Campgrounds near Eldorado, Pennsylvania
Eldorado is a small community in Blair County on the south side of Altoona in central Pennsylvania. It sits in western Blair County along the southern border of Logan Township, at the base of the Allegheny Front, which rises to an elevation of 2,421 feet just over two miles to the west. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of both mountain state parks and lake recreation on the Raystown side of the ridge.
Camping options range from small private parks close to town to full-service RV resorts near larger recreation areas. Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade and Wrights Orchard Station Campground sit closest to Eldorado, while Glendale Valley Campground offers a rural setting a bit farther out. For public state park camping in the mountains, Blue Knob State Park is the nearest option to the west, sitting on a spur of the Allegheny Front in the northwestern tip of Bedford County.
For bigger-water trips, James Creek RV Resort places travelers near Raystown Lake, southeast of Eldorado, for boating and fishing-focused stays.
Things to do near Eldorado
Blue Knob State Park is the main outdoor draw west of town. The park covers 6,128 acres of woodland and sits on Blue Knob, the second highest mountain in Pennsylvania at 3,146 feet, with nearly 20 miles of hiking trails, a swimming pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and connections to the 26-mile Lost Turkey Trail. Cross-country skiing and other winter recreation are possible when snow allows.
Rail-history fans can visit the Horseshoe Curve just northwest of Eldorado, with a viewing platform and visitor center covering Pennsylvania railroad history. Trains still run along the curve, and unpaved trails wind around the site for walkers.
East of Eldorado, Raystown Lake offers boating, fishing, and swimming, with James Creek RV Resort set up as a base for lake-focused trips.

Public campgrounds in this part of Pennsylvania follow a spring-to-fall pattern with a hard winter shoulder. At Blue Knob State Park, the campground opens the second Friday in April and closes in mid-October, with 50 tent and trailer sites across open fields and wooded areas. The park cabins are available from the second Friday in April through the last weekend of October. Private RV parks around Altoona and Raystown generally run a longer season, though some close during the coldest months.
Elevation matters when planning. The elevation of Blue Knob can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than surrounding valley cities, and annual snowfall at the park averages about 12 feet. Even in shoulder seasons, expect cooler nights on the ridge than in the valleys around Altoona and Hollidaysburg.
Summer is peak season and books up fastest around holiday weekends and at lakefront resorts. Fall brings foliage on the Allegheny Front and cool nights well-suited to RVing, while spring can be wet with lingering snow at higher elevations.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

How to book campgrounds near Eldorado
State park sites at Blue Knob are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system, hosted on ReserveAmerica. Most campsites in Pennsylvania state parks can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, to noon of the day of arrival. Reservations can be made online or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday, 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Private parks such as James Creek RV Resort, Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade, Wrights Orchard Station Campground, and Glendale Valley Campground handle their own reservations directly by phone or website. Holiday weekends fill months out, so book early for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
In the summer peak season at Blue Knob, the cabins and house rent by the week only; in the non-peak season the minimum rental is two days. Confirm site length limits and hookup type before booking a larger rig.
What to expect on the ground
This is central-Pennsylvania mountain country, not a resort corridor. One of the unique features of Blue Knob State Park is the solitude it provides, with quiet mountain and stream settings. Expect wooded sites, winding two-lane approach roads, and steep grades near the ridge. Rigs with limited climbing power should plan routes carefully.
Cell service can be spotty in the state parks, so download the park map before arrival and bring paper directions as backup.
Hookup levels vary widely. At Blue Knob, sites are basic: most have electric service, and a sanitary dump station, water spigots, modern restrooms, and playground equipment are available on site, but individual sites do not have water or sewer hookups. Private resorts on the Raystown side offer fuller hookups, pools, and family programming.
