Campgrounds near Zena, New York
Zena is a small hamlet in the Town of Woodstock in Ulster County, sitting just northwest of Kingston and a couple of miles from the village of Woodstock. It functions as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the eastern Catskills, with quick access to Route 28, Route 212, and the New York State Thruway at Kingston.
Campgrounds in the surrounding area range from private RV parks with hookups to state-run sites inside the Catskill Forest Preserve. Options within a short drive include Camp Goat Hill, New Life Campground, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc, Blue Mountain Campground, and So-Hi Campgrounds, which together cover a mix of family-oriented amenities and quieter wooded sites.
The surrounding landscape is defined by the Catskill Park, the Ashokan Reservoir, and the Esopus Creek corridor. Kingston sits roughly eight miles from Zena and provides supermarkets, propane, dump stations at nearby private parks, and RV service options, which matters for longer trips.
Things to do near Zena
Hiking is the anchor activity. Trails on Overlook Mountain start minutes from Woodstock, and Kaaterskill Falls, one of the highest cascades in New York, is a short drive north. Slide Mountain, the tallest peak in the Catskills, and the Burroughs Range trailhead sit within an hour's drive.
The Ashokan Reservoir offers a paved rail-trail loop suitable for family biking and stroller-friendly walks, plus permitted fishing. The Esopus Creek near Phoenicia is the region's tubing hub and a well-known trout stream, and the Catskill Mountain Railroad runs scenic train rides from the same village.
Woodstock itself has restaurants, galleries, and weekend markets. Uptown Kingston adds historic Stockade District blocks, waterfront dining on Rondout Creek, and Hudson River boat tours.

Summer is peak season. Catskill campgrounds fill quickly on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and some state sites operate only during that window. Book several weeks or months ahead for July and August, and expect warm days in the low 80s Fahrenheit with humid afternoons and occasional thunderstorms.
Fall is the second peak. Foliage in the Catskills typically peaks in mid-October, and prime foliage weekends can sell out at the full nine-month reservation window. Days are cool and crisp, nights drop toward freezing by late October, and mountain roads see the season's heaviest visitor traffic.
Winter brings cold temperatures and significant snow. Most private campgrounds close for the season, though nearby Hunter Mountain and Belleayre support snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing. Spring is muddy and variable, with cool temperatures, high stream flows, and a gradual reopening of seasonal parks through April and May.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

How to book a campground near Zena
Public campgrounds in the Catskill Forest Preserve are managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and booked exclusively through ReserveAmerica, either online at newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP. Do not call the individual campgrounds. Reservations open up to nine months in advance, with new dates released at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends between March 15 and Labor Day.
Private campgrounds near Zena, including Camp Goat Hill, New Life Campground, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc, Blue Mountain Campground, and So-Hi Campgrounds, are booked directly with each operator. For summer weekends and foliage season, reserve early and confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and pet policies before arrival.
What to expect
Terrain around Zena is hilly and wooded. Access roads to some campgrounds are narrow and winding, and longer motorhomes should confirm turning access and low-clearance branches with the campground before arrival. Cell coverage is reliable in Zena and Kingston but patchy deeper in the Catskill Park.
DEC campgrounds are more rustic than typical private RV parks. Expect tent and trailer sites with picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and hot showers, but no individual hookups at most locations, and unsupervised swimming at designated beaches only. Private parks in the area typically offer electric and water hookups, dump stations, and family amenities like pools and playgrounds.
Bears are present throughout the Catskills. Store food and scented items inside the RV or in provided lockers, and follow posted regulations on firewood, which must generally be sourced locally to prevent invasive-pest spread.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Zena, NY
How much does an RV rental in Zena cost, and how can I save?
Renting an RV in Zena is more affordable than you might expect, especially compared to peak Catskills lodging rates in nearby Woodstock. On RVezy, travel trailers in the area typically start around $100 to $175 per night, campervans run $150 to $225, and larger Class C motorhomes range from $200 to $350. Shoulder seasons like late April, May, and October often bring lower rates and quieter campgrounds. For a cheap RV rental in Zena, filter by travel trailers (the host delivers, so you skip fuel costs), book midweek, and message hosts directly about multi-night discounts. Pro tip: booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead of fall foliage weekends locks in the best price before leaf-peepers drive demand up.
visitulstercountyny.com/plan-your-visit/where-to-stay/category/camping-glamping/What license do I need to rent an RV in Zena, New York?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Zena for almost every rig on RVezy. New York issues a standard Class D license that covers passenger vehicles and most recreational vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or less, which includes virtually all campervans, travel trailers, and Class C motorhomes on the platform. Only very large Class A motorhomes over 26,000 pounds GVWR or longer than 40 feet require New York's special R endorsement, and those are rare on peer-to-peer rentals. You must be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? An International Driving Permit paired with your home license keeps you set.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/new-york-state-learner-permit-and-driver-license-class-descriptionsWhat protection and roadside coverage are included with my Zena RV rental?
Every RV rental in Zena booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head toward the Catskills on Route 28 with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), which lets you match coverage to your budget and comfort. Roadside assistance is just a phone call away whether you have a flat on the way to Kingston, a battery issue at the campground, or need a tow off a backroad near Mount Tremper. For full details on what each plan covers, review RVezy's renter protection plans before booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Zena RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy that applies to every trip, including a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund outcomes depend on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. Because RVezy (not the individual host) manages the policy, you don't have to compare fine print across listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help you find a replacement RV or issue a refund. That clarity is one reason first-time renters feel comfortable booking a Zena RV trip months in advance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Zena RV rental?
Absolutely, Zena and the surrounding Woodstock area are very dog-friendly, and you'll find plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Zena on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to see listings whose hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots (some charge a small pet fee, listed transparently on the listing). Once you arrive, your pup will love the trails at the Comeau Property in Woodstock village, the swimming holes along the Sawkill Creek, and the leashed trails at nearby Kenneth L. Wilson Campground. Pro tip: pack a tick comb. The Catskills are beautiful but ticky from April through October, so a quick nightly check keeps everyone happy.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/dogs/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in the Zena area?
Yes, RV delivery in Zena is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you're new to RVing or just don't want to drive a big rig down winding Catskill roads. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up the RV at your campsite at Kenneth L. Wilson Campground, Saugerties/Woodstock KOA, or even a private property, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on distance from the host's location and are shown upfront on the listing. Use the Delivery filter when searching. It's the easiest way to enjoy a Catskills RV trip without ever sitting in the driver's seat.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Zena%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I travel from Zena, and are mileage limits a problem?
You've got incredible range from Zena, and mileage policies on RVezy are set per listing so you can shop for what fits your plans. Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage (perfect for longer loops), while others include a generous daily allotment plus a small per-mile fee beyond that. Popular drives from Zena include Woodstock village (5 minutes), Kingston waterfront (15 minutes), New Paltz and the Mohonk Preserve (about 35 minutes), Hunter Mountain (45 minutes), the Ashokan Reservoir loop (20 minutes), and a scenic 2-hour run up to Lake George. New York City is about a 2-hour drive south. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger Hudson Valley loop, message the host before booking and ask about mileage; many will customize.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Zena%2C%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Zena for my RV?
You're spoiled for choice. Within 20 minutes of Zena you can park at Kenneth L. Wilson Campground in Mount Tremper, a state-run gem with RV hookups, a swimming pond, and a dog park right beside the Catskill Forest Preserve. Saugerties/Woodstock KOA offers full hookups with 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, and a pool, just 15 minutes north. So-Hi Campground in Accord has large shaded private sites perfect for travel trailers. Blue Mountain Campground near Saugerties is open year-round for full-hookup rigs. For a more rustic experience, Woodland Valley Public Campground sits deep in the Catskill High Peaks about 35 minutes west. Pro tip: book state campgrounds through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance for peak summer dates.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/kenneth-l-wilson/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=117When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Zena?
Zena shines from late May through mid-October, with each window offering something different. Late May through June brings 70s by day, lush green forests, and fewer crowds. July and August are peak warm weather (high 70s to mid-80s, occasional humidity) and best for swimming holes like Big Deep and Peekamoose Blue Hole. Mid-September through mid-October is foliage season, when the Catskills turn red, orange, and gold and daytime temps sit in the comfortable 50s to 60s. Winter RVing is limited locally, and most campgrounds close after Columbus Day; expect snow and temps that can dip into the teens if you do venture out. Pro tip: the second weekend in October is typically peak leaf color in Ulster County, book by August.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be more than okay. First time renting an RV is exactly who RVezy is built for. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, leveling, the awning, the generator, and how to dump tanks, so you leave knowing how to use everything. You can also message the host before booking with any question, no matter how small. If you're nervous about driving, choose a campervan or small Class C (think Mercedes Sprinter or a 24-foot rig); they handle a lot like a large SUV. Or skip driving entirely with delivery and setup. Pro tip: do a quick practice loop in a quiet parking lot before heading toward Woodstock village's narrow streets.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-licenseWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
Help is always a phone call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat on Route 28, a dead battery at Kenneth L. Wilson Campground, or an issue with the slide-out, you can call any hour and get support. The Zena area has reliable cell coverage along major routes (Route 375, Route 28, the Thruway), though deeper Catskill backroads can be patchy, so screenshot directions before you head into remote spots. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate with your host. Pro tip: snap a few photos of the RV's exterior at pickup so any roadside or post-trip discussion is quick and painless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Zena RV rental into other states or up to Canada?
Yes, multi-state RV road trips from Zena are very popular and totally doable. You're perfectly positioned for an RV road trip from Zena to Vermont's Green Mountains (about 2.5 hours), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (90 minutes), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 8 hours), or down to the Jersey Shore (around 3 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada (such as Montreal, roughly 4.5 hours north) depend on the host's insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm and share your route. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: I-87 (the Northway) is the fastest route to Lake George and the Canadian border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Zena RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's manageable with a little planning. Gas in Ulster County typically runs slightly above the U.S. national average. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for Class C motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for travel trailers (depending on your tow vehicle), and 16 to 22 MPG for campervans. For a typical 3-night Zena RV trip with around 200 miles of driving, budget roughly $80 to $150 in fuel for a mid-sized rig. Fill up in Kingston or Saugerties where stations are cheaper and easier to maneuver than in tight Woodstock village. Pro tip: stations off I-87 exits near Kingston tend to have easier RV access than in-town pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Zena?
Earlier than you think for the popular ones. New York State campgrounds like Kenneth L. Wilson and Woodland Valley open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and weekends from late June through mid-October fill quickly, especially fall foliage weekends in late September and early October. Private parks like Saugerties/Woodstock KOA and Blue Mountain Campground accept reservations year-round and tend to have more availability midweek. For July 4th and Labor Day weekends, aim to book by February or March. Shoulder-season weeknights (May or October) you can often grab 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: if your dream campground is full, set a calendar reminder to check ReserveAmerica daily at 7 a.m., that's when cancellations are released.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Zena?
Driving around Zena is pleasant and scenic, with a few quirks worth knowing. The main routes (Route 28, Route 375, Route 212, and I-87) are well-maintained and easy for any size RV. Woodstock village itself has narrow streets and tight parking, so for shopping or dining there, park at the lot near the Comeau Property and walk in. Catskill backroads can be steep, curvy, and shaded with low-hanging branches, so check your RV height (most are 10 to 13 feet) and stick to numbered routes. Winter brings snow and occasional black ice from December through March. Pro tip: avoid Platte Clove Road (Route 16) in any RV, it's narrow, steep, and seasonally closed; take Route 23A through Tannersville instead.
dot.ny.gov/portal/page/portal/tas/operations/highway-conditionsWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Zena?
Catskill-area campgrounds offer a solid mix of full and partial hookups. Saugerties/Woodstock KOA and Blue Mountain Campground both provide full hookups (water, 50-amp electric, sewer) plus Wi-Fi and cable at many sites. Kenneth L. Wilson Campground offers electric and water at most RV sites with a centralized dump station, restrooms with hot showers, and a recycling center. So-Hi Campground has RV and motorhome hookups with large private sites. For dumping and water fills between trips, Kenneth L. Wilson's dump station is open to registered campers, and most KOAs allow non-guest dumps for a small fee. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground; trailhead parking lots in the Catskills do not have potable water.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's inside the RVs available in Zena?
More than you'd expect. Most motorhome rentals in Zena come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (great for a family RV trip in Zena), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with heat and AC, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid power. Class B campervans are more compact but still include sleeping, a small kitchen, and often a wet bath. Wi-Fi varies, so confirm with your host if you need to work on the road. Pro tip: check the listing's seatbelt count if you're traveling with kids, not every seat is travel-rated.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts in the Zena area offer a wide range of add-ons that can transform your trip. Common options include linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits with pots, pans and dishes, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, bike racks, generators, kayaks or paddleboards (the Hudson and Esopus are right there), and even pet packages with bowls and beds. Pickup and dropoff is usually at the host's address near Zena, Woodstock, or Kingston, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough at pickup. Many hosts also offer delivery to local campgrounds. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each listing. Pro tip: bundle bedding plus a kitchen kit, it usually saves money versus buying separately, and you'll arrive ready to camp.
visitulstercountyny.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card (typically authorized a few days before pickup) and released after the trip once the host confirms there's no damage and the RV is returned in similar condition. Deposit amounts vary by listing and are shown upfront. Avoid issues by doing a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and dropoff, taking date-stamped photos, and returning the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in the agreement. Pro tip: ask the host about cleanliness expectations at pickup; a quick sweep and trash takeout usually keeps your deposit untouched.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for an RV trip from Zena?
Here's the move locals love: build your trip around the Ashokan Rail Trail. This flat 11.5-mile crushed-stone path skirts the Ashokan Reservoir just 15 minutes from Zena and offers some of the most jaw-dropping Catskill mountain views in the Hudson Valley, especially at sunrise and during fall foliage. Park your RV at the West Hurley trailhead (large lot, RV-friendly), bike or walk a stretch, then drive 10 minutes to Phoenicia for tubing on the Esopus Creek and lunch at Sweet Sue's pancakes. Cap the day with a free concert at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock or stargazing back at your campsite. It's the kind of day that makes people fall in love with RV camping in Zena and start planning the next trip before this one ends.
