Camping near Voorheesville, New York
Voorheesville is a small village in the town of New Scotland in Albany County, about 15 miles southwest of downtown Albany. It sits at the base of the Helderberg Escarpment, the limestone cliff line that defines the western edge of the Hudson-Mohawk Valley and shapes most of the outdoor recreation in the area.
RV travelers use the village as a quiet base for reaching state parks in the Helderbergs, the Mohawk River corridor to the north, and the Hudson River corridor to the east. The closest public campground is Thompsons Lake - Thacher State Park in the hills above the village, while riverfront hookup sites are found north of Voorheesville at Arrowhead Marina and RV Park on the Mohawk River in Glenville.
Private campgrounds in the surrounding towns include Frosty Acres Campgrounds, Country Campsites at Michael Dees Motel, and Blackthorne Campground, giving travelers a mix of state-park tent and trailer sites and private parks with hookups within a short drive of the village.
Things to do around Voorheesville
Thacher State Park is the anchor attraction. The park runs along the Helderberg Escarpment with overlooks of the Hudson-Mohawk Valley, waterfalls, and more than 25 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails. Thompsons Lake, adjacent to the campground, has a sandy swim beach, carry-in boat access, and rentals for canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards.
The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center next to the campground offers exhibits, interpretive programs, and trails for hiking and skiing. Anglers use Thompsons Lake in summer and switch to ice fishing in winter.
Away from the escarpment, the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail follows the river near Arrowhead Marina and RV Park, and Schodack Island State Park across the Hudson offers additional riverfront hiking and paddling.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

How to book campsites near Voorheesville
Thompsons Lake - Thacher State Park is reserved through the New York State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Sites open on a rolling nine-month window, with reservations releasing at 8 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. weekends during the March 15 to Labor Day peak period, and at 9 a.m. daily the rest of the year. Same-day reservations are accepted online until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only, subject to availability.
Private parks in the area, including Arrowhead Marina and RV Park, Frosty Acres Campgrounds, Country Campsites at Michael Dees Motel, and Blackthorne Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Some accept cash or check only, so confirm payment methods at booking.
What to expect on the ground
Thompsons Lake sites are wooded and rustic with no electric hookups. Each site allows up to six people and two vehicles, quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and generator use is limited to set morning and evening windows. Current proof of rabies vaccination is required at check-in for pets.
Arrowhead Marina and RV Park offers grassy and gravel sites along the Mohawk River with 30 and 50 amp service, a dump station, and a limited number of full-hookup sites; the rest use a pump-out service. Some travelers report the entry over railroad tracks is tight for large rigs. Roads into the Helderbergs are hilly and narrow in spots, so plan routes ahead for longer trailers and motorhomes. Cell coverage in the village and along the river is generally reliable but drops in pockets along the escarpment.
