Campgrounds and RV parks near Blanchard, PA

Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir is the main draw. Renters can swim at the park beach in summer, launch boats, and fish the lake with a valid Pennsylvania license. More than 14 miles of multi-use trails wind through the park, offering walks through forests, fields, and wetlands, and the park is a strong bird-watching site, including sightings of its namesake bald eagle. Beyond the park, RV travelers can drive into Bellefonte and State College for restaurants, Penn State campus attractions, and Beaver Stadium on game weekends. In winter, ice fishing, ice skating, sledding, and cross-country skiing are common when conditions allow, though ice thickness is not monitored.

The Bald Eagle area has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summer is the busiest camping window, with warm, humid afternoons and average highs near 82 degrees Fahrenheit in July. This is when RV sites at the Russell P. Letterman Campground and nearby private parks fill fastest, especially on holiday weekends and Penn State football weekends. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Two round, canvas and wood yurts in the Russell P. Letterman Campground open the second Friday in April and close after the end of deer season in mid-December, which roughly frames the modern campground season as well. Fall brings foliage across Bald Eagle Mountain and cool nights suited to campfires. Winter camping is limited. Snow in the region usually begins around November and ends by March, roads through the state forest can be rough, and most private campgrounds close. Some day-use activities such as ice fishing and cross-country skiing continue when conditions permit.

The Russell P. Letterman Campground at Bald Eagle State Park is the most modern option near Blanchard. Each campsite has a paved parking spur, picnic table, and fire ring. Electric hookups of 30 amps are available at most sites, and some campsites have 50-amp hookups. Some sites have full service hookup, which includes sewer, water, and electricity. Sites in Bald Eagle State Forest are much more rustic, with roadside pull-offs along dirt and gravel forest roads and few amenities beyond a picnic table and fire ring. Smaller RVs and trailers fit better than large rigs. Private parks in the area range from full-hookup RV setups to primitive fairground-style camping. Centre County Grange Fairgrounds is best known as the site of the Grange Fair each August. Expect stronger cell coverage near Bellefonte and State College and spottier service deeper in the state forest.
