Campgrounds near Duncannon
Duncannon sits at the confluence of the Juniata and Susquehanna Rivers in Perry County, Pennsylvania, about a fifteen-minute drive north of Harrisburg. The Appalachian Trail runs through town, and the surrounding ridges and river corridors put a mix of state park, private, and riverfront campgrounds within a short drive. RV renters typically use Duncannon as a base for river fishing, hiking, and day trips into Hershey, Gettysburg, and Lancaster County.
Options within roughly fifteen miles cover a range of styles. Little Buffalo State Park sits in Perry County and covers 923 acres, with its focal point being the 88-acre Holman Lake. The park campground offers walk-to sites, standard sites, and sites with electric and water hookups, and a handful of full-hookup sites. Camp Hebron near Halifax has 38 wooded campsites near Mountain View Lake and Powell's Creek, with 11 full RV hookups, 13 electric sites, and 14 primitive tent sites, plus a heated bathhouse and a dump station. Ferryboat Campsites in Liverpool and Lake Heron Retreat provide riverside and lakeside private-park settings, while Harrisburg East Campground offers an easier interstate-adjacent stop closer to the city.
Things to do around Duncannon
Water dominates the itinerary. The Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers are known for smallmouth bass, catfish, and kayaking, and boat launches sit within a few miles of town. Little Buffalo State Park's 88-acre Holman Lake supports swimming, fishing, and boating, with recreational opportunities including hiking and picnicking as well.
On land, the Appalachian Trail crosses the Susquehanna at Duncannon and climbs Peters Mountain and Cove Mountain, both popular half-day hikes with river overlooks. Historic features at the park include Shoaffs Mill, where farmers and merchants once gathered while grain was ground. A covered bridge and roughly eight miles of trails wind through the surrounding forests, suitable for hiking and mountain biking. At Camp Hebron, amenities include hot showers, restrooms, a swimming pool, and hiking trails throughout the wooded property. Day trips to Hersheypark, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and Gettysburg National Military Park are all inside a one-hour drive.

Most campgrounds around Duncannon run a mid-April to mid-October season. Little Buffalo State Park's campground operates seasonally from the day before trout season, typically mid-April, through the third Sunday in October. Camp Hebron's campground is open from mid-April to mid-October as well. Winter camping options in the immediate area are limited, so cold-weather trips typically shift to year-round private parks closer to Harrisburg.
Summer is the peak booking window. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day sell out well in advance at the state park and at river-adjacent private parks like Ferryboat Campsites. Fall brings cooler nights, reliable foliage color across Peters Mountain and Cove Mountain, and easier midweek availability.
Spring and early summer can bring high, muddy water on the Susquehanna and Juniata after heavy rain, which affects river launches and bank fishing. Renters planning to boat or swim should check river gauge conditions the week of the trip, and note that river-level sites at private campgrounds are occasionally closed during flood events.

Sandy went above and beyond. Leading up to the rental dates she was in communication, making sure we were on the same page. I opted for delivery rather than pickup, and she made sure the rv was delivered early so we could fully enjoy the rental dates. We had a normal issue w the AC (the unit froze) but she was very communicative and helpful until the problem was solved (she suggested to turn it to fan in case the unit was frozen, and it quickly thawed). Always very sweet and courteous, always responsive. My four year old son loved the trailer, was very upset to understand that we had to give it back 😂. Thanks, Sandy!

How to book campsites near Duncannon
Pennsylvania state parks use a central reservation system. Reservations for Little Buffalo State Park are made online through the Pennsylvania State Parks system, operated on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Phone bookings go through 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757).
Private campgrounds book directly. Camp Hebron, Ferryboat Campsites, Lake Heron Retreat, and Harrisburg East Campground each take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and holiday weekends often require a two or three-night minimum. Camp Hebron stays are a minimum of 2 nights and a maximum of 10 consecutive nights. Book summer weekends eight to twelve weeks out for the best chance at a full-hookup RV site.
What to expect on-site
Sites in this area lean rustic-to-modern rather than resort-style. State park sites are wooded and spaced for privacy, with fire rings, picnic tables, and shared bathhouses. At Little Buffalo State Park, sites include flush toilets, warm showers, some electric and water hookups, picnic tables, and a fire ring. Full-hookup availability is limited at the state park, so RV renters needing sewer connections often prefer private parks.
Private campgrounds vary in feel. At Camp Hebron, sites sit close together with minimal separation between them, and amenities include hot showers, restrooms, a swimming pool, and hiking trails throughout the wooded property. The Camp Hebron campground is pet and alcohol free, and quiet hours run between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Cell service can be spotty in the ridges outside town, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving Harrisburg.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Duncannon%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Duncannon, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Duncannon, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special motorhome endorsement for the Class A, Class B, and Class C RVs available on RVezy. The main requirements are that you're generally 25 or older and have a valid driver's license, which RVezy verifies through a quick approved driver check during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before your trip. Once that's sorted, your host will walk you through every system at pickup so you feel confident before pulling onto Routes 11/15.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy for every RV rental in Duncannon, PA, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. The exact refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel and on special circumstances like natural disasters or severe weather, which matters in central Pennsylvania where summer thunderstorms and the occasional remnant of an Atlantic hurricane can roll through. You'll see the full policy and any applicable refund terms in your RVezy account before you confirm payment, and the support team can help walk you through any changes you need to make.

Pennsylvania state parks like Little Buffalo and Gifford Pinchot allow pets on designated campsites, so you can book a hookup site and bring Fido along. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees, and bring a tie-out since Duncannon's wooded campgrounds are full of deer and squirrels that will tempt any leash-free dog.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/Pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Duncannon?
Yes, RV delivery in Duncannon is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig over the Clarks Ferry Bridge. Many local hosts will drop the motorhome or travel trailer at your chosen campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Riverfront Campground in Duncannon, Little Buffalo State Park in Newport, and Ferryboat Campsites in Liverpool. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your campsite number. Pro tip: book delivery for a Thursday arrival so you have the whole weekend set up and ready.

dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LittleBuffaloStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV rental in Duncannon, PA?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Duncannon is late April through mid-October, with two standout windows. Late spring (May to early June) brings 65 to 78°F days, blooming dogwoods along the Susquehanna, and lighter campground bookings. The crown jewel is fall foliage from late September through the third week of October, when Perry County's maples and oaks turn gold and crimson along the Appalachian Trail ridges, with crisp 55 to 70°F days. Summer is warm and humid (80 to 88°F) and great for swimming and tubing. Winter is quieter but doable in a four-season RV. Pro tip: book your fall foliage trip by July, as Riverfront Campground and Little Buffalo fill up fast.
weather.gov/ctp/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I get help in Duncannon?
You're in great hands. First time renting an RV in Duncannon is one of the easiest places to start, because the town is small, the rural roads around Perry County are quiet, and almost every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup. They'll walk you through the propane, water, electrical hookups, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can text or call them throughout your trip. Stick to gentle starter routes like the short drive to Little Buffalo State Park or the riverside cruise up Route 11/15 to Liverpool. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer for your first trip, and ask your host to record a quick video walkthrough so you can replay it at the campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180693-For-rentersWhat happens if I break down during my Duncannon RV trip?

Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN at pickup so you have it handy.

Gettysburg National Military Park is 50 miles south (about an hour). Lancaster County's Amish Country sits 55 miles southeast, and the Pocono Mountains are about 130 miles northeast on I-81. Cross-border trips into Maryland, New York, West Virginia, and Ohio are typically allowed (confirm with your host), but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage. Pro tip: ask your host about a one-way or extended-mileage package if you want to loop through multiple states.
visitpa.com/region/dutch-country-roadsHow much should I budget for fuel during my Duncannon RV rental?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but central Pennsylvania is friendlier than you might think. Expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C motorhome rental in Duncannon, 15 to 20 MPG for a Class B campervan, and roughly the same as your tow vehicle for travel trailers. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so check GasBuddy before fueling, and try the Sheetz and Rutter's stations along US-11/15, both of which can usually fit larger rigs. Pro tip: top off in Duncannon or Marysville before heading north on US-22/322, where stations are spread out across forested ridges.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Duncannon?
For the best campgrounds near Duncannon, PA, plan to book early, but you're not locked out if you're a last-minute planner. Pennsylvania state parks like Little Buffalo, Gifford Pinchot, and Pine Grove Furnace open reservations 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Summer Saturdays and fall foliage weekends in October sell out fastest, so aim for 4 to 6 months ahead. Private parks like Riverfront Campground and Ferryboat Campsites usually have more flexibility, often available 2 to 4 weeks out midweek. Pro tip: if a state park is full, set a cancellation alert, as Pennsylvania campers frequently free up sites in the two weeks before arrival.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Duncannon?
Driving an RV around Duncannon is mostly relaxed once you know the lay of the land. The main routes (US-11/15 along the Susquehanna and US-22/322) are wide, well-maintained four-lane highways perfect for big rigs, with truck-friendly grades. Watch for the Clarks Ferry Bridge just south of town (low traffic but worth taking slowly in wind) and the winding, hilly back roads through Tuscarora State Forest, which have tight curves and occasional 8 to 10 percent grades. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms, and fall can bring fog in the river valley early mornings. Pro tip: avoid downtown Duncannon's narrow Market Street with anything over 25 feet, and use the Newport or Marysville exits for easier RV access.
511pa.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Duncannon?
Campgrounds near Duncannon are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Most private parks like Riverfront Campground, Ferryboat Campsites, and Western Village RV Park offer 30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer full-hookups, plus on-site dump stations and potable water fill-ups. Pennsylvania state parks (Little Buffalo, Gifford Pinchot, Pine Grove Furnace) have a growing number of electric and full-hookup sites along with modern restrooms, hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Propane refills are easiest at Tractor Supply in Newport or the Sheetz on US-11/15. Cell coverage is solid near Harrisburg but spotty in the deeper Tuscarora State Forest sites. Pro tip: ask the campground if their dump station is open during your stay, and bring a 25-foot sewer hose just in case.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's included inside a typical Duncannon RV rental?

Many hosts also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and a backup camera. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in Perry County's hills, so many hosts add cellular hotspots. Generators are common on Class A and Class C rentals for off-grid weekends. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message your host about extras like a Blackstone griddle or kayaks, which many Duncannon hosts include free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Duncannon%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for an RV rental in Duncannon?

Mileage policies vary: some hosts offer unlimited mileage, others include 100 to 150 miles per day. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator if you're heading into Tuscarora State Forest, you'll get a turnkey adventure without juggling logistics.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Duncannon%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Duncannon?
Payment is simple and secure: when you book an RV rental in Duncannon, PA on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash to the host. Your trip total (rental, protection plan, taxes, any add-ons) is charged at booking, and a refundable security deposit (typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged unless there's an issue. The deposit is released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back clean, undamaged, and with a full fuel and propane tank. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and drop-off to make the deposit return effortless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my Duncannon RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, most RV rentals in Duncannon, PA can travel freely across state lines, and many hosts allow trips into Canada with advance approval, since RVezy's protection plan extends to cross-border travel when the host agrees. Popular multi-state RV road trips from Duncannon include Niagara Falls (about 290 miles north), Acadia National Park in Maine, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage limits. To take your rig into Canada, message the host before booking, bring your passport, and declare the RV at the border. Pro tip: ask your host for a written note confirming you have permission to drive the RV across the border, it makes crossings smoother.
