Campgrounds and RV parks near Washington Heights, NY

The region combines state parkland, river recreation, and quick access to New York City day trips. Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park lie a short drive east and offer hiking, swimming beaches, and scenic drives. The Delaware and Neversink Rivers, on the western side of the region, are popular for tubing, kayaking, and fly-fishing. Families staying at Black Bear Campground can use the pool and playground, play mini-golf, or fish from the on-site pond. Catskill RV Resort offers a swimming pool, playground, and basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts. West Point, Storm King Art Center, Woodbury Common outlets, and the Legoland New York theme park are all within a reasonable driving radius for day trips.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October, with the busiest weekends falling between late June and Labor Day. Weekend sites at family resorts like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort and KOA Holiday Deerpark New York City often fill six to eight weeks ahead in July and August, and holiday weekends can require booking months in advance. Fall is a strong shoulder season. Foliage typically peaks in the Hudson Valley from the second week of October into late October, and cooler nights bring campfire weather without the summer crowds. Many family-oriented parks scale back amenities such as pools and activity programming after Labor Day, and most private parks close for the winter by late October or early November. Winter options are limited. Black Bear Campground stays open all year with 50-amp full-hookup sites, and reviewers note heated water hookups that make cold-weather stays possible. Spring camping begins in April, though river levels can be high and buggy conditions pick up by late May.

Terrain in this part of Orange and Sullivan Counties is rolling and wooded, so expect some sites to be unlevel. Reviewers at Black Bear note limited shade at some sites and a bug presence during warmer months, so leveling blocks and insect repellent are worth packing. Cell service is generally reliable near main roads but can drop in the deeper river valleys. Roads into the campgrounds are paved and manageable for larger Class A and Class C rigs, though some interior park roads are gravel and tight around trees. Catskill RV Resort accommodates vehicles up to 40 feet. Wildlife including deer, wild turkey, and the occasional black bear is common, so food and trash should be stored securely. Grocery stores, dump stations, and propane refills are available in Middletown, Monticello, and Port Jervis.
