Camping near Valhalla, New York
Valhalla sits in central Westchester County, roughly 25 miles north of Manhattan and within an hour's drive of several public and private campgrounds. The town itself has no campground, but it works well as a base for RV travelers heading into the Lower Hudson Valley, the Hudson Highlands, and the New York City metro coastline.
The closest developed public options sit west across the Hudson in Rockland County and north in Putnam County. Beaver Pond Campground is situated within the 46,000-acre Harriman State Park in Rockland County, directly adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, with 125 campsites and select sites able to accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet in length. To the north, Clarence Fahnestock State Park covers more than 14,000 acres of forest and recreational facilities in the Hudson Highlands of Putnam and Dutchess counties, about one hour's drive north of New York City, with the campground located at Pelton Pond.
For RV travelers who want to stay closer to the city, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City and Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn offer urban-adjacent options. Sylvan Lake Beach Park in Dutchess County rounds out the private-park choices to the north.
Things to do near Valhalla
Hiking dominates the region. Harriman State Park has an extensive network of trails plus lakes and beaches, with lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, and boating. A portion of the Appalachian Trail runs through both Harriman and Fahnestock, making point-to-point day hikes possible from either base camp.
Water recreation is central to Fahnestock. Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the jewel of the park, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is excellent in all seasons for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout, with rowboats and kayaks available for rental.
From Liberty Harbor RV Park or Floyd Bennett Field, campers can reach Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty ferry terminals, and Brooklyn beaches by transit or a short drive, blending urban sightseeing with an RV trip.

The New York State Parks camping season is short. Beaver Pond opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only for about two weeks, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. The Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, with the campground having closed on September 2, 2025 for that work. The Group Wilderness Campground at Fahnestock remains open for the 2026 season and is booked by calling the park office.
Summer weekends fill fast. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings foliage traffic through October, and shoulder-season midweek stays offer the quietest experience.
Winter camping is not offered at the state park campgrounds in the immediate area. Fahnestock Winter Park stays active with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding on groomed trails, but tent and RV camping at the state parks is not available in the coldest months. Urban and private parks near the coast may operate year-round.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York State Park sites are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites only.
Reservations can also be made by phone through the ReserveAmerica call center at 1-800-456-2267. For Fahnestock's Group Wilderness Campground during the bathhouse construction period, reservations go through the park office directly at 845-225-7207.
Private parks such as Liberty Harbor RV Park and Sylvan Lake Beach Park book through their own websites, and Floyd Bennett Field camping is managed by the National Park Service. Peak-summer weekends and any holiday weekend should be locked in months ahead.
What to expect on site
The state park campgrounds in this region are rustic. Beaver Pond provides full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry facilities plus a dump station for RVs, but there are no electrical hookups available. Fahnestock has no hookups or dump station at the park. RV travelers should arrive with full fresh water and empty holding tanks, and plan for generator or battery use within posted quiet hours. At Beaver Pond, generators may only be used from 8AM to 10AM and from 7PM to 9PM.
Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite. Fahnestock allows leashed pets under standard state park rules. Campers should be cautious of local wildlife, including raccoons and black bears, so proper food storage and disposal are essential.
Liberty Harbor RV Park and Floyd Bennett Field offer a very different experience: paved or graded sites, city skyline views, and easier access to services, but far less green space.
