The core camping season in the Hudson Valley runs from mid spring through mid fall. Beaver Pond at Harriman typically opens in early May and closes in mid October, and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock follows a similar spring-to-fall window. Reservations for New York State Park campgrounds open on a rolling nine-month window through ReserveAmerica, and weekend sites at both parks fill quickly during peak weeks.
Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm humid days and the lake beaches fully staffed. July and August weekends typically sell out weeks in advance, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are the tightest. Fall brings peak Hudson Valley foliage in mid to late October, cool nights, and lighter crowds midweek.
Winter closes most public campgrounds in the region. Fahnestock still operates a winter park with groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, a sledding hill, and a warming lodge, but overnight RV camping in the state park system is not available in the cold months. Liberty Harbor RV Park stays open year round.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds near Thornwood
New York State Park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond at Harriman and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock, are reserved through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made online or by calling 1-800-456-2267. If the date is less than 14 days out, campers must call the facility directly for availability. Sites become available on a rolling nine-month window, so summer weekends should be booked as early as possible.
Floyd Bennett Field, operated by the National Park Service as part of Gateway National Recreation Area, uses Recreation.gov for permits. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Sylvan Lake Beach Park book directly through their own websites and phone lines.
Pet policies vary by park. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, while most other New York State Park campgrounds allow a maximum of two pets per site with proof of rabies inoculation.
What to expect at Hudson Valley campgrounds
Public campgrounds in this area lean rustic. Beaver Pond has comfort stations with showers, laundry facilities, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups at any site. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill. Beaver Pond accepts trailers and RVs up to 30 feet, and alcohol is not permitted on the grounds. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock offers restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, with hookup availability varying by loop.
Site privacy varies considerably, and quiet hours run from 10 PM to 7 AM. Liberty Harbor is a paved urban lot with full hookups and transit access, not a wooded experience. Sylvan Lake sits between the two extremes with a family beach-park atmosphere. Cell service is reliable across most of Westchester and Putnam counties but spotty inside Harriman.
