Camping near Claysburg, Pennsylvania
Claysburg sits in southern Blair County along US-220 and Interstate 99, in the ridge-and-valley country of the Allegheny Front. Claysburg is a census-designated place along Interstate 99 and the Allegheny Front in Blair County, Pennsylvania, situated near the base of Blue Knob. The town is a practical base for RV trips into Bedford and Huntingdon counties, with Blue Knob State Park about fifteen minutes west and Raystown Lake roughly forty-five minutes to the east.
Blue Knob State Park offers year-round wilderness adventures on 6,128 acres of woodland in the northwestern tip of Bedford County, west of I-99. That elevation shapes the local camping experience: the elevation of the park can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than the surrounding cities.
Private options round out the area. Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade sits just off Route 764 close to town. Wrights Orchard Station Campground lies south toward Bedford, while Heritage Cove Resort and James Creek RV Resort put RV travelers on the shoreline of Raystown Lake.
Things to do near Claysburg
Blue Knob State Park anchors the western side of the trip. The park offers activities such as fishing, horseback riding, and mountain biking in the summer, and the winter offers hunting, hiking, and cross-country skiing. A summer swimming pool and streamside fishing round out the state park's warm-season offerings.
Raystown Lake anchors the eastern trip. The Heritage Cove boat ramp and docking are on Raystown Lake, the no-wake zone is ideal for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing, and kayaks, canoes and pontoon boats are available to rent. A refreshing outdoor pool is open daily during season, and the private boat launch and docking provide direct access to Raystown Lake. Trough Creek State Park and the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site add day-trip options within an hour's drive.

Spring is short and wet at elevation. Trails soften, black flies appear in May, and streamside sites can stay damp into early June before the campground season fully hits its stride.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

How to book campgrounds near Claysburg
State park sites are booked through Pennsylvania DCNR. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance at Blue Knob State Park. Online reservations for day use and overnight facilities can be made by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
Private parks manage their own systems. Heritage Cove Resort and James Creek RV Resort take direct bookings through their websites, with Good Sam listings as a secondary channel. Weimers RV 764 and Wrights Orchard Station handle reservations by phone.
For summer weekends and any holiday, book state park sites as soon as the eleven-month window opens and lock in Raystown Lake full-hookup sites at least eight to twelve weeks out. Midweek shoulder-season stays usually clear on shorter notice.
What to expect at Claysburg-area campgrounds
Expect a split between rustic state park camping and full-service private RV parks. Heritage Cove offers 200-plus full-hookup sites for seasonal, weekly, monthly, or daily camping at Raystown Lake, with a variety of pad types including premier, pull-through, pool-side, and standard sites. Full-hookup RV sites include electric (30/50 amp), water, and sewer connections.
Blue Knob is a different experience. There are 24 modern electric campsites accommodating RVs and trailers up to 30 feet long, with modern 30- or 50-amp electric hookups depending on the site, no water or sewer at the pad, and a dumping station and water spigot in the park. Cell service is spotty at elevation, and the nearest full-service grocery is in Duncansville or Bedford.
Bring layers even in July: mountain nights run cool. Pets are allowed at designated state park sites and at most private parks, with leash rules enforced.
