Campgrounds near Troy, New York
Troy sits on the east bank of the Hudson River in Rensselaer County, just northeast of Albany in New York's Capital District. RV renters use the city as a base for the Taconic Valley, the Berkshires just across the Massachusetts line, and the southern Green Mountains of Vermont. Most campgrounds within an easy drive fall into two groups: private RV parks with full hookups, and one small state-park campground east of the city.
Adventure Bound Deer Run (also listed as Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Deer Run), Alps Family Campground Inc, and Broken Wheel Campground are private operations that typically accept RVs and handle their own reservations directly. Cherry Plain State Park sits in the Taconic Valley of Rensselaer County, a 175-acre park along Black River Pond with a sandy beach and a boat launch.
The surrounding terrain is rolling forest and small ponds rather than dramatic backcountry, which keeps sites accessible for larger rigs and family trailers.
Things to do around Troy
Water recreation drives most trips. Cherry Plain State Park has 10 trailer sites, 10 lakeside tent sites, and 10 hike-in tent sites, with rowboats and paddle boats available for rental on Black River Pond. Anglers fish for bass, bullheads, and pickerel in the pond, and the sandy beach is a straightforward swim stop for kids, though there is no guarded swimming at this location.
Day trips from any Troy-area campground reach Grafton Lakes State Park, which has multiple ponds and a large sandy beach on Long Pond, plus miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Downtown Troy adds a walkable rainy-day option with Victorian architecture, riverfront paths, and the Troy Farmers Market on Saturdays. Mount Greylock and Pittsfield State Forest lie roughly a half hour east for a longer hike.

The camping window is short. Cherry Plain State Park operates from Memorial Day weekend through the last weekend in June on Fridays and weekends only, then daily from the last weekend in June through Labor Day. Private parks around Troy generally follow a similar May-to-October pattern, with hookups shut off once overnight temperatures drop below freezing.
Summer is peak season. July is typically the warmest month and also the wettest, so plan for afternoon thunderstorms. Snow usually begins around November and ends by April, with the Capital District averaging about 56 inches per year, which is why most campgrounds close for the winter. Ticks can be a concern in wooded areas of eastern New York, so visitors should take precautions from spring through fall.
Deer and small game hunting are allowed in season at Cherry Plain, with park hunting permit dates running September 1 to August 31, so shoulder-season campers should check posted areas.

The trailer was exactly as pictured. Brandon was a pleasure to deal with , had everything ready for pickup and did a great job giving us setup and use instructions. I would definitely recommend and rent this Rockwood A frame trailer again .

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

How to book
State-park sites and private campgrounds use different systems. For Cherry Plain State Park, reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, either online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Adventure Bound Deer Run, Alps Family Campground Inc, and Broken Wheel Campground handle their own bookings, so contact each park directly for availability, rig-size limits, and hookup type. Summer weekends fill first, especially around holidays, so lock in dates as soon as the 9-month window opens for state parks.
Proof of rabies vaccination is required for pets, with a maximum of two per site and a leash no longer than 6 feet.
What to expect
Cherry Plain is a small, quiet campground rather than a resort. The 30-site campground includes 10 trailer sites, 10 lakeside tent sites, and 10 hike-in tent sites, with showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Hike-in sites require parking in a nearby lot and walking gear to the site. There is no full-hookup infrastructure at the state park, so RV renters should arrive with fresh water and empty tanks.
The park sits in Rensselaer County, roughly a 40-minute drive east of downtown Troy, off NYS Route 22 between Grafton and Stephentown. There is no guarded swimming at this location, so parents should plan accordingly.
Private parks near Troy generally offer water, electric, and sewer hookups, and are the better fit for larger Class A and Class C rentals.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Troy%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Troy, NY?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Troy, NY, even for larger Class A motorhomes. New York does not require a special RV license or commercial driver's license for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds. To book on RVezy, the primary driver must generally be 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit from your home auto association along with your home license. Most first-time renters are approved quickly, often the same day they book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Troy protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Troy, NY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Northway with peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (hosts do not set this). Roadside assistance is included at no extra cost, covering flat tires, lockouts, and battery jumps anywhere from downtown Troy to the Adirondacks. Take photos at pickup and dropoff with your host: a simple habit that keeps the protection process smooth if any small issue comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Troy RV rental?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your Troy RV trip. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can change your mind without penalty. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy will help refund or rebook your trip. You'll see the full policy details during checkout and inside your RVezy account. Book early to secure the best rigs for Saratoga race season, then relax knowing you have flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Troy RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Troy, NY, so your pup can join the adventure. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when you search to find RVs where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Many hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is shown clearly in the listing. Troy and the Capital Region are great for dogs: Prospect Park in Troy has wide walking paths with Hudson Valley views, and leashed dogs are allowed at Grafton Lakes State Park just 20 minutes east. Schodack Island State Park, about 25 minutes south, also welcomes leashed pets on its riverside trails. Message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed; it speeds up approval.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/Can the RV be delivered to me in Troy?
Yes, RV delivery in Troy is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially for first-time RVers. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV to your driveway, a local campground like Schodack Island State Park, or even up to Lake George, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see delivery radius and per-mile fees right in the listing. This is a game-changer for first time renting an RV because you skip the parking lot pickup and city driving. Ask your host to deliver the day before your campground check-in time so you have an unhurried orientation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Troy%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive my RV rental from Troy?
You've got incredible range from Troy, and many hosts offer generous mileage packages (some even include RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer trips). Popular drives include Saratoga Springs at about 35 miles, Lake George at about 55 miles north (roughly an hour), the Berkshires in Massachusetts at about 45 miles east, Vermont's Green Mountains at about 60 miles, and Lake Placid in the Adirondack High Peaks at about 140 miles. Each listing clearly shows daily mileage included and the per-mile rate for anything extra, so there are no surprises. If you're planning an RV road trip from Troy up to the Adirondacks, ask the host upfront about a mileage bundle. They'll often discount it for trips of 4+ nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Troy%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Troy, NY?
You're spoiled for choice with great RV camping near Troy. Schodack Island State Park, about 15 miles south along the Hudson, has electric hookups and quiet, wooded sites. Cherry Plain State Park, about 25 miles east in the Taconics, offers lakefront camping with a swim beach. Thompsons Lake Campground in the Helderbergs (about 30 minutes west) is a family favorite. For a bigger resort vibe, head about 50 minutes north to Lake George Escape or the Lake George/Saratoga KOA, both with full hookups and pools. New York State Park sites open reservations up to 9 months ahead through ReserveAmerica, especially for summer weekends, so reserve early.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Troy?
The sweet spot for a Troy RV trip is mid-May through mid-October, when daytime highs typically sit between 70F and 85F and nearly every campground in the Capital Region is open. July is the warmest month (averaging around 82F highs), perfect for swimming at Grafton Lakes or kayaking the Hudson. The local secret is late September into early October, when the Taconic and Adirondack foliage turns brilliant reds and golds, crowds thin out, and rental prices often drop. Winters bring significant snowfall and freezing nights, so most campgrounds close by late October. Book your fall foliage rig by mid-August: leaf-peeper demand spikes fast in upstate New York.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before, is renting in Troy a good idea?
Troy is a great place for a first time renting an RV. Traffic is light compared to NYC or Boston, the highways (I-87 and I-90) are wide and well-marked, and your host will give you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, generator, slide-outs, and the dump process. Many Troy-area hosts also offer delivery so you can skip city driving entirely and start your trip already parked at the campground. To ease in, pick a smaller Class B campervan or a 24-foot Class C motorhome. Spend your first night at Schodack Island State Park, just 20 minutes away, to practice setup before heading deeper into the Adirondacks.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Troy%2C%20New%20YorkWhat if I break down or have a problem on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Troy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, towing, battery jumps, and fuel delivery anywhere in New York and beyond. One quick call connects you with help, whether you're stuck along the Northway near Lake George or off Route 7 heading into Vermont. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for questions about quirks of their specific RV, like which switch runs the water pump. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside assistance number to your phone before pickup so it's ready if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Troy RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, cross-border and interstate travel is allowed on many Troy RV rentals, and the Canadian border is only about 3 hours north via I-87. Travel into Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the rest of the Northeast is generally straightforward, just confirm with your host when you book, since some hosts cap travel to certain regions. For Canada trips, let your host know in advance so they can confirm insurance and protection coverage extends across the border. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. A classic 7-day loop from Troy hits Lake George, Montreal, the Eastern Townships, and back through Vermont, and it's stunning in late September.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on my Troy RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on an RV trip, but it's easy to budget. Gas prices in the Troy area typically run close to the New York state average, with diesel a bit higher. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A rigs sit around 7 to 10 MPG. A typical 4-night loop from Troy to Lake George and back (around 250 miles) might use $80 to $150 in fuel for a Class C. The cheapest gas in the Capital Region is usually along Route 7 in Latham or at the Costco in Glenmont, both about 15 minutes from Troy, so top off before heading north toward the Adirondacks where prices climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Troy?
For the best sites, book early, especially in summer. New York State Park campgrounds like Schodack Island, Cherry Plain, and Thompsons Lake open reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and July/August weekends sell out fast. Private parks like Lake George Escape or the Lake George/Saratoga KOA take bookings up to a year out and fill up around Memorial Day, July 4th, and the Saratoga race meet (mid-July through Labor Day). Shoulder season (May, June, September) is far easier and often available a week or two ahead. If your dates are flexible, search Sunday-through-Thursday arrivals; you'll find availability even at popular Adirondack parks when weekends are booked solid.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Troy?
Driving an RV around Troy is very manageable. The main highways (I-87 Northway, I-90, and Route 7) are wide, well-maintained, and easy to navigate with a big rig. Downtown Troy has some narrow, historic streets and a few low railroad bridges, so stick to main arteries like Hoosick Street with larger motorhomes (host delivery solves this entirely). Heading into the Adirondacks, watch for steep grades on Route 9N near Lake George and winding sections on Route 73 toward Lake Placid. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March. Download the 511NY app for real-time New York traffic, construction, and weather alerts before any motorhome rental Troy adventure.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Troy?
Capital Region campgrounds are well-equipped. Most private parks like Lake George Escape and the Saratoga/Lake George KOA offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), WiFi, hot showers, laundry, and on-site dump stations. New York State Parks like Schodack Island and Cherry Plain typically offer electric and water at many sites, with shared dump stations and clean comfort stations, though full sewer hookups are less common. Need to dump or fill water between stops? Many travel plazas south of Troy offer public dump stations and potable water. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a 30-to-50-amp adapter, and a sewer hose support: three things first-time campers most often forget on their first Troy RV trip.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's actually inside a typical Troy RV rental?
You'll be impressed at how well-equipped a campervan rental Troy or motorhome rental Troy actually is. Most rigs sleep 4 to 8 people, with real beds, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both furnace and AC (a must for warm July afternoons and chilly Adirondack nights), and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include a TV, generator, awning, and outdoor speakers, while Class B campervans are more compact but easier to drive. Listings show exactly what's included plus photos of every space. Filter by Sleeps and check the bed configuration carefully if you're planning a family RV trip Troy: fold-out dinettes vary in comfort.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Troy%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts offer useful add-ons to customize your rent an RV in Troy experience: camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, generators, propane fill-ups, and even Starlink WiFi on some rigs. Pickup is usually at the host's location around Troy, Watervliet, Cohoes, or Latham, though delivery to your campground is often available for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by host: many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles at a set per-mile rate, and weekly trips often come with unlimited miles. Bundle add-ons when you book. Hosts often offer a better rate when you grab linens, camp chairs, and a kitchen kit together.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Troy%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay for your booking online with a credit or debit card when you reserve, and the platform handles everything (no cash or e-transfers with the host). Most hosts also require a refundable security deposit, which is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after dropoff once the host confirms the RV is returned clean, on time, and undamaged. Do a quick walkaround video with your host at both pickup and dropoff and refill propane and fuel to the same level you received them. That's the single best way to avoid security deposit issues on your RV rental New York trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Troy during winter for a snowy getaway?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Troy are available, and they're a special kind of adventure. Some hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, extra insulation, and reliable furnaces, which are essential for the Capital Region's January lows often around 15F and snowy stretches into March. Most campgrounds close by late October, but a handful of private parks near Lake George and the Catskills stay open year-round with electric hookups for shore power. Many winter renters skip campgrounds entirely and park at family driveways or near ski areas like Gore Mountain, Whiteface, or Jiminy Peak (with permission). Confirm with your host that the RV is winter-ready (heated underbelly, propane topped off), and plan to stay plugged into shore power overnight to keep tanks from freezing.
