is Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, which adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area. Select sites accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet, though there are no electrical hookups. North across the Bear Mountain Bridge, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park is the primary campground for that 14,000-acre park, but it is closed for the 2026 season to allow construction of a new bathhouse, so travelers should confirm status before booking.
For full-hookup RV camping, Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY and the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday are the main options within about 30 to 45 minutes. Camp Wyanokie, on the New Jersey side near Norvin Green State Forest, is rustic and geared to tent camping, so it is not suited to RV rentals.
Things to do near Stony Point
Hiking dominates the area. Harriman State Park alone has more than 200 miles of trails maintained by volunteers from the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, including sections of the Appalachian Trail, and Clarence Fahnestock adds another 50 miles of forest and ridge routes. Bear Mountain and the Hudson Highlands provide steeper climbs with river views.
Swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Canopus Lake operate seasonally, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rent on Canopus and Pelton Ponds. Fishing is strong for bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked brook and rainbow trout, with a New York State freshwater license required.
Off-trail, families can visit Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, tour West Point, or drive north to Hudson Valley wineries and farm stands. Fahnestock Winter Park offers groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails in winter.

New York State Park campgrounds in this area follow a seasonal calendar. Beaver Pond at Harriman typically runs from spring through mid-October, with reservations available up to nine months in advance through the ReserveAmerica portal. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, so RV renters should verify current status on the New York State Parks website before planning any trip that depends on that campground.
Private parks fill the shoulder and winter gaps. Black Bear RV Park operates year-round with full hookups and heated water connections, and the Newburgh KOA runs a long warm-weather season with its pool and outdoor amenities open in summer.
Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends fill fastest. Bear Mountain and Harriman are within an hour of New York City, so Friday-to-Sunday bookings should be locked in as early as possible. Winter brings snow, ice, and limited state-park camping; most public sites are closed and cold-weather gear becomes a real consideration.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York State Park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond, are reserved through the ReserveAmerica portal or by calling 1-800-456-2267. The booking window opens up to nine months in advance, with new dates releasing at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day. Same-day campsite reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival.
Black Bear RV Park takes reservations by phone and through Campspot; the park operates year-round and is RV-only, with no tent sites. The New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA website and offers pull-through, back-in, and cabin options.
Camp Wyanokie is a rustic, tent-focused site near Norvin Green State Forest and does not accommodate RVs, so it is not a fit for a motorhome rental.
What to expect on-site
State-park campgrounds in this region are more primitive than most RV renters expect. Beaver Pond has picnic tables, fire rings with flip-top grills, shared full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical, water, or sewer hookups at sites, and trailers or RVs are capped at 30 feet. Pets and alcohol are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and only one vehicle is allowed per site.
Black Bear RV Park and the Newburgh KOA offer the full-hookup experience with 20, 30, and 50 amp service, water, and sewer, plus Wi-Fi, a pool, and playgrounds. Black Bear accommodates rigs up to 75 feet and keeps water hookups heated for winter stays.
Black bears live throughout Harriman and Bear Mountain, so food should be stored securely, and deer ticks are common in warm months. Cell service is reliable at the private parks and spotty inside the state parks.
