Campgrounds near Verplanck, New York
Verplanck sits on the east bank of the Hudson River in northern Westchester County, roughly an hour north of New York City. The hamlet is within easy driving range of two large state-park camping systems, Harriman State Park to the southwest across the Bear Mountain Bridge and Clarence Fahnestock State Park to the north in Putnam County. Both parks are operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and are booked through Reserve America.
RV renters have a mix of options within about a 30-mile radius. Beaver Pond Campground sits within the 46,000-acre Harriman State Park in Rockland County, directly adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, with 125 campsites and select sites able to accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet in length. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park runs along the western shore of the pond with 75 campsites available for reservation.
Private options in the area include New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday across the river in Orange County, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc in Dutchess County, and Black Bear Campground further west. Together these serve travelers looking for full hookups closer to the Hudson corridor.
Things to do near Verplanck
The Hudson Highlands are the main draw. Harriman State Park offers more than 200 miles of trails that range from easy to strenuous, 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. Lake Welch, next to Beaver Pond Campground, has a protected swimming beach when lifeguards are on duty.
At Clarence Fahnestock, families can hike the short Pelton Pond loop or take on a section of the Appalachian Trail. The park has abundant opportunities for boating, hunting, fishing, and birding across two lakes and four ponds. Canopus Lake features a sandy shore with a picnic area, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental during the summer season.
Off the trails, day trips include Bear Mountain State Park, the Hudson River waterfront at Peekskill, and Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site.

The state-park camping season in this region is limited to warm-weather months. Beaver Pond in Harriman typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through early May, with the regular reservable season running from early May through mid-October. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock typically operates from mid-May through early November and accepts RVs up to 40 feet with 75 sites available. Travelers should confirm current Fahnestock campground status directly with the park, as scheduled facility work has affected recent seasons.
Spring brings variable weather and blackfly season in the highlands, but trails are quiet and wildflowers bloom. Summer is peak: warm, humid, and busy. At just an hour's drive from New York City, Harriman is a favored weekend getaway, which means weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. September and October are prime for cool nights and Hudson Valley fall foliage, with color usually peaking mid to late October.
Winter camping at state-park facilities is not offered. Private parks in the area may run reduced or seasonal operations, so travelers should confirm dates directly before booking.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book a campsite near Verplanck
New York state-park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond at Harriman and the Clarence Fahnestock campground at Pelton Pond, are reserved through Reserve America. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day. Reservations can be made online or by calling 1-800-456-2267.
From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3pm, and no walk-ins are allowed. Popular summer weekends and fall foliage weekends should be booked as early as the window opens.
Private parks such as New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, and Black Bear Campground use their own websites or the KOA reservation system, and generally accept longer advance bookings for holiday weekends.
What to expect on-site
Facility levels vary sharply between state and private parks in this area. Each site at Beaver Pond includes a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, and the campground provides full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry facilities plus a dump station for RVs. There are no electrical hookups available. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite.
The Clarence Fahnestock campground at Pelton Pond has no hookups and no dump station. Each of the 80 site pads has a picnic table, charcoal grill, and fire ring, with centrally located restrooms and showers serving both tent and RV loops.
RV renters should confirm site length limits before booking, since Beaver Pond caps rigs at 30 feet and most state-park loops are narrow and wooded. Cell service is spotty in Harriman and Fahnestock. Private KOA and lakeside parks generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and pet-friendly sites.
