Camping near Tillson, New York
Tillson is a hamlet in Ulster County in New York's Hudson Valley, sitting between the Hudson River to the east and the Shawangunk Ridge to the west. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of Hudson River state parks, Catskills trailheads, and the wineries and farm stands of the mid-Hudson region. New Paltz, Kingston, and Poughkeepsie are all within easy reach for supplies, dining, and attractions.
Campground options near Tillson range from a state-run park to family-oriented private resorts. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park encompasses a forested campground along the Hudson River with tent sites, a small number of electric sites, platform sites, and cabins, though the park does not offer full hookup facilities for RVs. Private parks such as So-Hi Campgrounds, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River, and Rondout Valley RV Campground add full-hookup sites, pools, and family programming.
For travelers arriving from the south, the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday sits along the I-84 corridor and works well as a first or last stop on a longer Hudson Valley itinerary.
Things to do near Tillson
The Hudson River and the Shawangunk and Catskill ranges shape most trip planning. At Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, activities include hiking, picnicking on bluffs above the Hudson, two nine-hole golf courses, and a marina with a boat launch, kayak launch, and pump-out station. In winter, the golf course grounds are open for cross-country skiing.
West of Tillson, Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Mohonk Preserve on the Shawangunk Ridge offer well-marked hiking, cliffside carriage roads, and swimming at Lake Minnewaska and Lake Awosting in summer. The Hudson Valley Rail Trail and the Walkway Over the Hudson connect on foot and by bike, and are popular with families staying at nearby campgrounds.
Rainy-day options include the town of New Paltz, farm stands and cideries around Accord and Kerhonkson, and museums in Kingston and Beacon.

The Hudson Valley has four distinct seasons, and most campgrounds near Tillson operate only from spring through mid-fall. Rondout Valley RV Campground runs seasonally from mid-April through the end of October, and the campground at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park runs from late April through mid-October, with exact opening and closing dates set each year by New York State Parks.
Summer, from late June through August, is peak season. Sites at popular parks book out weeks in advance for weekends and holidays, so early reservations are essential. Daytime highs sit in the low 80s Fahrenheit, and afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually short.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights and thinner crowds. May wildflowers and October foliage are the draws, and leaf-peeping weekends in the first half of October fill campgrounds quickly. Winter camping options are very limited, and most private RV parks in the area are closed.

How to book campgrounds near Tillson
State park sites use the New York State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Campsites can be reserved up to nine months in advance, same-day reservations are allowed until 3:00 PM on the arrival date, and walk-ins are permitted subject to availability after 3:00 PM. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center, which is useful for locking in summer weekends at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park.
Private campgrounds each run their own booking. So-Hi Campgrounds, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River, Rondout Valley RV Campground, and the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday all take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Thousand Trails members can book Rondout Valley through their membership, while non-members reserve as regular guests.
For holiday weekends, book several months out and confirm site length and hookup type before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Tillson tend to be wooded, with tree cover and uneven ground more common than open, level pads. At Mills Norrie, recreational vehicles are welcome but the park does not offer hook-up facilities, there are a limited number of electric sites, water spigots are located throughout the campground rather than on individual sites, and there is a central comfort station with showers and toilets. Plan to arrive with full fresh water and empty holding tanks.
Private parks in the area offer more RV-friendly infrastructure. Rondout Valley RV Campground provides full and partial hookups, laundry, a pool, and playgrounds, and other nearby private parks similarly cater to larger rigs, though back-country roads leading to some properties can be narrow and hilly.
Cell coverage is patchy once campgrounds sit against the ridge. Bring bug spray for evenings, and check firewood rules, since New York restricts moving untreated firewood more than 50 miles.
