Campgrounds near Morrisdale, Pennsylvania
Morrisdale sits in Clearfield County on the Allegheny Plateau in west-central Pennsylvania, surrounded by the working forestland of the Moshannon State Forest. It serves as a base for two nearby state parks and several private campgrounds, all within a short drive of Interstate 80 and Pennsylvania Route 504.
Black Moshannon State Park lies east of Philipsburg on PA Route 504, centered on Black Moshannon Lake and largely surrounded by the Moshannon State Forest. To the north, Simon B Elliott State Park sits in Clearfield County off Pennsylvania Route 153, just north of Exit 111 of Interstate 80, nine miles north of the community of Clearfield. Woodland Campground, Lauder Family Campground, and Elk Crossing 555 Campground round out the private options in the area.
The terrain is high plateau country with mixed hardwood forest, small lakes, bogs, and creeks. The lake at Black Moshannon sits at an elevation near 1,900 feet, which keeps summer temperatures cooler than in the lowlands and produces meaningful snowfall in winter.
Things to do near Morrisdale
Water recreation centers on the 250-acre Black Moshannon Lake. The park offers fishing, boating, and swimming, and boats with electric motors are allowed on the lake. A sandy swim beach is open from late spring into mid-September, and boat rentals operate in the summer months.
Hiking is the other main draw. The Allegheny Front Trail is roughly a 42-mile loop through the Moshannon State Forest that encircles Black Moshannon State Park, and the park itself has more than 20 miles of trails for hikers of varied skill levels. Birding is strong around the park's bogs and wetlands, with rare boreal species recorded on the plateau.
At Simon B Elliott State Park, activity is quieter and more forested. About three miles of trails loop through the park, and the connecting Quehanna Trail opens up much more extensive backcountry hiking. Hunting is permitted in designated sections of both parks in season.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October. Summer brings warm days, cool nights, and the fullest campgrounds; weekends at Black Moshannon fill early. Spring and fall bring mild weather and lighter crowds, with fall foliage typically strongest in early to mid-October on the plateau.
Shoulder-season planning matters because facilities open and close on set dates. The Simon B Elliott campground is open from early May through October, while its six rustic CCC-era cabins are available for rent year round. Black Moshannon operates its main campground on a longer season, and its cottages, cabins, and yurts are available outside the tent-and-RV window as well.
Winter is cold and snowy. Black Moshannon draws cross-country skiers, and Simon B Elliott serves as a starting point for snowmobiling into the surrounding state forest. Standard RVs are not well suited to the area from December through March; renters wanting a cold-weather trip should book a heated cabin instead.
How to book a campsite
Pennsylvania state parks use a single central reservation system operated through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks Reservation System, available online or by phone. Bookings can also be made by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday.
Reservations must be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months out. Popular summer weekends at Black Moshannon State Park, especially electric sites and the cottages, tend to sell out soon after the 11-month window opens.
Private campgrounds such as Woodland Campground, Lauder Family Campground, and Elk Crossing 555 Campground book directly with the operator. Contact each campground to confirm site type, hookups, rig-length limits, and pet policies before arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Facilities vary sharply between the two state parks. Black Moshannon has 73 campsites suitable for tents or trailers, each with a picnic table and fire ring, and many sites have electric hookups while a small number offer full hookups. The campground provides modern restrooms, hot showers, and a sanitary dump station, plus cottages, modern cabins, and yurts.
Simon B Elliott is more rustic. The 25-site camping area, across from the log cabin Pennsylvania Center, offers modern restrooms with no showers and a sanitary dump station. There is no electricity or full hookup at these sites, and the six rustic CCC-era cabins are booked separately.
Quiet hours, pet rules, and firewood restrictions apply in both parks. To help protect the forest from invasive pests, bringing firewood into Pennsylvania is prohibited; use local firewood and burn all of it before departure. Cell service on the plateau is spotty, so download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving town.
