Campgrounds and RV parks near Wesley Hills, NY

Hiking dominates the area. Harriman State Park maintains an extensive trail network with sections of the Appalachian Trail, and Beaver Pond puts campers within reach of the protected swimming beach at Lake Welch when lifeguards are on duty. At Wawayanda State Park, visitors can paddle Wawayanda Lake, fish, or hike a twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail that runs through the park. Fahnestock adds Canopus Lake, where the sandy shore is the jewel of the park, fishing is excellent for bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental. Smaller retreats like Camp Wyanokie offer lake shores, hiking trails, fishing, and birdwatching for a low-key overnight closer to Wesley Hills.

The public campgrounds around Wesley Hills operate on a warm-season schedule. Beaver Pond typically runs from spring through mid-fall, and Wawayanda State Park camping is open April 1 to October 31. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock normally runs mid-May through early November, but the campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, while the Group Wilderness Campground remains open. Summer is peak season and books up fast: Harriman is a favored weekend getaway from New York City, so weekend sites should be reserved as far in advance as possible. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, thinner crowds, and strong foliage color in October. Late spring is typically the wettest stretch, so RV renters should expect muddy sites and check trail conditions. Winter shuts most tent and RV camping in the region, but Fahnestock Winter Park includes 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as an area for sledding. Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York operates for RVers needing off-season hookups.

Facilities vary widely. Beaver Pond has 73 regular tent sites, 55 platform tent sites, and 7 RV sites without hookups, with comfort stations, showers, laundry facilities, and a dumping station on site. Select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long, and pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite. Alcohol is also prohibited. Wawayanda group sites are rustic: water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Camp Wyanokie is more primitive still, with no accommodation for RVs, no running water, toilets, electricity, or WiFi, but two latrines, fire pits, and charcoal grills. Black bears inhabit Harriman, Bear Mountain, and the New Jersey Highlands, so food and trash must be stored securely. Deer ticks are common; insect repellent and tick checks are recommended.
