Campgrounds near Newport, Pennsylvania
Newport sits in Perry County along the Juniata River, roughly 25 miles northwest of Harrisburg. The surrounding area combines wooded ridges, farmland, and river frontage, giving RV travelers a mix of state park camping and private full-hookup options within a short drive of town.
The closest public option is Little Buffalo State Park, a 923-acre Pennsylvania state park in Perry County located about a mile southwest of Newport just off Pennsylvania Route 34. Private choices along the rivers include Ferryboat Campsites and Lake Heron Retreat in Liverpool, Buttonwood Campground in the Juniata River Valley, and Camp Hebron in Halifax.
Most properties in the area cater to families and accommodate RVs with electric, water, and sewer hookups, alongside tent sites and cabins. Riverfront camping on the Susquehanna and Juniata is a defining feature of the region, and the Appalachian Trail corridor is within reach for hikers using an RV as a base.
Things to do around Newport
Little Buffalo State Park centers on an 88-acre lake with swimming at a designated beach, boat rentals, and fishing for bass, catfish, and trout. Historic attractions include Shoaff's Mill, a restored grist mill, and a covered bridge, and over eight miles of trails wind through the surrounding forest.
Along the Susquehanna, Ferryboat Campsites provides direct river access for tubing, fishing, and kayaking near the historic Millersburg Ferry crossing. Buttonwood Campground offers floats down the Juniata River along with campfires and family activities.
Camp Hebron adds a lighted sand volleyball court, basketball half court, large playing field, playground equipment, and seasonal access to a swimming pool, along with hiking on 340 wooded acres beside the Appalachian Trail. Lake Heron Retreat centers on a small lake for fishing and paddling.

Camping in the Newport area is primarily a warm-weather activity. Little Buffalo State Park's modern campground is open from mid-April through the third Sunday in October, and private parks generally follow a similar window. Camp Hebron's campground is open from mid-April to mid-October, aligning with regional norms.
Spring brings cool nights, budding hardwoods, and higher river flows. Low-lying areas can experience high water during spring runoff or heavy rains, and storms with heavy rain in the area can make the rivers rise, which occasionally affects sites at riverfront properties like Ferryboat Campsites and Buttonwood. Summer is peak season, with warm, humid days and busy weekends around holidays and themed events.
Fall delivers the region's best foliage, typically peaking in mid to late October, along with cooler nights and lighter crowds. Winter closures are the norm at both state and private campgrounds; travelers arriving December through March should confirm which sites, cabins, and dump stations remain accessible before heading out.

Sandy went above and beyond. Leading up to the rental dates she was in communication, making sure we were on the same page. I opted for delivery rather than pickup, and she made sure the rv was delivered early so we could fully enjoy the rental dates. We had a normal issue w the AC (the unit froze) but she was very communicative and helpful until the problem was solved (she suggested to turn it to fan in case the unit was frozen, and it quickly thawed). Always very sweet and courteous, always responsive. My four year old son loved the trailer, was very upset to understand that we had to give it back 😂. Thanks, Sandy!

How to book campgrounds near Newport
Sites at Little Buffalo State Park are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, with new inventory releasing at noon Eastern time. Bookings can also be arranged by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757).
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings directly. Ferryboat Campsites, Buttonwood Campground, Lake Heron Retreat, and Camp Hebron each accept reservations through their websites or by phone, and summer weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill early.
RV travelers should confirm site length, hookup type, and rig restrictions before booking. Camp Hebron requires a minimum of 2 nights and a maximum of 10 consecutive nights, and other properties enforce similar minimums on holiday weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Expect wooded, rolling terrain with a mix of gravel and grass sites. Little Buffalo's 46-site modern campground offers primitive walk-to sites, standard electric sites, and full-service sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, and every site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Sites are arranged on gravel paths with a steeper section near sites 32, 34, and 36, so larger rigs should call ahead for site guidance. A sanitary dump station is on site.
Private parks tend to run tighter site spacing. Sites at Camp Hebron sit close together with minimal separation, and the property regularly hosts large groups of children arriving by bus during peak times. Camp Hebron's campground is pet and alcohol free, which is unusual for the area. Cell service is spotty in the valleys, and train noise carries at riverfront sites along the Susquehanna and Juniata corridors.
