Campgrounds near Walker Valley
Walker Valley is a small hamlet in the Town of Shawangunk, Ulster County, in New York's Hudson Valley. It sits along NY Route 52 where the land begins to climb toward the Shawangunk Ridge, putting RV travelers within a short drive of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, Sam's Point, and the Catskills to the north.
The area is a practical base for exploring the Gunks and the mid-Hudson Valley. Most private RV parks in the region cluster along the Rondout Valley and the Wallkill River corridor, a short drive north and east of Walker Valley. Catskill RV Resort and Rondout Valley RV Campground sit toward Accord and Kerhonkson, while Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort in Gardiner and Skyway Camping Resort serve family RV travelers on the east side of the ridge.
Minnewaska State Park Preserve does not offer RV camping, so RV travelers should plan to base at a private campground and day-trip into the park. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Birchwood Acres extends the family-campground options in the wider region.
Things to do near Walker Valley
Hiking and cliff-top views define the area. Sam's Point, the highest section of the Shawangunks, holds Lake Maratanza, ice-cave crevices, and the 187-foot Verkeerder Kill Falls, reached from the Sam's Point trailhead in nearby Cragsmoor off Route 52. Minnewaska's carriage roads and footpaths cover roughly 50 miles of trail across the ridge, with waterfalls and several sky lakes.
Water activities center on Lake Minnewaska and Lake Awosting, both with designated swim beaches open in summer, plus non-motorized boat launches. The Shawangunk Ridge Trail and Long Path pass through Shawangunk Ridge State Forest for backpackers and day-hikers.
Off the ridge, families use the Wallkill Valley and Hudson Valley rail trails for cycling, and the wineries and farms of the Shawangunk Wine Trail sit within a short drive of most local campgrounds.

Most private campgrounds in the Shawangunk and Rondout Valley area operate on a spring-through-fall season, with the tent-only Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground at the Gunks open from April through mid-November, weather permitting. Winter camping options for RVs are limited, and Shawangunk Ridge State Forest allows only primitive camping year-round under state land rules.
Summer is peak season. Lake Minnewaska and Lake Awosting beaches operate through summer, and weekend day-use parking reservations are required for Sam's Point from mid-April through mid-November on weekends and holidays. Sites at family resorts near Gardiner and Accord fill quickly for summer weekends, and some enforce minimum stays and restrict Saturday arrivals in peak season.
Fall brings foliage traffic through the Rondout and Wallkill valleys, cooler nights, and lighter crowds after the Columbus Day weekend. Spring is muddy on ridge trails as snow melts, but valley campgrounds open through April and May.

How to book campgrounds near Walker Valley
Private RV parks in the area take reservations directly through their own websites and phone lines. Catskill RV Resort, Rondout Valley RV Campground, Skyway Camping Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort in Gardiner, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Birchwood Acres all use their own booking systems, and summer weekends typically require booking well in advance, sometimes with a two-night minimum and restricted Saturday arrivals.
For state-managed camping, the Samuel F. Pryor III Shawangunk Gateway Campground near Minnewaska is tent-only, does not permit RVs, and is operated by the American Alpine Club and Mohonk Preserve through the club's own booking site.
Sam's Point day-use parking is reserved separately through ReserveAmerica on the New York State Parks system, up to 14 days ahead, with morning and afternoon sessions on weekends and holidays.
What to expect
Terrain around Walker Valley is rolling farmland transitioning quickly into the steep Shawangunk Ridge to the west. RV drivers should expect winding two-lane roads on Route 52 and the smaller connectors up to Cragsmoor and Sam's Point, with tight shoulders. Larger rigs are better routed via US 209 and NY 299 to reach campgrounds in the Rondout and Wallkill valleys.
Cell service is generally reliable in the valleys and spotty on the ridge. Most private campgrounds in the area offer full or partial hookups, cabin rentals, pools, and family programming; state and preserve lands are minimalist by design.
Parking at Minnewaska and Sam's Point is limited and fills early on summer weekends. Sam's Point is a carry-in, carry-out area with no trash cans and prohibits cooking, fires, and overnight use, so plan accordingly for day trips from a nearby RV base.

You are never stranded. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Walker Valley RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are very welcome. An RV road trip from Walker Valley can easily reach Vermont, the New Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains (about 90 minutes), or even Acadia National Park in Maine. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by some hosts, you will need to confirm it directly in the listing and ensure protection coverage extends north. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not cover it. Message the host before booking if you are planning a multi-state route so mileage and crossing details are nailed down upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Walker Valley RV trip?
Easier than you would think to budget. Gas prices in Ulster County typically run a bit above the national average, and most rentals you will find on RVezy run on regular unleaded. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A coaches 7 to 10 mpg. For a typical 300-mile Catskills loop in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $130 in fuel depending on current pump prices. Fill up at stations in Pine Bush or Wallkill before climbing Route 52, prices tend to be lower than along US-209 toward Ellenville.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Walker Valley?
The earlier the better, but you have options. For state-park sites at Harriman State Park, reservations open 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends often sell out within hours of opening. Private parks like Rondout Valley Resort and Yogi Bear's Jellystone in Woodridge typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for July, August, and fall foliage weekends. Midweek and shoulder-season trips can often be grabbed 1 to 2 weeks out. Lock the campground first, then book your RV rental in Walker Valley, NY around those dates, this avoids the classic mistake of having the rig but no place to plug in.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Walker Valley?
Very RV-friendly, with one heads-up. Walker Valley sits at the foot of the Shawangunk Ridge along NY-52, a winding but well-maintained two-lane road, while nearby US-209 and I-84 are wide, gentle, and easy to navigate. Watch for steeper grades on Route 52 between Pine Bush and Ellenville and on Route 44/55 climbing toward Minnewaska, downshift and take it slow. Winters can bring snow and ice from December through March, so most rentals run May through November. Avoid the narrow Mohonk Mountain House access roads in a large rig, stick to US-209 and NY-300 for the smoothest path to and from your Hudson Valley campsite.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Walker Valley?
Most private campgrounds near Walker Valley are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Parks like Rondout Valley Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone at Birchwood Acres, and Newburgh KOA offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer or dump stations, hot showers, Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Public sites at Harriman State Park provide electric hookups but no sewer, and you will dump at the on-site station before leaving. Potable water fills are available at most campground entrances. Confirm 50-amp availability if you are renting a larger Class A, smaller Ulster County parks sometimes only offer 30-amp service.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's actually inside a typical Walker Valley RV rental?
More than you would expect, even in the smaller rigs. A typical motorhome rental in Walker Valley sleeps 4 to 8 with real beds (queen up top, convertible dinette, bunks in family-friendly Class Cs), a full kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, roof A/C, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for everyone driving. Many rentals include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for boondocking.
