Campgrounds and RV parks near West Sand Lake, NY

Cherry Plain State Park is a compact draw for day trips from any nearby campground. The park's setting on Black River Pond features a sandy beach with adjacent picnic grounds and a boat launch. The park also has bridle paths and hiking, biking, and nature trails that serve as cross-country ski trails in winter. Anglers enjoy fishing for bass, bullheads, and pickerel here, and a Charcoal Kiln Site can be found by hiking a trail that begins at the southern corner of the main parking lot. Grafton Lakes State Park, about a half-hour north, adds swimming beaches and paddling on multiple ponds. To the east, the Taconic Crest Trail and Massachusetts's Mount Greylock offer longer day hikes. Albany, Troy, and Saratoga Springs are all within an hour for museums, minor-league baseball, and rainy-day options families can fall back on.

The camping season in this part of New York is short and predictable. State-park campgrounds like Cherry Plain follow the standard OPRHP calendar, opening for camping around Memorial Day weekend on a Fridays-and-weekends schedule, then running daily from late June through Labor Day. Private parks such as Alps Family Campground Inc and Adventure Bound Deer Run generally open earlier in spring and stay open later into fall, but hookups and amenities can be limited on the shoulder edges. July and August are peak, with warm days, warm pond water, and the highest booking pressure. September brings cooler nights, thinning crowds, and early foliage in the Taconic hills, making it a strong choice for RV travelers who want quieter sites. Winter closes the state campground entirely; from the day after Labor Day through spring, the Cherry Plain campground is closed and the park office typically refers callers to Grafton Lakes State Park. Snow and freeze-thaw cycles also limit private-campground operations across the corridor.

Cherry Plain is a small, quiet park. The campground features 30 total sites: 10 trailer sites, 10 lakeside tent sites, and 10 hike-in tent sites, with facilities that include modern restrooms with showers, picnic tables, and fire rings at campsites. There are no full hookups, so RV renters should arrive with fresh water and empty tanks. Motors are not permitted on Black River Pond, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental. Private parks in the corridor generally offer water and electric, some with sewer, plus pools, playgrounds, and camp stores geared to families. A camping party and their equipment may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights, after which the camping party and equipment must leave the site and facility for 48 hours before registering again. Cell coverage is generally usable but can be patchy in the hills east of town.
