Elkland sits along the Cowanesque River in northern Tioga County, Pennsylvania, close to the New York state line and within the Pennsylvania Wilds region. The borough lies just off Route 49, which connects west to Westfield and east toward Lawrenceville and US Route 15, making it a practical staging point for RV travellers heading into the Pine Creek Valley and Pennsylvania Grand Canyon landscape.
Camping options within a short drive include Sunflower Acres Family Campground and Cardinal Campsite for private-park stays, plus Camp Bell Campground closer to the Wellsboro area. Families often base at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: PA Wilds near Mansfield, which offers full-hookup RV sites and structured kids' activities.
For a public-land experience, Hills Creek State Park sits about a 30 to 40 minute drive south. Located in scenic Tioga County, the 407-acre Hills Creek State Park abounds in wildlife, and camping, cabins, swimming, and picnicking make it an ideal spot for a family vacation. The US Army Corps of Engineers project at Cowanesque Lake adds another public option less than a mile from the New York border.
Things to do near Elkland
The signature draw in the area is the Pine Creek Gorge, known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, with rim views at Leonard Harrison State Park and the Turkey Path trail dropping to the Pine Creek Rail Trail on the canyon floor. The rail trail is a flat, family-friendly route popular for cycling.
Cowanesque Lake provides a 1,085-acre lake with 17 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing, and swimming, plus the 4 mile Moccasin Trail, which leads hikers on a trek through reclaimed farm fields and wood lots inhabited by a variety of watchable wildlife. Hills Creek Lake adds warmwater fishing, a sandy swim beach, and hiking trails within the park.
Downtown Wellsboro, about a 30 minute drive south, features a gas-lit Main Street and restaurants, and hosts the Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival in June, a week-long celebration featuring a juried arts and crafts fair, queen's pageant, parades, and live music.

Wellsboro, the nearest long-record climate station, has a humid continental climate with warm to hot summers and cold winters, and snow has been recorded in every month except July and August. Snowfall averages 60.6 inches per year and precipitation averages 42.27 inches per year. Most private and state park campgrounds run a mid-April to late-October season aligned with these conditions; the Hills Creek campground opens the second Friday in April and closes the last weekend in October.
Summer is peak camping season, with warm days, active lake use, and busy weekends around Independence Day and the Laurel Festival. Book early: weekly reservations are required at Hills Creek modern cabins during the summer, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: PA Wilds weekend sites fill quickly.
Spring brings cool, wet weather and stream flows attractive to anglers, while fall offers foliage across the Allegheny Plateau, quieter campgrounds, and cooler nights. Winter narrows options to the ten modern cabins at Hills Creek, which can be rented year round, along with ice fishing and cross-country skiing on park land.

We had an awesome experience renting Mikayla’s camper and would absolutely rent it again! From the first moment we spoke, to picking it up and dropping it off, everything was simple and stress-free. Hitching and unhitching were easy, and Mikayla had everything we needed for full hookups—sewer line, water hoses, water filter, and even a drill for the leveling jacks. What really impressed us was how well stocked the camper was. Plates, silverware, cooking supplies, sugar, cooking spray, beds with full linens, and towels—you could tell a lot of thought went into making sure guests had everything they needed. There was plenty of room for our family of four, and we had a fantastic camping trip. If you’re considering renting this camper, I highly recommend it!

How to book campgrounds near Elkland
Hills Creek State Park bookings go through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. In partnership with Timberline Glamping, DCNR is bringing glamping to Hills Creek State Park, and those tents are managed separately.
Tompkins Campground on the north shore of Cowanesque Lake is a federal facility, and all reservations must be made on www.recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777 prior to arrival. Private parks including Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: PA Wilds, Sunflower Acres Family Campground, Cardinal Campsite, and Camp Bell Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone.
For summer weekends, holiday periods, and foliage weeks in October, book several months out. Cancellation windows and fees vary by operator.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the area follow river valleys and can be winding. Some routes to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: PA Wilds are steep and gravel, and GPS routing has been known to send big rigs the wrong way, so confirm approach directions with the campground before arrival. Not all sites are level, and leveling blocks are useful.
Site types range from full-hookup RV pads at private parks and select loops at Hills Creek to more primitive tent and hike-in sites at nearby federal campgrounds. Modern washhouses with warm showers, restrooms, and water fountains are in central locations throughout the Hills Creek camping area, and a sanitary dump station is just outside.
Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so download the park map before your visit. At Hills Creek, pets are allowed on all sites in Campground Loops A and D and in Cabins 1, 2, and 3, but are not allowed in any other overnight areas.

Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to lock in your Elkland RV rental now. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you book, giving you breathing room to confirm dates with family or work. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Elkland?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome on plenty of trips. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Elkland, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who happily allow dogs (and often cats). Tioga County is wonderfully dog-friendly: leashed pets are welcome on the trails at Leonard Harrison State Park, throughout Tioga State Forest, and on the Pine Creek Rail Trail. Tompkins Campground at Cowanesque Lake also allows pets in designated loops. Pro tip: message the host through RVezy before booking to confirm any pet fee, then pack a long lead so your dog can safely enjoy the canyon rim views.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/PlanYourVisit/Pages/Pets-in-State-Parks.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Elkland?
Yes, RV delivery in Elkland is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a stress-free trip, especially for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts in Tioga County will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome to your campsite, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything so you can start relaxing immediately. Popular delivery destinations include Ives Run Campground at Tioga Lake, Tompkins Campground at Cowanesque Lake, Hills Creek State Park, and private parks like Stony Fork Creek Campground near Wellsboro. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite number to confirm the fee and arrival window.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234687How far can I drive on an Elkland RV trip, and are unlimited miles available?
You can absolutely plan a big loop from Elkland, and yes, some hosts offer RV rentals with unlimited mileage. Most listings include a generous daily mileage allotment (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that, while a growing number of hosts advertise unlimited miles for road trippers. Popular drives from Elkland include Wellsboro and the PA Grand Canyon (about 30 miles south), Watkins Glen State Park, NY (about 45 miles north), Corning Museum of Glass (about 40 miles northeast), and Cherry Springs State Park dark-sky area (about 55 miles west). Check the listing's mileage policy before booking.
visitpa.com/listing/pine-creek-gorge-(pa-grand-canyon)/224/What are the best campgrounds near Elkland, PA for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Elkland. Top picks within a 45-minute drive include Tompkins Campground at Cowanesque Lake (Army Corps of Engineers, full hookups, lake swimming, just west of Lawrenceville), Ives Run Campground at Tioga Lake (spacious sites, paved pads, marina access), Hills Creek State Park (wooded sites near a quiet lake about 25 miles south), Stony Fork Creek Campground near Wellsboro (great PA Grand Canyon basecamp), and Colton Point and Leonard Harrison State Parks on the canyon rims. Insider tip: Tompkins reopens for the season in late June and stays open into mid-October, perfect for fall foliage.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234687When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Elkland?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time, and each season has its own magic. May and June bring lush greenery, blooming mountain laurel (Pennsylvania's state flower), and daytime highs in the 65 to 78°F range, ideal for hiking the Turkey Path at Leonard Harrison State Park. July and August are warmest (highs in the low-to-mid 80s) and best for swimming at Cowanesque Lake. The real showstopper is late September through mid-October, when the Pine Creek Gorge erupts in red, gold, and orange. Winter trips are possible with a four-season RV, but most Tioga County campgrounds close by late October, so plan accordingly.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be ready to drive it out of Elkland?
Yes, and you'll be surprised how quickly it clicks. First time renting an RV in Elkland is genuinely easy because every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, the propane system, the generator, and dumping tanks. They'll answer every question, no rush. If you're nervous about backing into a site or driving a larger rig, choose a Class B campervan or smaller Class C, or simply book delivery so the host parks and sets up for you. The roads around Elkland are quiet and scenic, a forgiving place to build confidence behind the wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one call away for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. Your host is also a direct lifeline through the RVezy app for questions about quirks like the water heater or awning. Cell coverage in Elkland and along Route 6 is generally reliable, though it gets patchy deep in Tioga State Forest, so screenshot key info before heading into the canyon. RVezy's customer support team is also reachable before, during, and after every trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an Elkland RV rental into New York or other states?
Yes, cross-state travel is one of the best perks of renting from Elkland because you're literally a few miles from the New York border. Most hosts happily allow trips into New York for the Finger Lakes wineries, Watkins Glen, and Corning, as well as throughout the Northeast. Just confirm out-of-state travel with the host before booking through RVezy messaging. Important to know: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't cover it. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Elkland include Seneca Lake wine country (about 50 miles), Niagara Falls (about 150 miles), and the Adirondacks (about 4 hours northeast).
dot.ny.gov/indexWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how should I budget for gas?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip costs, but it's very plannable. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C motorhome rental in Elkland, 16 to 20 MPG for a Class B campervan rental in Elkland, and 12 to 18 MPG for your tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit higher than the national average; in 2026 budget around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon. The closest fuel stops are in Elkland and Westfield on Route 49, with larger truck-friendly stations in Mansfield and Lawrenceville. Pro tip: top off in Mansfield before heading deep into Tioga State Forest.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Elkland?
For summer weekends and fall foliage, book your campground as soon as your RV rental is confirmed, ideally 3 to 6 months ahead. Army Corps of Engineers sites at Tompkins (Cowanesque Lake) and Ives Run (Tioga Lake) are reserved through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling reservation window. Pennsylvania state parks like Hills Creek, Leonard Harrison, and Colton Point are booked through the DCNR reservation system up to 12 months in advance. Pro tip: midweek sites often have openings even in peak season, making last-minute Elkland RV trips very doable.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234687What are the driving conditions like around Elkland?
Driving around Elkland is a treat: light traffic, scenic two-lane roads, and gentle ridges rather than mountain switchbacks. US Route 15 (now part of I-99) runs north-south just east of town and is the easiest highway for big rigs, while PA Route 49 connects Elkland to Westfield and beyond. Watch for steep grades on PA Route 6 near the canyon overlooks and tight curves on back roads to Colton Point State Park. Winters bring snow and ice from December through March, so most renters stick to April through October. Deer are common at dawn and dusk year-round, so slow down on rural stretches.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Elkland?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a smooth RV experience. Tompkins Campground at Cowanesque Lake offers 52 full-hookup sites (electric, water, sewer), 31 electric-and-water sites, hot showers, a dump station, a swim beach, and a camp store. Ives Run at Tioga Lake adds 50-amp service and a marina. Pennsylvania state parks like Hills Creek and Leonard Harrison offer electric sites, modern bathhouses, and dump stations but typically no sewer hookups at the pad, so plan a dump-station stop on the way out. Potable water fill stations are clearly marked at each campground entrance. Cell signal is good at most sites.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234687What's inside a typical RV rental in Elkland?
You'll feel right at home from the first night. Most Elkland RV rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunks (sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted travel seats for safe driving. Many include a generator for boondocking, a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor speakers. Wi-Fi varies: a few hosts include a mobile hotspot, but cell-based internet is the norm. Pro tip: filter your search by Sleeps count on RVezy to make sure the layout fits your crew.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/hills-creek-state-park.htmlWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Elkland make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include kitchen and linen kits (typically $50 to $100), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayaks, generators, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Elkland, Westfield, Lawrenceville, or Wellsboro, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation included. Delivery and setup at a local campground often costs $2 to $4 per mile round trip, with a flat setup fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, from 100 miles per day to fully unlimited, so check the listing details. Pro tip: ask the host to throw in a Pine Creek Rail Trail map; many keep them on hand.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/colton-point-state-park.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and fully handled through RVezy, so there's no awkward cash handoff with the host. You pay your trip total with a credit or debit card when you book, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup (amounts vary by RV). The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the RV's interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff for a smooth final inspection.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Elkland for fall foliage and winter trips?
Yes, and fall is arguably the most spectacular time to rent an RV in Elkland. Peak foliage along the PA Grand Canyon typically hits late September through mid-October, when the canyon rims glow with red maples and golden birches. Many local campgrounds, including Tompkins at Cowanesque Lake, stay open into mid-October. For winter trips, look for hosts who list four-season or winterized RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power capable furnaces, since overnight lows can drop into the teens December through February. Insider tip: Cherry Springs State Park, about an hour west, offers some of the darkest skies in the eastern US for crisp winter stargazing.
