Camping near Nittany, Pennsylvania
Nittany sits in the Nittany Valley of central Pennsylvania, in Centre County, ringed by ridges of the Ridge and Valley region and close to the Bald Eagle State Forest. The area is a practical base for RV travelers heading to Penn State, Bellefonte, and the trout streams and reservoirs of the Bald Eagle drainage.
The closest full-service state park camping is at Bald Eagle State Park, a 5,900-acre park along PA 150 between Milesburg and Lock Haven with a 1,730-acre lake at its center. Private RV options in the surrounding valley include Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday, Gram and Paps Fort Bellefonte Campground, and Hemlock Acres Camping Area, all within a short drive of Nittany.
Event campers should note the Centre County Grange Fairgrounds, a fixture in nearby Centre Hall that hosts the Grange Fair and other large gatherings each year. Terrain is rolling farmland broken by long, forested ridges, with sites generally sitting between roughly 800 and 1,400 feet in elevation.
Things to do around Nittany
Water recreation centers on Foster Joseph Sayers Reservoir inside Bald Eagle State Park, which supports boating, swimming, and fishing. A Pennsylvania fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. The park has more than 14.5 miles of trails through varied habitats, and its 1,200-foot sand and turf beach is open from late May to mid-September, though lifeguards are not provided.
Wildlife watching is a draw, with a wide variety of bird species including the park's namesake bald eagle. Families staying at Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday can use the on-site heated pool and splash pad, jumping pillow, bike park, playgrounds, and stocked fishing pond without leaving the campground.
Off-site, Penn State's campus, downtown Bellefonte, and Penn's Cave are all within a short drive.

The main camping season at Bald Eagle State Park runs from the second Friday in April through the end of deer season in mid-December, when the Russell P. Letterman Campground, its yurts, and its camping cottages are open. Outside that window, the park itself remains open sunrise to sunset year-round, but overnight facilities close.
Spring brings frequent rain and cool nights but also active birding and generally open sites. Summer is warm and humid with the busiest weekends around holidays and Penn State events, and reservations for July and August fill early. The Grange Fair week in August drives heavy demand at the Centre County Grange Fairgrounds and surrounding private parks.
Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler temperatures, foliage across the ridges, and Penn State football weekends that book out RV parks in Bellefonte and State College far in advance. Late season stays should account for frost and the mid-December closing of state park overnight facilities.
How to book
Sites at Bald Eagle State Park are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation system online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), available Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. The booking window opens up to 11 months in advance, released at noon Eastern Time, and reservations can be made through to noon of the day of arrival.
Nearby state forest campsites in the Bald Eagle State Forest use the same reservation system and the same 11-month window. Private options such as Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday, Gram and Paps Fort Bellefonte Campground, and Hemlock Acres Camping Area are booked directly with the operators; Penn State football weekends and Grange Fair week should be booked months in advance.
What to expect on-site
Bald Eagle State Park has two campgrounds. The modern Russell P. Letterman Campground offers 30-amp electric at most sites, 50-amp at a smaller number of sites, some full-hookup sites, a dump station, hot showers, and two yurts. The Primitive Camping Area has walk-to tent sites and sites for camping vehicles with drinking water along the road and non-flush restrooms. Check-in is 3:00 p.m. and check-out is 10:00 a.m.
Bellefonte / State College KOA Holiday sits on roughly 70 acres with full-hookup sites offering 30 and 50 amp service, pull-throughs listed to a 120-foot maximum length, a dump station, Wi-Fi, laundry, and family-style bathhouses. The site is built into a hillside, so travelers should expect some grading and gravel roads.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in the Nittany Valley but can drop in the forested ridges.

Travel trailers typically run $90 to $150 per night, campervans average $150 to $225, and Class C motorhomes generally fall between $200 and $325 nightly. Pro tip: midweek shoulder-season trips in late May or September deliver gorgeous Nittany Valley weather at the lowest prices of the year.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parksDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Nittany, PA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Nittany. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and virtually every RV available on RVezy in the Nittany area falls comfortably under that threshold. You must be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your identity through the platform during checkout, so there's nothing extra to mail or upload at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to roll toward Mount Nittany.
pa.gov/agencies/penndot/driver-vehicle-services/driver-licensing/classes-of-licensesWhat's included for protection and peace of mind on my Nittany RV rental?
Every Nittany RV trip booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan with 24/7 roadside assistance built into the reservation, so you're never out there alone. At checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, and the plan helps cover eligible damage to the RV so a small mishap on a winding Centre County backroad won't ruin your vacation. Roadside help is one phone call away whether you're parked near Beaver Stadium, exploring Bald Eagle State Forest, or pulled over on I-80. Pro tip: review the protection options carefully at booking so you start your motorhome rental in Nittany with total confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Nittany trip plans change?
You can book with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy on every reservation. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and the refund amount after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. That flexibility matters in Central PA, where a surprise November snowstorm or a sudden Penn State schedule change can shift plans quickly. The full details are in your booking confirmation and the RVezy Help Center, so you always know where you stand. Pro tip: book early to secure your dates for an RV rental in Nittany, knowing the cancellation policy has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Nittany?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts welcome pets on RVezy. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Nittany, flip on the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and message the host to share your dog's size and any quirks. Once you arrive, your pup will be in heaven: Mount Nittany's trails allow leashed dogs, and Bald Eagle State Park welcomes leashed pets in designated pet-friendly campsite loops. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and a towel for muddy paws after Centre County hikes, and your four-legged co-pilot will be set for the whole trip.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/BaldEagleStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Nittany?
Yes, RV delivery in Nittany is one of the easiest ways to start a stress-free trip, especially if you're a first-time renter. Many hosts in the Centre County and Nittany Valley area will drive the RV directly to your campsite at places like Bald Eagle State Park or the Bellefonte / State College KOA, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts offering this service, then message them for an exact quote based on mileage. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer for Penn State football weekends when towing in heavy traffic around Beaver Stadium is the last thing you want to do.

Letterman Campground with full-hookup and modern sites along 1,730-acre Sayers Lake. Penn's Cave area and Reeds Gap State Park round out the local favorites. Pro tip: for Penn State home football weekends, Grange Fair RV camping in Centre Hall (about 12 miles from Beaver Stadium) is a popular overnight option.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/BaldEagleStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Nittany?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot for an RV trip in Nittany, with the peak being mid-September through mid-October when Nittany Valley fall foliage explodes in red and gold. Summer (June through August) brings warm 80s F days, lush green ridgelines, and lively events like the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in July. Spring temperatures climb from the 50s to the 70s with wildflowers and Mountain Laurel (the state flower) blooming on Mount Nittany. Winter is chilly (often 20s to 30s F with snow), but a handful of hosts offer winter-ready rigs for snow-tubing trips to nearby Tussey Mountain. Pro tip: avoid Penn State home football Saturdays unless that's your goal, hotels and campgrounds fill months ahead.
weather.gov/ctp/What if it's my first time renting an RV in the Nittany area?
You're going to do great, first time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in the Nittany area where roads are gentle and hosts are famously friendly. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through the propane, water, generator, slide-outs, and dump procedure, and you can message them anytime during your trip. Most first-timers in Centre County choose a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer, both of which drive much like a large SUV. Pro tip: do a shakedown night at the Bellefonte / State College KOA before heading deeper into Bald Eagle State Forest, you'll feel like a pro by morning and be ready for the Mid State Trail the next day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nittany,%20PennsylvaniaWhat happens if I have a roadside issue during my Nittany RV trip?
Help is always one phone call away, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so you're covered for things like flat tires, lockouts, battery jumps, and towing. If something more complex pops up while you're winding along US 322 near Lewistown or climbing the Seven Mountains, contact RVezy support and your host, and they'll coordinate next steps quickly. Cell service is solid along the major corridors (I-80, US 322, US 220) but can drop in pockets of Bald Eagle State Forest, so download offline maps before you leave. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and the roadside number at pickup so you have it ready if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Nittany?
An RV road trip from Nittany puts you within easy reach of some of the best scenery in the Northeast. Head southeast on US 322 to Hershey (about 90 miles, 2 hours) for chocolate and theme park fun, then continue to Lancaster's Amish country (another hour). Drive north on US 15 to Williamsport (about 60 miles) for Little League World Series history, then up to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon at Pine Creek Gorge. South on I-99 takes you to Raystown Lake (about 75 miles), the largest lake entirely in PA. Pro tip: a 5 to 7 day loop combining Nittany, Pine Creek Gorge, and Raystown Lake hits three iconic outdoor destinations with very manageable driving days.
visitpa.com/region/pennsylvania-wildsWhat kind of fuel costs should I budget for my Nittany RV trip?
Budgeting fuel for your Nittany RV trip is straightforward once you know the rough miles-per-gallon (MPG) for your rig. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but drop your truck's MPG to about 10 to 13. Campervans (Class B) get 16 to 20 MPG, Class C motorhomes deliver 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a touch above the national average, so plan on roughly $3.50 to $4.00 per gallon when you budget. Pro tip: Sheetz and Rutter's stations across Centre County have big lanes friendly to RVs, and you'll find competitive diesel pricing at the truck-side pumps just off I-80 exits 158 and 161.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Nittany?
For most weekends, 2 to 3 months out is plenty for campgrounds near Nittany, but lock in earlier for peak events. Pennsylvania state parks (including Bald Eagle and Reeds Gap) take reservations up to 12 months ahead through the official DCNR reservation system. Penn State home football weekends, Arts Fest in July, and October foliage Saturdays sell out fast, so aim for the full window for those dates. Private parks like the KOAs in New Columbia and Bellefonte typically open a similar window. Pro tip: if your top campground is full, set a cancellation alert and check back, mid-week openings appear surprisingly often as plans shift.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Nittany, PA?
Driving conditions in the Nittany area are RV-friendly with a few mountain quirks to know. Interstate 80 (east-west) and US 322 (the main route to State College) are wide, well-maintained, and easy for any RV size. The Seven Mountains stretch of US 322 between State College and Lewistown has a long downhill grade where you'll want to use a lower gear and engine braking. Rural backroads in Penns Valley are narrow but lightly trafficked. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so check 511PA before you roll. Pro tip: avoid driving in or out of State College on Penn State home game days, traffic backs up for miles, and a Friday-afternoon arrival or Sunday mid-morning departure makes life much easier.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Nittany?
Campgrounds near Nittany offer a great mix of full-service convenience and rustic charm. Private parks like Williamsport South / Nittany Mountain KOA and Bellefonte / State College KOA feature full hookups (water, sewer, 30 and 50 amp electric), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, pools, and dump stations on-site. Pennsylvania state parks such as Bald Eagle (Russell P. Letterman Campground) have a mix of full-hookup, modern (electric with nearby flush toilets and warm showers), and rustic sites. For boondocking, you'll find public dump stations at most state parks for a small fee, and potable water fills are clearly marked. Pro tip: arrive with full fresh water and empty tanks so you can stay off-grid a night or two if you fall in love with a remote forest spot.

Many hosts include a generator, outdoor awning, camping chairs, and a propane grill. TVs and Wi-Fi hotspots vary by listing, so check the amenities list. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm bedding, towels, and kitchen essentials are included, most Nittany-area hosts pride themselves on stocking everything you need for a turn-key trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nittany,%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options are popular with Nittany RV rentals?
Hosts in the Nittany area offer add-ons that make a family RV trip in Nittany much easier. Popular extras include linen and bedding packs, camping chair and table bundles, bike racks, propane grills, generators, portable Wi-Fi hotspots, kayak racks, and pet-cleaning fees if you're bringing a dog. Pickup is usually at the host's location near State College, Bellefonte, or Centre Hall, but many offer delivery to nearby campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Daily mileage allowances commonly run 100 to 250 miles, with overage fees set by each host. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and linens together, hosts often discount the package and it saves you a full trip's worth of hassle on arrival day.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Nittany,%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Nittany, PA?
Payment is simple and secure when you rent an RV in Nittany. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and the security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment. The refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown on your booking, and it's released back to you after a clean drop-off. Avoid surprises by documenting the RV's condition with photos at pickup and return. Pro tip: keep a quick walk-around video on your phone, it makes the deposit release smooth and fast.
