Camping near Suffern, New York
Suffern sits in Rockland County at the base of the Ramapo Mountains, roughly 25 miles from the George Washington Bridge and directly adjacent to Harriman State Park. The location gives RV renters quick access to the Lower Hudson Valley's largest concentration of public campgrounds while remaining within a short drive of Manhattan.
Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park and is a common destination for campers coming out of the New York City area. The campground has no hookups and is best suited to tent campers, but it can accommodate smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans up to 30 feet long. Camp Wyanokie and Wawayanda State Park lie a short drive south into the New Jersey Highlands, both offering rustic sites near hiking trails and lakes.
For RV renters who need full hookups, Black Bear Campground in Orange County and Liberty Harbor RV Park on the Jersey City waterfront provide two very different bases: one wooded and quiet, the other an urban staging area within sight of the Manhattan skyline.
Things to do around Suffern
Harriman State Park contains more than 200 miles of trails ranging from easy to strenuous, 31 lakes, two beaches, and activities including swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati are the main swim beaches within the park. Bear Mountain State Park, just north, adds a zoo, a summit drive, and Appalachian Trail access.
Across the state line, Wawayanda State Park has over 60 miles of well-marked trails plus a 19.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail, with boat rentals and a swim beach on Lake Wawayanda from Memorial Day to Labor Day when lifeguards are on duty.
For city-focused trips, Liberty Harbor RV Park puts riders within walking distance of the PATH train and the ferry to Wall Street, making day trips into Manhattan practical without moving the rig.

Public campground seasons in this area follow a spring-to-fall pattern. Wawayanda State Park's group campsites are open April 1 to October 31, and Beaver Pond typically operates from spring through late fall. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with weekends filling first at Harriman due to proximity to New York City.
Spring and summer are the busiest seasons and the best times for paddling and swimming at Lake Welch and Lake Wawayanda. Fall brings cooler nights, strong foliage color across the Ramapo and Wawayanda ridges, and lighter crowds midweek. Ticks and mosquitoes are most active from May through July, so plan for repellent and tick checks.
Winter narrows the options. Black Bear Campground in Orange County operates year-round with full hookups, and Liberty Harbor RV Park also stays open through the winter months. State park campgrounds close, but the parks themselves remain open for day use, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing when snow allows.

How to book campgrounds near Suffern
New York State Parks campgrounds, including Beaver Pond at Harriman, are booked through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, and bookings can be secured online or by phone. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible.
New Jersey state parks including Wawayanda use the state's own system. Wawayanda offers group sites with a seven-person minimum, and online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov.
Private parks are booked directly. Black Bear Campground currently accepts reservations by phone, and Liberty Harbor RV Park takes bookings online or by phone. Given limited RV capacity near New York City, both should be reserved well ahead for peak summer weekends.
What to expect at Suffern campgrounds

Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with flip-top grill, and shared full-service bathrooms are centrally located. There are no electrical hookups for trailers, alcohol is not permitted, and pets are not allowed.
Black bear activity is common in the region, so campers should follow posted food-storage rules at Harriman and in the New Jersey Highlands.
Black Bear Campground has full hookup sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, back-in and pull-thru options, is family and pet friendly, and does not allow tent camping. Liberty Harbor is urban camping: paved sites, water and electric hookups, tight spacing, and city noise in exchange for direct transit access to Manhattan.
