Campgrounds near White Plains, New York

White Plains sits in southern Westchester County, roughly 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. RV renters use it as a base for trips into New York City and for weekends in the Lower Hudson Valley. There are no campgrounds inside the city itself, so most sites lie 30 to 90 minutes away by road, spread across New York State Parks, the National Park Service, and a small number of private RV parks. The closest full-service urban option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, positioned as the closest RV park to New York City. To the northwest, Harriman State Park's primitive Beaver Pond Campground has no hookups and is best suited to tent campers, but it can accommodate smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans up to 30 feet long. North of the city, Pelton Pond sits within Clarence Fahnestock State Park, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc offers a private lakefront alternative in Dutchess County. South of White Plains, Floyd Bennett Field is a Gateway National Recreation Area site in Brooklyn with tent and RV parking.

Things to do around White Plains

From Liberty Harbor RV Park, visitors typically skip the drive into Manhattan and use transit instead. The NY Waterway ferry runs from Liberty Harbor on weekdays to Pier 11 near Wall Street, other nearby ferries operate seven days a week, and the Grove Street PATH station is a short walk up Marin Boulevard, putting Manhattan roughly fifteen minutes away. Harriman State Park is the outdoor anchor. The park has more than 200 miles of trails that range from easy to strenuous, plus 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities such as swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. At Clarence Fahnestock, Canopus Lake has a sandy shore and picnic area, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental in season. At Floyd Bennett Field, the grounds include hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, a recreation complex with bike rentals, and an outdoor archery range.

The camping season around White Plains is short and heavily weighted toward late spring through mid-fall. Beaver Pond opens for walk-in camping in mid-April, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock typically operates from mid-spring through late fall, though campers should confirm status before booking, as it has been affected by recent construction of a new bathhouse. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc operates as a seasonal campground from spring through early fall in Dutchess County, and camping at Floyd Bennett Field is typically available from mid-spring through mid-fall. Summer weekends fill fastest. At just an hour's drive from New York City, Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, which means weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, spring can be wet, and winter shifts most state parks to day-use only. Liberty Harbor is the outlier: the park is open year round and accepts arrivals around the clock.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book a campsite near White Plains

New York State Parks use the Reserve America system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday from March 15 through Labor Day. This applies to both Beaver Pond in Harriman State Park and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock. Floyd Bennett Field is federally managed. Reservations are made online at recreation.gov, are required in advance, and stay lengths are capped. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc and Liberty Harbor RV Park are privately operated and book directly through the campgrounds. Reserve well in advance for Liberty Harbor, especially during peak tourist seasons when both the park and surrounding ferry services experience heavy demand.

What to expect

Expect a mix of urban RV parks and rustic state-park loops, not destination resorts. Beaver Pond has 125 campsites with picnic tables and fire rings, full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry, and a dump station for RVs, but no electrical hookups, and pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is permitted at each campsite. Pelton Pond offers a more forested feel with a smaller number of sites. Urban sites trade scenery for access. Liberty Harbor provides 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, pull-through sites for larger rigs, a dump station, modern shower and restroom facilities, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Floyd Bennett Field is rustic by comparison, with basic facilities and no hookups. Bugs, weekend crowds near NYC, and tight urban approaches for larger rigs are worth planning for.
