Camping near Chester Hill, Pennsylvania
Chester Hill is a small borough in Centre County on the Allegheny Plateau of central Pennsylvania, adjacent to Philipsburg and within easy reach of the Moshannon State Forest region. The area sits at roughly 1,450 feet in elevation, surrounded by hardwood ridges, trout streams, and the wetland complex that gives Black Moshannon its name. For RV travelers, it functions as a quiet base between State College and Interstate 80.
Most campgrounds within a short drive fall into two categories: state park campgrounds managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and privately owned family parks. Black Moshannon State Park covers 3,394 acres of forests and wetlands, and more than 43,000 acres of the Moshannon State Forest surround the park. Simon B Elliott State Park sits inside that same forest, while Woodland Campground, Lauder Family Campground, and Glendale Valley Campground offer private-park amenities closer to major highways.
Day-trip options from Chester Hill include Penn State University in State College, the elk viewing area to the northwest in the PA Wilds, and dozens of miles of forest roads suited to gravel biking and wildlife watching.
Things to do around Chester Hill
Black Moshannon Lake is the local anchor for on-water recreation. Boats with electric motors are allowed on Black Moshannon Lake, and the park rents kayaks, canoes, and rowboats seasonally. A sandy swimming beach operates in summer, and the surrounding bog boardwalks give visitors a close look at carnivorous plants, orchids, and species normally found farther north.
Hikers can pick up the Allegheny Front Trail, a 40-mile loop trail that encircles the park in Moshannon State Forest. Shorter interpretive trails suit families with young children. Anglers target native and stocked trout in the streams around Simon B Elliott State Park, and hunters use large sections of the surrounding state forest in season.
Off-road riders head to the Snow Shoe ATV trail system east of town, and Penn State football weekends draw heavy traffic through the region each fall.

The primary camping season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from April through October, with most private facilities closing by late fall and reopening in spring. The Simon B Elliott campground is open from early May through October, while Black Moshannon State Park is open year round, though many amenities scale back outside the warm months.
Summer is the peak booking window. Weekends in July and August fill months ahead, particularly around the July 4 holiday and any Penn State home football weekend in the fall. Bug pressure (mosquitoes and black flies) is highest in late May and June near the bog and wetland areas, so bring effective repellent. Fall brings reliable color from late September through mid-October and cooler nights that dip into the 30s Fahrenheit.
Winter camping is possible at Black Moshannon and appeals to snowmobiling visitors and ice anglers, but temperatures often sit well below freezing and water service to sites is typically shut off.
How to book a site
Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, including Black Moshannon State Park and Simon B Elliott State Park, are reserved through the state's central system. Reservations can be made online or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance.
Private campgrounds in the area, including Woodland Campground, Lauder Family Campground, and Glendale Valley Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Sites at these operators vary in length and hookup type, so calling ahead helps for larger rigs and pull-throughs.
For holiday weekends and fall football Saturdays, book as early as the window opens. Cancellation notification services can help when a state park is showing sold out.
What to expect on the ground
State park sites at Black Moshannon include a mix of modern (electric) and non-electric sites with picnic tables and fire rings, plus hot showers, flush restrooms, and a dump station. Simon B Elliott is more rustic: a 25-site camping area offers modern restrooms (no showers) and a sanitary dump station, and no utility or water hookups are offered, though potable water is available at spigots near sites 10 and 24. Pets are permitted on all sites.
Private parks in the region generally provide 30 and 50 amp hookups, laundry, camp stores, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi of varying reliability. Cell coverage is spotty across the plateau: AT&T and T-Mobile signals tend to work well near the I-80 corridor, while signal fades quickly inside the state forest.
Bears are active in the Moshannon area. Store food inside the RV, use bear-resistant trash containers where provided, and never leave cooking gear out overnight. Firewood should be sourced locally to limit the spread of invasive pests.
