Campgrounds and RV parks near Lemont, PA

The Mount Nittany trailhead is in Lemont itself, and the ridge is the area's signature day hike, giving broad views over Happy Valley. Penn State's University Park campus, Beaver Stadium, the Bryce Jordan Center, and The Arboretum at Penn State are all a short drive west. Families staying at Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday have on-site recreation plus quick access to Penn's Cave and nearby state parks. The KOA offers a splash pad, a stocked fishing pond, two playgrounds, a sports area, a jumping pillow, and a bike park, and its Patio RV sites include a grill and a built-in fire pit. For history and small-town stops, Bellefonte's Victorian downtown, Talleyrand Park, and the historic train station are within about 20 minutes. Rothrock State Forest surrounds Greenwood Furnace State Park with trails for hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing.

The camping season in this part of central Pennsylvania runs roughly mid-April through mid-November. At Greenwood Furnace State Park, 49 tent and trailer sites plus 2 walk-in sites open on the second Friday in April and close in mid-November, with 44 sites offering electric hookups. Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday operates on a similar spring-through-late-fall schedule; confirm current dates with the campground before booking. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, an active pool at the KOA, and long evenings. Fall brings foliage across the ridges of Rothrock State Forest and the Seven Mountains, along with Penn State home football weekends that can book out area campgrounds well in advance. KOA reservations over Penn State Parent's Weekend and home football games have stricter cancellation windows, typically requiring two weeks' notice for RV and tent sites and four weeks for cabins. Spring is cool and often wet, with trails muddy but crowds light. State College averages roughly 42 inches of precipitation and about 44 inches of snow per year, and most private and state-park campgrounds close for winter, so December through March trips are limited.

Site types vary widely across the area. Greenwood Furnace is a traditional state-park campground with electric-only sites at most spots and one full-hookup host site. A modern shower house has flush toilets, warm showers, and dishwashing sinks, and a sanitary dump station is located at the campground entrance. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in Pennsylvania State Parks. The KOA is the more amenity-heavy option, with RV sites, tent sites, and cabins, a heated pool open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, and a range of family activities. It sits on more than 70 acres in the Appalachian foothills near Bellefonte. Cell service can be spotty in the surrounding mountains and state forests, so downloading maps before the visit is recommended. Ridge-and-valley terrain means some approach roads are winding, and big-rig drivers should confirm site length and access before arrival.
