Campgrounds near Hometown, Pennsylvania
Hometown is a village and census-designated place in Rush Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, sitting at the crossroads of PA 54 and PA 309 in the state's northeastern Coal Region. The area places RV travelers within a short drive of two distinct outdoor zones: the Pocono Mountains to the east and the anthracite ridge country of Schuylkill County to the west.
Camping options range from state park sites to full-hookup private resorts. Locust Lake State Park, located in Schuylkill County, spans 1,089 acres and is surrounded by beautiful forests and picturesque hills, and is a popular destination for camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, and boating. Private parks in the surrounding area include Lakewood Park Campground, Rosemount Camping Resort, Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, and Red Ridge Lake Campgrounds, which typically add pools, playgrounds, and RV hookups not available at the state park.
The region sits north of the Lehigh Valley and Reading metropolitan areas, which keeps Hometown within reach for weekend renters from Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City while still offering forested, low-traffic camping.
Things to do near Hometown
The biggest draw is the Lehigh Gorge corridor to the east. The 6,107 acres of park land follow the Lehigh River from Francis E. Walter Dam in the north to Jim Thorpe in the south. This popular section of the Lehigh River contains class II to III whitewater rapids, winding through a deep, steep-walled gorge with thick vegetation, rock outcroppings, and waterfalls. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Francis E. Walter Dam performs releases for fishing and recreational whitewater opportunities, and these releases occur spring through fall.
Closer to Hometown, Locust Lake State Park anchors family activity. The park features a sandy beach open from late May to mid-September, with lifeguards on duty at scheduled times, and Locust Lake is known for trout fishing and is stocked seasonally. More than 6 miles of trails offer scenic views of the surrounding area.
Historic Jim Thorpe borough adds train rides, coal-mining museums, and restaurants a short drive from base camp.

Camping season here is not year-round at the state level. At Locust Lake State Park, the campground opens in early April and closes in mid-October, so travelers targeting shoulder seasons should confirm dates before booking. Private parks such as Lakewood Park Campground, Rosemount Camping Resort, Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, and Red Ridge Lake Campgrounds often run longer seasons and, in some cases, offer winter hookups.
Summer is peak. Weekends at Locust Lake and Jim Thorpe-area parks fill weeks in advance, and scheduled releases from Francis E. Walter Dam draw rafters and paddlers from spring through fall.
Fall brings peak foliage across the Pocono ridges through October, with cool nights and lighter crowds after Labor Day. In Hometown, the summers are warm and wet, the winters are freezing and snowy, and it is partly cloudy year round, so most tenters and casual RV renters concentrate their trips between April and October. Travelers should note that Locust Lake is currently undergoing facility upgrades, so confirm loop availability before booking.

How to book campgrounds in the area
State park sites use one reservation system. Most campsites can be reserved 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation website or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Pennsylvania opens reservations 11 months in advance at 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern Time, and popular weekends at Locust Lake State Park Campground, especially in July and August, are commonly claimed the moment the window opens.
Private resorts near Hometown, including Lakewood Park Campground, Rosemount Camping Resort, Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, and Red Ridge Lake Campgrounds, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends sell out earliest, so lock in dates before finalizing the RV rental.
Before arrival, confirm site length, hookup type (30 vs 50 amp), and whether the loop accepts pets, since those details vary loop by loop.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded, hilly terrain. Locust Lake State Park offers 282 wooded campsites surrounding a 52-acre lake, and the campground is divided into two distinct areas: tent-only sites on the north side of the lake, and mixed tent and trailer sites on the south side. All campsites feature parking pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and cleared areas for camping equipment.
Amenities include potable drinking water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, trash collection, and a dump station. Private resorts in the area typically add pools, laundry, Wi-Fi, and full-hookup pads suited to larger rentals.
A few practical notes: cell service is fair in the area, so download park maps in advance. Fires are only permitted in grills and fire rings, and complete fire bans are possible during dry periods.
