Camping near Howard, Pennsylvania
Howard sits in Centre County along the Bald Eagle Valley of north-central Pennsylvania, immediately adjacent to Bald Eagle State Park and the Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir. The park centers on a large lake managed cooperatively by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Pennsylvania's Bureau of State Parks, giving RV travelers direct access to boating, swimming, and lakeside camping.
The area is well positioned for a Pennsylvania road trip. Bald Eagle State Park, in Centre County, lies along PA Route 150 between Milesburg and Lock Haven, reachable from the west via I-80 Exit 158 and PA Route 150 north for about 10 miles. State College and Penn State University are roughly a half-hour drive away, and Bellefonte and Lock Haven are within easy reach for groceries, fuel, and dining.
Campground choices near Howard range from state-park sites to private RV parks and a fairground. Bald Eagle State Park is the closest anchor property, with Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday, Gram and Paps Fort Bellefonte Campground, Centre County Grange Fairgrounds, and Hemlock Acres Camping Area providing additional options south and east of town.
Things to do around Howard
Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir is the main draw, supporting fishing, boating, and swimming. A sand and turf beach at Bald Eagle State Park is open through the warm months, and a Pennsylvania fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
On land, miles of trails cross the park's forests, fields, and wetlands, and the area is known for bald eagle sightings and general wildlife watching. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during established seasons.
Off-park, families can drive into State College for Penn State campus visits and museums, or into Bellefonte for a historic downtown. In winter, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and ice skating are common when conditions allow.

The main camping season at Bald Eagle State Park runs from the second Friday of April through mid-December, after the close of deer season. Outside those dates the Russell P. Letterman Campground, its cottages, and yurts are closed, and lake-based activities wind down as temperatures drop and ice forms.
Late spring and early summer bring the best weather for RVing, with warm days, active wildlife, and full lake access. The beach is open through the summer, making June through August the busiest window for family trips. Sites near the beach and marina fill quickly on summer weekends and holidays.
Fall is quieter and cooler, with foliage through October and reduced crowds. Hunting seasons pick up in November and early December, so campers should expect hunter traffic in the surrounding state game lands and in Bald Eagle State Forest. Winter camping options in the immediate area are limited, though the park itself stays open for day use.
How to book a campsite near Howard
Bald Eagle State Park campsite reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania state park reservation system, either online or by phone. Phone reservations go through the Pennsylvania State Parks Reservation Center at 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757). Full payment must be received within ten days of making the reservation for it to be confirmed. Cell service can be unpredictable inside the park, so confirm bookings before arriving.
Private options book through their own systems. Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday, Gram and Paps Fort Bellefonte Campground, and Hemlock Acres Camping Area take direct reservations, and Centre County Grange Fairgrounds handles bookings tied to its event calendar. For Penn State football weekends and the annual Grange Fair in August, book several months out.
What to expect on the ground
At Bald Eagle State Park's Russell P. Letterman Campground, each campsite has a paved parking spur, picnic table, and fire ring. Electric hookups of 30 amps are available at most sites, some campsites have 50-amp hookups, and some sites offer full service hookup with sewer, water, and electricity. Hot showers and a sanitary dump station are on site, along with the park amphitheater, two volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits. A primitive area with rustic restrooms and drinking water along the road serves tent campers and smaller rigs.
Outside the state park, expect a mix of full-hookup RV parks, seasonal sites, and fairground-style overflow camping. Firewood is generally available on site or nearby. Cell coverage varies by carrier and can drop in valleys, so download park maps and directions before leaving State College or the I-80 corridor.

Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from abroad? You choose your coverage level at checkout to match how much protection you want for physical damage during your trip. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, covering things like flat tires, lockouts, and towing. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Howard, PA trip plans change?
Booking is lower-risk than you might think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts, and every booking includes a grace period right after you book during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels, guests receive a refund or travel credit. You will see the exact terms during checkout. Pro tip: book your RV first, then your Bald Eagle State Park campsite, since state park reservations have their own separate policy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Howard, PA?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every pet-friendly RV rental Howard PA hosts have available, and message the host beforehand to confirm any pet deposit or cleaning fee. Bald Eagle State Park welcomes leashed pets at designated pet-friendly campsites in the Russell P. Letterman Campground, and dogs are allowed on most park trails. Pets are not permitted on the swimming beach or inside park cabins and yurts. Pro tip: bring a long lead so your dog can lounge near your hookup site while you fire up the grill.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/bald-eagle-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered directly to my campsite in Howard?
Yes, and it is one of the smartest ways to do your first Howard, PA RV trip. Many RVezy hosts in the Howard, Bellefonte, and State College area offer RV delivery, meaning they will tow the rig to your reserved site at Bald Eagle State Park, the Bellefonte / State College KOA, or Fort Bellefonte Campground, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. You skip the stress of towing, and you start your trip already set up at the lake. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see available hosts, then message them with your campsite number. Pro tip: ask about pickup service at trip's end too.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037945794-Delivery-optionsHow do mileage policies work, and how far can I drive from Howard?
Hosts set their own mileage allowance, and you will see it on each listing, so there are no surprises. Many Howard-area hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, which is plenty for a classic RV camping Howard PA weekend looping Bald Eagle Lake, Penns Cave, and downtown Bellefonte. Planning a bigger road trip from Howard? Some hosts offer unlimited mileage packages or add-on bundles for longer hauls, with additional miles typically running about $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: if you are heading to the Pine Creek Gorge (the 'Pennsylvania Grand Canyon') about 90 miles north or Pittsburgh about 140 miles west, message the host before booking to lock in an unlimited-mileage RV rental package upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038108774-Understanding-mileageWhere are the best campgrounds near Howard, PA for my RV?
You are spoiled for choice. The standout is Bald Eagle State Park's Russell P. Letterman Campground in Howard itself, with around 100 sites, full-hookup options in select loops, 30/50-amp service, flush toilets, hot showers, and direct access to the 1,730-acre Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir. The park also offers primitive camping on the north shore that is quieter and more wooded. About ten minutes south, the Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday offers a heated pool, jumping pillow, and full hookups in the Appalachian foothills. Nearby, Fort Bellefonte Campground has RV sites with full-hookup options. Pro tip: lake-view loops at Bald Eagle book up first, so reserve early.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/bald-eagle-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Howard, PA in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV trip in Howard, PA. June and September are arguably the best: highs in the 70s, lower humidity, fewer bugs than July, and great conditions on Bald Eagle Lake. July brings the warmest weather with average highs in the low 80s, perfect for swimming at the park beach, while late September into mid-October delivers strong fall foliage across Bald Eagle Mountain. Winter is cold here with January average lows around the high teens and regular snow, so the state park's modern campground closes for the season in late fall and reopens in early to mid-April. Pro tip: book mid-September for foliage plus open swim beaches.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=41.0114&lon=-77.6573I am a first-time RV renter. Will I actually know what I am doing?
Yes, and you are in great company because Howard sees many first-time renters every season. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, propane, slide-outs, water systems, awning, and dump procedures so nothing is a mystery before you pull away. You can message the host any time during your trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away if you need it. Most first-timers in the Bald Eagle Valley choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer because they drive like a big van or pull behind an SUV. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery to Bald Eagle State Park so your first night is zero-stress.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down on my Howard RV trip?
You are covered 24/7, no matter where you are in the Bald Eagle Valley. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes around-the-clock roadside assistance for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues, so one phone call gets help dispatched to your location on PA-150, I-80, or inside the state park. Your host is also a second line of support and usually responds quickly via the RVezy app. Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-80 corridor and around Howard. Pro tip: before you leave the host's driveway, save the RVezy roadside number in your phone and snap a photo of the rig's VIN and license plate.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Howard, PA?
Howard's location in north-central Pennsylvania makes it a fantastic launchpad for a multi-stop RV road trip. Top picks: Pine Creek Gorge (the 'Pennsylvania Grand Canyon') and Leonard Harrison State Park are about 90 miles north, roughly two hours via US-220. Cherry Springs State Park, one of the darkest night-sky destinations on the East Coast, is about 90 miles north. Ricketts Glen State Park with its 21 named waterfalls sits about 100 miles east. Pittsburgh is about 140 miles southwest via I-80, and Niagara Falls is a doable run north. Cross-border travel into Canada is generally allowed with host approval, while Mexico trips are not covered. Pro tip: chain Bald Eagle, Cherry Springs, and Pine Creek into a 4-night loop.
visitpa.com/regions/pennsylvania-wildsWhat fuel costs should I budget for my Howard RV trip?
Realistic fuel budgeting makes your trip smoother. Most Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 MPG, Class A coaches around 6 to 8 MPG, and Class B campervans 14 to 18 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the U.S. national average, with diesel a little higher than regular. For a typical 200-mile weekend looping Bald Eagle Lake and Bellefonte, expect to spend roughly $70 to $110 on fuel in a Class C, depending on current prices. The closest fuel stops are in Mill Hall, Bellefonte, and at the I-80 / US-220 interchange. Pro tip: top off in Bellefonte before heading deep into the state park, as Howard has limited fueling options.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Howard?
For peak summer weekends at Bald Eagle State Park, book as early as you can. Pennsylvania State Parks reservations open up to 11 months in advance through the DCNR reservation system at pa.gov. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends in the Russell P. Letterman Campground are often fully reserved months ahead. For midweek stays or shoulder season (April-May and late September-October), you can often grab a site just a few days out. The Bellefonte / State College KOA and Fort Bellefonte Campground take reservations directly through their websites and tend to have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: book your campsite first, then your RV on RVezy, since the campground reservation is the harder one to secure in summer.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/state-parks/reserve-a-campsite-or-facility.htmlWhat are the driving conditions like around Howard, PA?
Driving conditions around Howard are very RV-friendly for the most part. Interstate 80 runs just south of town with easy access at the US-220 / PA-150 interchange, and PA-150 to the state park is a wide, well-maintained two-lane road with gentle grades. Expect rolling Appalachian terrain, some curves, and occasional steep grades on backroads heading toward Snow Shoe or Pine Creek, so take it slow in larger rigs. Winters bring snow and ice from December through March, which is why most local hosts limit cold-weather rentals. Watch for deer year-round, especially at dawn and dusk. Pro tip: stick to the PA-150 and US-220 corridors in big Class A coaches and avoid narrow side roads.
511pa.com/What amenities do campgrounds near Howard offer, and where can I dump or refill water?
You will find solid hookup options across the board. Russell P. Letterman Campground at Bald Eagle State Park has full-hookup sites (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) in some loops, water-and-electric in others, hot showers, flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station that is free for registered campers. Primitive areas have potable water spigots, vault toilets, and access to the main dump station. The Bellefonte / State College KOA and Fort Bellefonte Campground both offer full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. The closest propane refills are in Bellefonte and Lock Haven. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water-safe hose so shared spigots reach comfortably.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/bald-eagle-state-park.htmlWhat is inside the RVs available for rent in Howard, PA?
More comfort than you would expect. A typical motorhome rental in Howard, PA on RVezy includes a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with refrigerator/freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette and couch that often convert to extra beds, roof-mounted air conditioning, propane furnace for chilly Bald Eagle Mountain nights, and a TV. Class C motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 7 with seatbelts for everyone, and many include an onboard generator for off-grid use at the primitive campground. Travel trailers offer similar features minus the cab. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6+' for family RV trip Howard PA setups.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Howard%2C+PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons can I get with my Howard, PA RV rental?
Plenty, and they make life easier. Popular add-ons from Howard-area RVezy hosts include camping chair and table bundles, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits with cookware and dishes, bikes and kayaks for Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir, generators for the state park's primitive sites, portable grills, and even fishing gear. Prices typically range from $15 to $50 per item or per day depending on the add-on. Many hosts also offer delivery to Bald Eagle State Park, the Bellefonte / State College KOA, or Fort Bellefonte Campground for a flat fee based on distance. Pickup and dropoff are usually flexible between 10 AM and 4 PM. Pro tip: ask your host to throw in a kayak or paddleboard. The 1,730-acre lake right outside your door is built for it.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Howard%2C+PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure, all handled through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to a host. You pay the rental total plus the protection plan and service fee at checkout with a credit or debit card. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is placed as a hold on your card before pickup. As long as you return the campervan rental in Howard, PA in the agreed condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after trip completion. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with the host at both pickup and dropoff to keep everything smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Howard, PA during winter for a snow trip?
Yes, winter rentals are possible, though more limited. Some RVezy hosts in the Howard and State College area keep their rigs available November through March for ice fishing on Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir, snowshoeing in Bald Eagle State Forest, and skiing nearby at Tussey Mountain (about 30 miles south). Look for listings that mention heated holding tanks, an enclosed or insulated underbelly, and a strong propane furnace, then confirm cold-weather readiness with the host before booking. Note that Bald Eagle State Park's modern campground closes in late fall and reopens in spring, so winter overnighters usually stay at private parks like Fort Bellefonte or use the rig as a basecamp on a host's property. Pro tip: ask the host for shore-power tips and tank-heater settings during your walkthrough.
