Campgrounds and RV parks near Walton, NY

Walton sits in the western Catskills of Delaware County, at the edge of the Catskill Forest Preserve. The area is defined by wooded ridges, trout streams, and a mix of state-managed public campgrounds and small private RV parks. Most sites within a short drive fall under the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which operates the region's public campgrounds and roadside camping areas. Bear Spring Mountain, roughly 5 miles south of Walton, is the closest full-service public campground. It anchors a Wildlife Management Area with pond swimming, boat rentals, and an extensive multi-use trail network. Peaceful Valley Campsite and Butternut Grove Campsites offer smaller private options, while the Unadilla / I-88 / Oneonta KOA Journey provides big-rig pull-throughs and full hookups near I-88. For rustic, no-services stays, Russell Brook Roadside Lot is a DEC roadside site set among state forest land. Together these options cover the typical RV renter's range, from hookup-equipped family bases to primitive backcountry pull-offs.

DEC campgrounds, including Bear Spring Mountain, are reserved through the Reserve America system used by New York State Parks. Bookings can be made online or through the Reserve America Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, same-day reservations are allowed until 5pm on day of arrival, and walk-ins are not permitted. Reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, so an advance booking is required even for a last-minute night. Private parks use their own systems. The Unadilla / I-88 / Oneonta KOA Journey books through KOA.com or by phone, with after-hours check-in available. Peaceful Valley Campsite and Butternut Grove Campsites take reservations directly. For summer weekends, holding a site eight or more weeks out is recommended.
